Oh dear! 😱 I really could have needed a Sound Engineer! And someone to record and edit the video properly; an expert... Well, here's my guitar cover version of "Looking For The Summer" by Chris Rea. Recording for the very first time with video. I think, it's a bit more interesting than just watching photos... And I'm using my first and new lap steel here instead of a guitar bottleneck. You're very welcome @alexx1940! 🙂 Well, at 02:19 I show and play it very slowly. To be honest, I'm not able to pin point it down. It's about feeling. I listen to the original and try to recreate what I'm hearing. That's all I can tell you...Sorry.

      @@stefankallen6142 Your turorial is great! However, I'm a rookie with the guitar and cannot nail down this pattern exactly like you play it. I think I need more practice and need to train my hearing:) By the way, here Chris Rea plays his guitar part a little differently, though this live version is also very beautiful: th-cam.com/video/WqPB74rkK-I/w-d-xo.html

    • @stefankallen6142
      @stefankallen6142 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @alexx1940 🙂! Ah, ok. Now I get it. If you're a "rookie", you're probably pretty much relying on tabs and wanting to play exactly like your heroes do...note for note. That's perfectly reasonable and a good starting point on guitar. But it can also get you stuck. (!!!) I've been playing for roundabout 24 years now. And I've been on the same track... until I realised, that I'm not Chris Rea, David Gilmour or Mark Knopfler 😅... and never will be. My hands are different (small, I can't do thumb overs for example), my strengths and weaknesses and so on. Try to free yourself from these chains. Play the way you want and are able to. And most important: have fun doing it! You can also see it in the link you've sent me (live version of Looking for the summer) : Even the original artists themselves don't play it the same. They improvise. Change things up... There are many live versions of this song. And Chris Rea always plays something different. And so does the rhythm guitar player (Robert Ahwai). Well, hopefully I could help you a litte bit and shine a light on some things... keep on playing and practising. 🙂👍 Oh, yeah, and find a good teacher in your area!! Especially, when you're just starting out on the guitar! Bye

      @stefankallen6142 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi paulvitti666! Thank you very much! 🙂 Well, it could sound a lot better, if only I knew how to record properly... Guitar: Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster (2013). This model came with Fender Noiseless N3 Strat Single Coils and a S-1 Switch. Here's a link to the s-1 switching system: www.strat-talk.com/threads/pickups-in-typical-s-1-setup.365162/ It's been quite some time since I recorded this so I can't tell you for sure how I got that sound/ what pickup configuration I used. The guitar runs into the Line 6 POD HD500X. I think I used a Vox AC 30 amp model. (See info box below the video) Effects: Compression, a litte bit of overdrive and reverb; maybe a litte bit of mid boost and a volume pedal for the swells. Important: I played this with my fingers/fingernails! That's a huge tone difference. Kind regards!

      Hi Gino! Thank you! Well, are you referring to this tutorial, or the whole cover? Because, I didn't care too much for the sound on the tutorials. Since it's more about "how to play"... Basic: My Strat has a special "switch". The neck and middle pickup together in series - soundwise close to a humbucker at the neck... Then straight to the Line 6 POD HD500X. A lot of compression + Vox AC-30 amp modeling.

      Oh, I missed to point out that I'm using my fingers to pick on this one. That's also an important part of the sound. I have hardly ever seen Chris Rea using a pick, either... (like Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits for example) Well, soundwise, I also tried to get the right tone; but in my opinion, you are only going to achieve 90%. At best. Even if you had the exact same effects/his guitar, you wouldn't sound like him, unless you actually are Chris Rea... The guitar sound is like a fingerprint. In general: Another very important thing: Don't forget, every CD/Album has been mixed/mastered by a sound engineer. I've seen some videos on TH-cam; these guys are wizards! 😂 They can fix anything: guitar out of tune, wrong timing, wrong pitch, offbeat etc... and make it sound like a million bucks...

      Thank you very very much, Jeffrey Soble! I'm happy that you like it! 😊 Well, the tone is "ok"...; as close as I could get. So: It's a cheap lap steel but I've switched the original singlecoil to a humbucker (wired "in series", so the normal way). The tuning is Open G (D-G-D-G-B-E). But, since I'm only using the D-G-B and E string, you can keep the standard tuning... The signal goes into my Line 6 POD HD500X. There, the signal chain is pretty simple: Noise Gate -> Volume Pedal -> Compressor based on the MXR Dyna Comp -> Distortion based on the Chandler Tube Driver -> Reverb (Hall) into an Amp based on the 1973 Hiwatt DR-103. Yes, I learned the song by ear. I've written it down somewhere in my flat...haha. Hope that helps!

      Hi Gerardo! 🙂 Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, there aren't any official tabs for Chris Rea Songs...😢 So, I had to figure it out by myself. The chords for the rhythm guitar are(Intro and verse): Bm, G, Em, A, Bm. Then, "This ain't no game of kiss and tell": D, A, Bm, G, Em, A, Bm. So there are just 5 chords overall. The lead guitar is more difficult. I wrote it down somewhere. But I don't know how to send or upload it...

      @@stefankallen6142 of course no one can sing like Chris, his voice is so unique . I did not say that you sing, but to play guitar for couplets where Chris sings. play them with the guitar. i'll subscribe for sure . keep playing .

      Yes, I hear what you're saying. Well, a little misunderstanding here. When I wrote "his voice is so unique", I meant, I don't know if it's any good to play the voice with the guitar... There might be too many guitar tracks then. It's the lead guitar that adds most to the feeling of the song in my opinion. If I add the vocals, you won't hear the lead as good as now. So, I'll have to think about it. (Sorry for my English; I'm from Germany) 😉
