How to Train Your Dog to Go Potty on Command
Looking for how to train your dog to go potty on command by using gentle, positive reinforcement methods? You're at the right place! Our dog trainer shares her favorite method for getting dogs to pee and poop outside on command, or better, let's say "on cue," since we'll be persuading our dogs rather than forcing them!
Some Additional tips:
-Start training your dog to go to the bathroom on cue from an early age so as to inculcate good habits
-Take advantage of when you are sure your dog needs to potty, such as when your puppy or dog waked up from overnight sleep.
-Avoid repeating the cue over and over. You want to say it right when your dog is getting ready to potty and you're pretty sure he will follow through.
-As your dog starts associating the cue word with going potty, you can start saying it earlier and earlier. For example, at first you'll be saying it right when your dogs squats, then you can say it right as he is about to squat, then as he's sniffing, then you can start saying as he's walking to his potty spot, and then you can start saying it, the moment he's let out in the yard. Familiarizing with your dog's pre-potty habits can help you in the process.
-Say Good Boy right when he you witness the last piece of poop falling to the ground or last trickle of pee and your dog's is about to move on from squatting to moving on.
*We offer support! If you have any questions on the process, our trainer will be happy to provide answers, just post in the comment section. Happy training!

Extinction Bursts in Dogs - And How They Impact Your Training
My dog is not even 4 and is having these problems.
So sorry to hear that your dog is so young and already having these problems. My heart goes out to you, pinched nerves in dogs are very painful and the poor dogs have no idea what is going on.
@DogDiscoveries I know, the vet looked at me like I did not know what I was taking about. He is on meds I am hoping he gets better. I think he did injure himself chasing a cat.
2 years later. This is the first comment, and really learnt a lot. I don't know if you will see this comment but if you do the all I got to say is, good job
❤
💯
Thank you for all that you said here 😌❤ I have been too afraid to be seen and be judged. It feels like it’s the time.
Sorry, this wasn't helpful. First of all, you're doing it with cooperative dogs and secondly, larger dogs. Some male dogs are small and low to the ground and move and stop peeing as soon as you approach them with anything. I've tried everything with my dog and tried about 20 times to get his pee and he will not let a sample be collected. End up having to have a cystocentesis under sedation. ☹️
This video is on how to collect a urine sample. For dogs that are not cooperative, you would need to go deeper on the issue and possibly use a desensitization and counterconditioning process. It is a more involved process, but it would be worth it in the long run for challenging cases.
this is helpful
My German Shepard only seems to be nippy when he has eaten something that hasn't helped him. Then he over eats poops for a day or two alot then is back to normal. So I see his behaviour as a sign he is not feeling well. We also use the term "only licks and kisses" and he changes his behaviour.
This video didn't discuss spicy - my one dog is able to eat some spicy peppers and the other won't. Jalapeno peppers slices they both will lick and have reaction to but won't actually chew or swallow.
Thank you. My dogs keep getting injured when playing fetch.
Here is really windy and raining, my dog looks scared of the wind and rain.. he tries to run back to the house. There is not much what I can do since is gonna be this weather like this for the next 6 to 7 months.
Try desensitization and counterconditioning. Basically, start with short and fun outings and if he is social invite over a dog who doesn't mind the wind and rain who will play outside and show him it's all good and fun.
Witnessed it for the first time and my dog’s hair stood nearly all the way to the base of his tail! Looked like bed head
I saw you clean the ear well with rubbing alcohol ,take an 18 gauge needle poker on the underside of the ear close to the tip drain it out. Than clean it up take a plastic tube ( dry eraser tube) take that tube place it on the underside of the ear and tape it tight to prevent it filling back up. Clean the ear daily bout 2xs a day. Prevent excessive head shaking too if possBile.I am doing a myself and will comment again on results
One person I talked to recently was able to fly his Pitbull to Italy using ITA Airways. So happy he found this airline as he was desperate.
I had my ‘pitbull’s dna checked and turned out she doesn’t fall under the definition of a pitbull.
That will make everything easier, I think many dogs referred to as "pitbulls" will have some interesting breeds in their DNAs. My friend's "pitbull" turned out being a lab/chow mix
@@DogDiscoveries Chow is put on the brachy list too though, but with the lab the dog may pass.
@@renerowland Yes, in this case it would help if a vet willing to collaborate may put Lab/mix in the health certificate for flying.
My friend Jose he has 2 Pomeranians
My dog completely spazzes
You can leave it alone,....but....make sure you take care of any ear infection the dog has or it will just keep happening if that is what caused the dog to sling its head in the 1st place..
On the experiment of sleeping or laying where your feet aren’t facing the door, it does happen when they would still prefer to face the door as a protective instinct. My dog used to still sleep next to my face or on top of my head even when I would sleep or just lay on the other side of the bed. Closer to the door.
My dogs hackles go up when in the garden that could be from playing to being territorial she's only a small dog too she's a french bulldog cross blue heeler
Awww she must be a cutie! My Rottweiler's hackles used to go up when playing or when he got startled by somebody walking by the fence.
@@DogDiscoveries aww bless 🥰 they do the funniest things sometimes don't they at first I didn't know why Luna did it as other dogs I've had have never really done it so I found this video
AWW I have a Pomeranian dog his name is slushy
Very interesting!
You didn’t give 4 reasons
4 reasons dogs lick their front legs and paws
Please use real people to say these things. This narration is horrific.
We had real people and back then we got many complaints about them being too slow or too fast or the audio wasn't great. We have really tried hard to make everybody happy.
I know this video is a year ago, maybe someone experienced this. One night our dog's hair, about an inch wide only on one ear, raised on it's own while she's asleep. Its raising was very distinct as it was very high even against the wind. Like somebody picked it up. I pushed it down then back up again on its own. Is it possible a partial hair by the ear to be raised without wind for a hackle?
Can it indicate seizure?
My Shepherd-Klee Kai mix has a fairly noticeable occiput, but not all that prominent.
my dog wasnt even inside, its the smell, not smoke or anything like that.
Love lovebeagles
Our lovely cockapoo died 2 days ago..the love he showed us was many times more than humans..chronic pancreatitis, heart murmur, arthritis and multiple operations when he was a young pup to right floating patella’s,you would think he would just give in but he had a strong heart then…to say he will be missed is an understatement..he was a very loved dog and we will miss him…Vinny will never be forgotten, his lovely soul will always be welcome in our house….
So sorry for you loss. He sounded like a great warrior with a big heart. You were fortunate to have had each other in your lives.
Floof vs *B I G* *F L O O F !* Both are SNOW ❄️ 🌨️ PUPPIES ❤🥶
It will go away on its own. Ask a real vet. It takes about a month for giant dogs like mine. One of my saint bernards had the surgery.,,it came back..same ear and my other saint developed one. Went to another vet.. a great 70 year old guy thag also teaches @ vet college. "Just leave it for about a month" poof... gone
Did it went away or stayed and developed again
@Rs-yd2bp please reply
Please research rawhide and find alternative treats ❤
Cute puppies
Thank you so much fir sharing this you giving better hope to help my lil boy 🤍 on you
Thank you for the video. '...one more day...' I have to make that decision tomorrow. and know that to postpone will only force him to suffer longer. My male dog is 13 and we have been partners in life since he was a pup; dogs are partners and not property to me. His bad days outnumber his good. He has dementia and other problems giving him pain in moving and so on. I will be holding him at the end. I have opted for cremation and return of his ashes. The vet staff were great yesterday to explain everything and will allow me to pre-pay so I can leave when done. On his bad days the other dog and cat treat him differently as if they sense or know. I did not know dogs can get dementia until I observed him a few months ago and thought that he acts like a hooman with dementia and a search confirms it; he has all the symptoms. Even at my age of 76 I believe in the Rainbow Bridge: Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge....
So sorry you are going through this. It's so sad to lose them. I hope all the great memories will help you at this difficult time.
Thank you! I have a 12 year old dog with aural hematoma. A rescue and foster program had him undergo two separate surgeries, including 28 teeth being removed. As I just adopted this sweet old dog, I do not want him to undergo anymore surgeries this year. It’s too risky, and May spiral him back into depression if he survives the anesthesia. So, I will ask the vet to help me monitor Callum with less invasive treatments. 🙏💕🐶
You make me not want a beagle lol
Depending on the surgery, and if the surgical site isn't bandaged and the surgeon says it's ok, I would use something called a surgery recovery suit, but if the stitches are exposed, I probably wouldn't put it on your pet.
Why are some soft and some hard are needle like. I pull the hard whiskers. They seem painful to my dog. The soft ones are cool.
My Belgian Malinois has a big one on his head
My dog kept standing when i move the treat to the back of the head, what do i do
You can keep trying calmly while sitting on the couch with her next to you. Or you can wait for her to sit naturally and praise reward when that happens, this method is known as "capturing."
I recently roasted a lamb roast that sent my friend's dog into a barking frenzy as soon as the smell of the roast hit the air! He was SO stressed by it that I had to crate him to calm him. I opened the windows and ran the oven fan without not much relieve. Regardless what I tried to calm him sadly, it just wasn't affective. Eventually, the roast was done and he LOVED the lamb meat!!!! Still, he returns to the oven and barks at times as he still smells the lamb. I think, because he is a breed of dog that was bred for hunting, his senses are hightend with gamey meat. That's my thought.
❤❤❤❤❤
My pretty girl, Sweet Pea, once caught the scent of a rabbit while we were on vacation and had me running after her barefoot through a forest in the dark. Got her back though ❤
Glad you were able to bring her back to safety. Sounds like she may enjoy barn hunts!
this video was the most wholesome thing ive ever watched, ive got a touch of the tism myself and this made me so happy! love youre obvious enthusiasm for dogs!!! XD dont listen to everyone bitching about you over explaining. i love it. its so wholesome. XD
No greater pain
So true, my neighbor once gave me the perfect description for how it feels to lose a dog. She told me it feels like somebody grabs your heart, tosses it to the ground and then shatters it into a million pieces. So sorry for your loss.
The most widely reason they are left untreated is because of the 1000's of dollars it cost for a simple procedure , example I went to a doctor for a sist on my knee.. he drained it right in the office , cost me $297.00 with crappy insurance... Took my dog to the vet for a simple ear Hematoma.. they took her in for surgery.. screwed up her ear for life..and charged me over $1200 dollars that was just for the surgery.. then had to get some kind of BS ointment that was this tiny tube for 80 friggn dollars and use it at home and also some antibiotics ..another 50 dollars SO bottom line cost me $1200 + $80 + $50 then they sent me home with a dog with a permanently screwed up deformed ear and the rest of the treatment I had to do myself... WHAT A FRIGGN SCAM VETS ARE... and if they F up.. they blame in on the dog.. I will NEVER make this mistake again...
Had the same experience but it was 4k. Then my big boy got one on his other ear. Called a 75 year old rural vet that spent 35 years teaching at vet College. "Leave it be" went away after a month
Going threw this rite now 😔😔
