The class 68 locomotive is a mixed-traffic diesel locomotive which is mostly used to haul freight around the UK for Direct Rail Services (DRS), however it is also used for passenger services operated by Chiltern Railways and Transpennine Express, hauling Mk3 and Mk5A coaches respectively. You know why the guage is so strange... there were a couple of different gauges in NI/ROI and when they wanted to standardise some wanted the uk guage some wanted another guage. The uk Government being the helpful cunts they are, decided to split the difference
Its about time they replaces GVS - they do need to expand the rail network. I grew up in Lisburn .
Loving the video! Spotted myself in the reflection in the windows a couple of times🙈. “Bloody Norah!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 3:48

You got off at Seaton just as I got on 😅
Looks like I just missed you too then, I'm sure I'll bump into you some day!
@MikeWillSee I think I was in Greggs when you were talking to Jen.
@Rail_Focus ah yeah that would make sense, I also went there whilst I was waiting for my train and getting some footage of the town centre. I think quite a few of us did judging from the other videos I've seen!
Next time you are in Seaton delaval you need to go for the ice cream. Best in the country.
The reasons Ashington has been built as a new bay platform, rather than using the old platforms, is because that way a train that is laying over at Ashington before returning to Newcastle won't be blocking the running lines for freight trains running to/from Lynemouth. And it has been built on the west side of the line because there was plenty of space there to build a car park and all the facilities, whereas on the east side there is no space for any of that. It makes very little difference walking to the town centre which side of the tracks you start from, and presumably the plans are to reopen the footpath that runs alongside the tracks at which point it becomes even less of an issue.
@@stevieinselby makes sense!
Great video It was nice to meet you at Seaton Delaval. I was the chap in the red hat 😁... not 🎅 .. he comes next week

Yay, the Michael perspective is here! Great to see you last Sunday :)
🔥🔥🔥
You spelled Delaval wrong on the map, idiot!
What’s it like to be a froot
It is not CENTRAL.
@Avril-p7e it's the most central out of Belfast's stations, but definitely not as central as it could be...
I can't wait for 22.2.2222 22:22:22
It’s a Tube line because it’s a train that goes through a Tube 8:39
@@doom2469 by that logic so is the Eurostar
A joke of a transport hub that is not a transport hub for much of Belfast. The buses from North Belfast don't stop at the station and there are no train stations along the 5 miles of North Belfast rail lines.
Im from Dungannon, I thought we would get more train lines or something throughout NI given they’ve built a massive new station, but no sadly, it’s just a massive station with no new routes anywhere else in NI, bit shit
@@Deranged316 Its shameful the money they wasted on rebuilding what already existed while doing nothing to improve the service many of us don't even get.
Class 465 & 466 Are Sadly Soon Being Withdrawn 😭

Good Luck With The Class 387/1 At Southern
What a waste of money, bloody bus service in Belfast is rubbish their either late or pulll away just as people reach it ,ive watched as a woman with pram nearly at the bus and he pulled away just as she reached it ,now their pulling down the boyne bridge that dosnt interfere with the trains, don't live in sandy row but can sympathise with them .the first snow will stop the trains, rather use the car than train or bus
Cheese
Excited? As a local resident this hub is just causing more upset than needed! Translink need to consult and listen to locals. Businesses losing out on trade, residents tortured with noise from the ongoing work at all hours of the night and heritage being removed for no reason when it could have been worked around! ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL TRANSLINK
Yeah I've heard there's a lot of upset over the disruption caused through the station's construction and various road closures etc, but hopefully it'll lead to improvements in the long-term!
as a person who lives in Belfast and is going to see this place tomorrow, i am excited to see the complete overhaul that grand central has gone through, i remember seeing the old one all the time and the new one looks amazing! I will be going to take pictures and see the trains, excellent documentation video!
I will be visiting Belfast for the first time and so this is very beneficial, getting the 300 bus from Belfast International airport
@@GlobalMetalApocalypse well, enjoy your time here, we have plenty of stuff to see!
13:03 hopefully there will be more shops and seating
I think that's the plan but I'll need someone from Belfast to confirm it for me when it does open up because I don't get a chance to visit very often!
What an ugly building.
The first thing I noticed when you were in the Chiltern carriage was that awful squeaking the whole time - that used to drive me mad on the HSTs, and I was delighted to see the back of them and especially to _hear_ the back of them! Yes, it does seem a ridiculous waste to have built those new carriages and then have them scrapped at only a few years old, so hopefully they can be transferred to Chiltern to replace the ageing Mk3s. I don't know what the performance would be like of a class 68 with _two_ Mk5a rakes attached! Also, good like finding a line with 11-car platforms to accommodate it!
The station is so bland and forgettable and cheap looking. Awful.
brilliant insight, where are you from yourself?
I'm from the southeast so this was a little way from home for me - worth the trip though!
No sign of any sort of modern art or other artistic artwork at the new station , a lack of vision by the architects in my opinion . Very sterile
Is there a train to the airport and ferry?
Not at present but the station is designed to be futureproofed for when more lines are built in the future!
@@MikeWillSee what a pity.
@@annebowers7910 let's just hope that funding for the new lines is secured soon! In the meantime I'm pretty sure there are bus links from the places you mentioned to the Grand Central Station which is the good thing about it being an integrated hub!
Lots of concrete, steel and glass. Nothing to soften the interior or exterior like plants and trees. Small retail 'pods' for local producers would've been imaginative. Changing weekly or monthly, to give more exposure and test the market. I believe a real opportunity was missed here. To produce a public space that might encourage similarly innovative spaces across the city. I'm guessing that the lack of more seating before the platform barriers is to allow room for queuing. Especially for the Enterprise. However, more seating would've been thoughtful. For those with mobility issues and the elderly.
I wonder why there are 8 platforms? Great Victoria street ran fine with just 4... maybe it's future proofing for a new train line?
The idea is that _all_ trains into Belfast will now run into Grand Central station, when previously services were split between Great Victoria Street and Lanyon Place. The increased number of platforms enables this to happen and also futureproofs the network for new/upgraded lines as you suggested!
Very nice train station, absoluely what a city like Belfast deserves. But - we have 2024 and they really have separate vending machines of rail and bus? Are they joking?
What a waste of money , it's a big oul barrick no style
As someone from Belfast, I can tell you that this is all a front by Translink this new station is already causing many problems.
What sort of problems?
@@devanman7920 traffic specifically, because of the ongoing roadworks around the station, it's created my traffic chokeholds which has brought the city centre to a stand still.
@@ajorngjdonaydbr ya but that's obviously gonna stop when it's built, I thought there was many issues going on from your comment not just it's disruptive to traffic while being built, every place is like that
@@devanman7920it’s just a bug station with no new lines to anywhere actually in Northern Ireland, there’s more frequent trains to Dublin, but actually in Northern Ireland there is no benefits :/
@@Deranged316 is translink even looking at new NI routes? I know ROI was looking at some
Surprised there is no Solar on this huge roof.
Now that you mention it, that is rather strange! Had a quick google and it seems there's provision for them to be added in the future, but why they're not there from day one seems to be a mystery!
Beautiful station, though it's quite unusual that such a big and modern station comes without electrified tracks
Underinvestment for decades because of the terrorist campaign. Not much point investing millions in infrastructure, if the terrorists will blow it up. As they did. Time and again.
Nice overview, now we just need the railways to justify it 😊
Hopefully this new station will help to facilitate a more frequent (and hopefully, eventually, electrified) hourly Enterprise service - and maybe even railway reopenings in the north of Ireland. Armagh? Enniskillen? Derry via Omagh? Here's hoping 🤞
Theoretically the hourly enterprise service is meant to be starting from the 29th. Any further openings will be subject to funding but here's to hoping!
Will never see the first train rolling into the West 🙈
Missed opportunity for a large Train shed which could have been a real show stopper
