A consistent application of the thesis of Keller's lecture is completely untenable. That's why it is prohibited in Deut 24:16 and Ezekiel 18. It's one thing to confess sin. It is entirely another to repent of sin. ("Confess" = agree with; "repent" = stop doing and turn away from.) Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah did not *repent* of the sins of their fathers. They *confessed* them. Go read the relevant passages if you think otherwise. Seriously. Keller conflates these issues, and thus missed the ball on that one. Additionally, no saint, prophet or apostle ever claimed that an entire people group was morally culpable for random sins done by a *portion* of their forefathers. The confessions of Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah were 1) covenantal (not corporate) issues specifically relating to idolatry, and 2) predicted by God. See Lev 26. To assume that other sins such as slavery, oppression, cruelty, etc, warrant the same treatment is speculative ...and nowhere found in Scripture. Also, Keller seems to forget that 1/2 the USA was against slavery and, unlike any other country in human history, fought a war to end it. Would Keller be willing to be morally consistent and take his message of corporate evil to Nigeria (the country of my birth) or Ghana and rebuke them all because some of their forefathers sold their fellow man to European slave traders? He should. And he would have more moral ammo, since most African countries didn't (formally) end slavery until WW I. I say "formally" because that's on paper: there are 2x as many slaves in Africa *today* than ever were in the history of the USA. Speaking of Africa, I've personally preached on and discussed Achan in Africa to audiences from multiple African countries. Without exception, they were all appalled at the idea of Acham's family (and livestock) suffering for Achan's sin. Keller claims non-white non-western people think this is normal. Whatever non-white non-western people Keller is referring to, I've yet to find them. And I'd bet money he's never come across them either. It would be sad indeed if Keller totally made up his claim. ...and I have a sneaking suspicion he did. 'Course, if he could name a few of those "many/most" peoples he's referring to, I'll be the first to withdraw my claim and issue an apology.
