I love watching Elmore Smith when he played for the Lakers I remember his strength was blocking shots I was in awe seeing him block all those shots I also remember remember Elmore couldn’t shoot free throws just like any other big man I always had my fingers crossed when he went to the free throw line 😂😂 I love Elmore Smith and always emulated him while playing against my neighborhood buddies blocking shots like he did back in the days

My father was one of his college coaches. He played with the great Bob Cousy, perhaps the best small guard of all time. But even after playing with Cousy and against other great players in the NBA, his eyes would light up when he talked about John Rinka. I remember a little bit of watching him play, but I was very young. When I was older and I would see a great shooting guard in a game or on tv I would ask my father, “does that guy shoot better than Rinka?” My father would laugh and shake his head and say, “no, Rinka would just take him out another five feet. No one has range like Rinka.” One time, he put on an old Kenyon game film and we watched him shoot. This was in the early 80’s before the three point line in college basketball and nobody shot outside of 17 feet. It was incredible to watch. That has probably changed in the last few years with Curry etc. but he was a great shooter way ahead of his time. If the three point line was around then who knows how many points he would have scored.

Travis Grant was an All Time Great in College Basketball. How the hell did the big schools miss getting him in their school. Western Kentucky wins it all in 1971 with him and their other great players. Jim rose , Big Mac, Clarence Glover and Jerome Perry. Wow

Elmore Smith is a great one. Player and person. His Kentucky St. team could have played D1 or in the College Division at that time. UCLA (D1 ) and Phila Textile ( College Division ) won the respective NCAA Championships in 1970. I've always wonder how Kentucky St. with Travis Grant and Elmore Smith would have done against those 2 Champs in College Basketball that year ?

1965 I am one of 2500 people packed into Rucker park in NYC for the, end of the summer, round robin tournament between summer league all star teams from Boston, Philly, Washington DC, and NYC. Leading the Philly team was Earl Monroe, and when entered the court everyone, in unison started a low chant of J-E-E-S-U-S , J-E-E-S-U-S and Earl did not disappoint dropping 43 points, using 360 degree spins from baseline to baseline. Philly needed every point because "Crazy" Joe Hamond, dropped 39. I think also on the NYC team was Herman "The Elevator Man" Knowles, and Jackie Jackson all Harlem playground legends. Games like that is what NYC BASKETBALL is all about.

Reverend Terrence Walker salutes the great Machine Gun Travis Grant. He was my highschool basketball coach at McNair Sr. Highschool in DeKalb County Georgia. He was a highly respected coach, mentor and Father figure to many of us players. He led our school to many state championship playoff games and tournaments. Thanks for teaching us how to play the game the right way Coach Grant. Congratulations on this high honor of being inducted into the college Hall of Fame. God bless you coach Grant and your wife and children, what an awesome family, I remember them well.

@@tylercamille, I've been going to the NAIA Division I National Basketball Tournament in Kansas City for years. The 1972 tournament was the first I ever attended, as we just moved to Kansas City about 10 months beforehand. I was just in grade school. My father mentioned an article in the Kansas City Star about your grandfather scoring 60 points in the first round against Minot State for a tournament record. He asked me if I wanted to go with him to watch some of the second round. I got to see your grandfather and his team beat West Georgia in the second round and one more game on their way to winning their third consecutive national championship. To me, he remains one of the most memorable players over the years in the tournament--a great player, shooter, rebounder, scorer, and teammate. He seems like a great man too. It's performances like his and his team's that keep me going back to that tournament year after year.
