Unboxing the Oberheim TEO-5 with My Son | Honoring Generations of Music
Today is a deeply meaningful day for me. It would have been my father’s 86th birthday, and though he’s no longer with us, I’m celebrating his legacy in the best way I know-through art, creativity and music. To honor him, I’m sharing a multigenerational musical moment with my son, Elias, as we unbox and explore the Oberheim TEO-5, a synthesizer that blends classic analog warmth with modern creativity.
This video is more than just an unboxing-it’s about passing down the love of music to the next generation. My dad was my first inspiration in music, and now, as I sit with Elias, I hope to continue that tradition. Music connects us through time, and today, we’re making new memories while honoring old ones.
About the Oberheim TEO-5:
The Oberheim TEO-5 is a five-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer that captures the essence of Oberheim’s legendary sound. Designed to be both powerful and accessible, this synth features:
🎛️ Authentic Analog Sound - With genuine analog VCOs and the classic SEM state-variable filter, the TEO-5 delivers lush, vintage Oberheim tones.
🎚️ Modern Modulation Capabilities - Including through-zero FM, a robust modulation matrix, and built-in studio-grade effects, offering deep sound design potential.
🎵 Hands-On Playability - An intuitive layout makes this synth perfect for live performance, sound sculpting, or simply having fun creating music.
This synth is a perfect mix of past and present, keeping the Oberheim legacy alive while embracing modern workflows.
A Family Tradition of Music:
Art and creativity have always been an integral part of my family, shaping who I am as an artist and creator. This unboxing isn’t just about gear-it’s about connection. I love sharing music with my son, exposing him to the magic of synthesizers, and seeing the spark of curiosity in his eyes as he turns the knobs and plays with the sounds.
My channel isn’t just about synths-it’s about inspiring the next generation of musicians. Whether you’re new to synths or have been making music for years, I hope this video encourages you to keep creating, keep experimenting, and maybe even share the love of music with the younger generation in your life.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Drop a comment below-what does music mean to you? Have you had a special moment like this with a family member? Let’s keep the conversation going.

    We’re sorry to hear that you encountered latency issues with the MD850 Synthesizer. Unfortunately, we were not contacted directly and only recently came across your feedback via TH-cam. The MD850 is designed and verified to operate with a latency of <9ms from DIN MIDI input to audio output in all normal usage scenarios. We’d be happy to get information about your specific setup and measurements to better understand the situation by using our contact channels. Your insights are valuable to us!

      Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, it seems I received a buggy unit, which completely ruined my experience with the MD850. I spent two full days going through it with the manual in hand, trying to troubleshoot the issues, but in the end, it just wasn’t for me. The frustration of dealing with unplayable presets and unexpected behavior made it difficult to delve deeper or enjoy the synth as intended. I hope you’re able to review and address these concerns for future users. Thanks again for your time.

    We’re sorry to hear that you experienced issues with the MD850 Synthesizer. Unfortunately, we were not contacted directly and only recently came across your feedback via TH-cam. The MD850 is thoroughly tested before shipping, and presets not being playable is not expected behavior. While we have not observed this issue in our testing, we will review this further to ensure consistent performance. The only reason I can think of to buy a VST inside a box would be to insert it into a DAW-less setup for live performance. That would be especially true if there were a box that could handle many VST's and that lets me import my own VST's. Sorry to say, the Mayer MD850 is a total failure. Thanks for reviewing it.

    The latency directly on the unit is definitely not 70ms. I would have noticed that as I find almost everything above 10-12ms annoying to play. My suggestion: Connect a headphone straight to the unit and play it without a DAW / audio-interface in between. I guess, you'll be surprised. Also, you've mentioned you have set your DAW buffer to 512. Depending on the interface that has the potential to end up in a relatively high latency (round trip). You have to imagine that a) the MIDI info needs to get in your computer, b) has to be processed and send to your external device, and c) be recorded / monitored again. That all can sum up to a relatively high latency, which is not essentially the unit's fault. Try it directly - without a computer in between - with latency compensation and / or less buffer size (64 or 128). Direct monitoring can also be a good way to check, if it's within the DAW or really the fault of the connected unit. When syncing external drum machines with ableton, a manual latency compensation of 70-100ms (unfortunately) is nothing unusual. Regarding presets not making any sound: It appears that you might have the arp activated and / or external clock activated without a clock signal incoming. I can play every preset here but can understand that this plethora of options might be overwhelming in just one day. Regarding preset volumes: It seems that you are complaining about pads not being at 100 % volume when triggering these only shortly. Many pads in the library tend to develop over time and also increase in volume. Plus, pads are usually being programmed with max -12db on single voices to leave some headroom for chords. That's common practice in sound design. When playing single notes, these are not as loud as, e.g. a bass sound.

      Thanks for your comment! I just want to clarify a few things. While lower direct headphone latency is fine, I still plan to use this with my DAW, so that kind of defeats the purpose-especially at this price point. My buffer is already at 512, which is the lowest I can go while still being able to build out the song properly. Dropping it further isn’t an option since I need real-time usability with multiple elements running. 512 is already quite low, considering most of my other gear can function at 2048 while staying within 10ms latency. If external drum machines require manual link compensation as high as 70-100, that would throw all my synths out of sync when setting delay compensation in Ableton. Regarding the presets not making sound, it's not about holding down a pad long enough. In my latest video, I demonstrate that about 15% of the patches simply don’t work. Feel free to check it out for more details. Thanks again for engaging! th-cam.com/video/RAFZ6XWbKtU/w-d-xo.html

    I know you already bought the Mayer Vibes but you are returning that so given the type of music you make what about the Avalon Bassline from Abstrakt Instruments or the Roland Aira TB-3. Both have excellent sounds for techno. The Sequential Pro 3 is about $2,500 and killer for bass and leads with 3 oscillators of sound design goodness, analog filters and a nice mod matrix. The Vermona Perfourmer Mk II has to my ears a very distinctive sound that’s different from a lot of the other synths that are out there. I could only describe it as a gritty softness, rough and soft at the same time. It’s very special. And then there are the UDOs that you mentioned. The 6 with the Polyphonic keyboard upgrade and the ribbon is pretty exciting and those two upgrades for sure breathe new life into it. I know that the Access Virus TI2 is ancient but it’s still an amazing and deep synthesizer that is custom made for techno. If you don’t have or haven’t played with one, you really might find it to be insanely inspiring. But for me, having worked with all of the above and sharing your passion for electronic music, I’d say check out the Analogue Solutions Ample and Fusebox X. Both offer massive sound. Both have 3 oscillators. Ample has a very cool pattern generator that can give you lots of inspiration for melodic techno and similar. It’s also semi-modular so if you are patching friendly it can be pretty cool. Fusebox has a pattern generator too and wonderful analog filters with a British feel. It’s a tough call between these two for me as I love them both dearly, but I think Fusebox is probably more suited for your use case and will give you insanely deep bass and also excellent EDM leads. You asked about the Teenage Engineering OP-xy. I have to say that it’s one of the most musically inspiring synthesizers I have owned in a long time. I don’t think I would recommend it for what you say you are looking for, but at some point if you get your hands on one, I don’t Hinko you can help but be inspired by it. Maybe for your next $2,300 synth investment.

    Hi, a question, because I am also interested in this synth (as a cheaper version of the MD900): Is this latency occurring while the synth is directly controlled from a MIDI keyboard, or via USB MIDI from the laptop, and is Audio from the synth via audio jack fed into the laptop, or via USB (if the device supports that) ? 70+ ms is indeed a bad number, but if it is only a USB-Midi/Audio latency, it won't bother (me) much, since I have a 100% hardware/old style MIDI setup.

      @Knightsnare Thanks ! So the latency is obviously a deficiency of the device/software. I agree that this isn't acceptable for a device with that price tag. But, I've read that Mayer is a very responsible manufacturer who does really care about user feedback. If you contact him with the problem, I think he will try to fix it.

    I still buy hardware synths of old, because there is no latency and no glitch when changing programs. Yes, I write about old digital synths. From the 9ties. For VST's I use the PC. Another VST in a dedicated outboard box? Nah, only when I really like that instrument. Like, I will never get an OPSIX in hardware. The software version is boring as it gets anyway, the hardware has less possibilities.

    I know what you mean about something premium needing to feel good. I just took the plunge with an Erica Synths Steampipe. It's also a VST in hardware form, but every pot feels super high quality and makes performing with the instrument a pleasure. I know I could have very similar sounds with a laptop and Reaktor but while I'm performing, (I'm a pro sax and EWI player), I need muscle memory and quality controls so that any changes I want to make are instinctive, not a chore. As I mentioned in your other Video, could it be a possibility to contact customer support at Mayer first, before putting out a rant video on TH-cam? Basically, we can discuss the wobbling of the encoders. However, the play does not say much about the quality of encoders, in return they react very precisely and you can operate them with a slight touch of one finger. In my opinion, the overall quality of the hardware is very good and the statement that such a housing costs almost nothing is simply fundamentally wrong. The housing is one of the most expensive parts to manufacture for devices with low production volumes! Regarding the patches that do not output any sound, it could really be the case that these were not transferred correctly. However, the web interface allows this to be corrected within a very short time. Just contact the support quickly and they will help you very friendly!

    • @Knightsnare
      @Knightsnare 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      From the thumbnail, you can already sense the vibe of this video. It's all about the frustrations of dealing with a high-end device that doesn't just work right out of the box. This machine costs a hefty sum, yet here I am, having to transfer presets manually because they were not properly loaded by the manufacturer? For a device priced at nearly €2400, that's unacceptable. Additionally, if you dive into the manufacturing side, especially the costs of materials and fabrication, you'll find that for production runs over fifty units, the case should cost between €50 to €100. Why are consumers paying top dollar for inefficiencies that should be ironed out at this price point? Let’s discuss! Btw, I used ChatGPT's reasoning model to arrive at that cost estimate.

    • @synthmill
      @synthmill 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Knightsnare It is your right not to be happy about it. But I still don't understand why you send a device back straight away and would rather spend your time making a ranting video than getting in touch with the manufacturer quickly and easily. I like to give someone the opportunity to correct a possible fault before I leave bad reviews on the Internet. It's like going to a restaurant, not liking something and not mentioning it only to be able to leave a bad review on google. And something else: I can call myself a very experienced user and tester of synthesizers, but the Vibes has many setting options and therefore also a lot of things that can be set incorrectly. I haven't been able to test it yet because I'm at work and not at home, but were the patches that didn't produce a sound possibly saved with an arp/seq and the clock set to external? And another question: Was the synth really direct from the manufacturer, or could it be that someone else had unpacked it before? You can easily overwrite the default sound. Did you go to the mixer page and check whether the oscillator was turned up at all? Have you looked at the mod page? Were the envelopes set to default? So many questions that can't be answered with a short video...

      Hey, I checked out your channel and really like your music! I also see that you own this machine, and I just want to say I didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers with my video-that’s actually why I added an apology at the end. Maybe I just need to take more time with it, and I genuinely appreciate the perspectives of people who enjoy it. I spent two full days going over the synth, manual in hand, really trying to get into it, but I just kept running into issues. I didn’t even include everything I struggled with in the video, but there was more. I was eager and excited about it, but the amount that wasn’t working for me ended up putting me off. That said, I’m always open to learning, and I appreciate hearing from others who’ve had a different experience!

      I just want to say how nice it is to see a productive discussion like this. Great points by both and mutual respect. Kudos to both of you for your thoughts and positions. I do think it is difficult to judge a new synth on only 1 day (or maybe it was 2) of owning it and diving in. I have to say as an owner of both the 900 and the Vibes I found these difficult to get into, not intuitive and I would have re-boxed (nice term btw) both if I only spent one or two sessions with them. I like and respect the people and company behind these, and given that you want to support small companies, I agree with @synthmill that a more productive and helpful video for your audience would be to have a dialog with the manufacturer, give them a chance to improve their product or address and help you overcome the issues that you encountered. That helps everyone. Take a look at how @looppop reviews new gear, talks with the manufacturers, they address and fix things or do not, and then he reports about that in the video. Love what you are doing with your channel and hope you continue.

      @RolandFrasierEPIC Thank you so much for the constructive criticism-I really appreciate it. I did spend a total of two days with the machine across multiple sessions, but I think my frustration got the better of me, which is why I didn’t reach out to the manufacturer. You bring up a great point, and as someone new to this, I realize I don’t always think things through completely. I never intended to be unfair to small manufacturers, but at this price point, it just felt frustrating to have to work so hard to get it functioning properly. It was a mixed bag of experiences, but I truly appreciate your insights and the discussion!

    How do you integrate external midi while the midi note-off bug exists? Midi on the MPCs is fully broken, it kills notes, all by itself, essentially useless. Let's not even get into the MTC bugs, the midi editing bugs in V3, etc., etc. Akai have concentrated in selling us plugins rather than fixing a broken OS.

    Hey @knightsnare, you asked about the envelope follower? I’m still working it out on the solar too but in euro rack it’s a way to link the voltage envelope of something (say pitch of an osc or filter cutoff) to an external source, if I recall the solar has the envelope linked to the contact mic preamp I think (or maybe ext audio), so in theory you can tap the mic and have the. Envelope open up an oscillator or a gate or trigger or change pitch or filter cut off. That’s what I THINK it does but i need to play.

    • @matsfrommusic
      @matsfrommusic 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Knightsnare No not really. IMO it comes down to the sound character more than anything else, or that depends on what you have already I guess but generally I think that's a big one and why I say Super 6, the only synth that has got me really excited probably more than any other in the last 40 years :) I'm not a synth wizard or anything just so you know. Also what a great variety of sounds several smaller synths would get you for the money of a Super 6. Volca keys for instance sounds amazing albeit being a little noisy.

    Thanks for this! Having some familiarity with subtractive/modular synthesis I was able to figure out the basics, but there's a lot of crazy extra features, and the user guide falls way short. It's worth noting that it effectively has two sequencers- the tunable 5-step you showed here, plus a more standard 16-step accessible through the keyboard menu (worthy of its own tutorial). The two sequencers can be clocked separately and patched together for some very interesting poly-rhythmic effects.

    • @Longstride
      @Longstride 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@edgeof60 100% agree the manual is very light even if you DID know lots about Eurorack before reading it, they should look at the hydra synth manual for inspiration. That’s excellent. I consider myself a reasonably smart person 😆 but I’m sitting here wondering how to make use of the keyboard sequencer too. Go on, make a video in it! I’d watch! 😉👍🏻

    • @edgeof60
      @edgeof60 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Longstride If only I was a more competent videographer and a less lazy person! Until I get around to it, I can give you a quick breakdown: Under the keyboard menu, select "mode: sequencer". When you turn the encoder clockwise, the next menu options are specific to the sequencer- "run: free" if you want it to sequence continually, length, clock division, direction, and then step-tuning. This is the tricky part, select each of the first eight steps and turn the encoder to tune each one. push to activate and turn to go to the next step, turn again after step 8 to go to steps 9-16. Long-push to exit when you're done.Tempo is set by the keyboard BPM setting, while the 5-step sequencer is clocked by the pulser knob (but each can be clocked by an external source, or they can be synced together). The keyboard sequencer is not very intuitive, the arpeggiator is more straightforward. But either way, patch it with the 5-step sequencer for some interesting results. One thing I love about this synth is that every voice can be clocked, tuned, and modulated independently.

    • @Longstride
      @Longstride 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@edgeof60 thanks for that! I got to the visual tuners once but I like to know the note I’m tuning as well as by ear so I’ll try again with guitar tuner and pair them up! Watch this space!

    Because it is so unique, I hope you won't regret it. It has no MIDI but you can still sequence it with a Black Sequencer for example, or a KeyStep Pro, or anything that has CV OUTs. But you obviously know that already. I will keep mine for its manual tuning imprecisions and happy accidents it creates when you perform with it and how it fuels my creativity. But I really get why you are at this crossroad. And it's crucial that you don't lie to yourself. My humble opinion is: if when you touch it, it doesn't inspire you anymore, then you may need something else, whatever the genre you're in. 🙏

    • @JessFromSquareOne
      @JessFromSquareOne 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Knightsnare I didn't propose anything in my first comment because I find it such a personal choice :) I mean by that, there are so many factors when it comes to pick a new gear, and they are not the same from one person to another. Poly/Mono, Analog/Digital, Keys/Desktop, Knobs/MenuDiving etc. etc. That being said, you mentioned Super UDO 6 and Iridium, that means you are already lurking on them and want them ;) I find these two very exciting. If you go the UDO 6 way, you must think about the real estate it takes. I'd rather have an Iridium, but like you said, I'd prefer to wait for a new release. Have you looked in to an Hydrasynth? Good luck! Curious to see what you'll pick :)

    Get rid of the Solar and the Behringer Odd, and get a used Sequential Pro-3, hold on to the difference for something great later in the year. The keys feel great and it can do a lot of modulation possibilities and the sequencer is cool too for patches.

    I love your Solar 42 content, and I'd hate to see you get rid of it. I'd pay to have a Solar 42 course that walked me through getting very familiar with it. There are no Solar 42 in-depth tutorials out there, so maybe a video course someone could buy would offset the investment you made in the Solar 42 and make it more appealing to keep?

    Check out the Redshift six, or Erica synths steam pipe? Those two are on my radar. N I would like to know if these are something that will fit in with your set up? Side note, to cure gas look at some outboard gear, maybe an effects pedal or new synth won’t do it for you and a semi expensive hardware unit (without a screen) is something that might aid your sound? Just my opinion but I find looking at hardware sonic devices gets me thinking in a different kinda corner. I don’t have a Solar yet, I hope to get one soon but after that I don’t see myself going bigger.. Looks like your maybe be reaching a ceiling but I’m looking forward to where you end up going

      I know exactly what you mean, the only thing that i can think of is cv/midi sequencing. Sure there’s some boxes out there that can aid the Solar in the sequencing department. What about that motorised synth? It’s 3000 so maybe not but if not that Korg, and if not that wait and see hold down on the gas, like don’t get something just because you want it, make it fit in and make sense to your set up. Set up looks good. Happy hunting 😁
