Sling TSi Ballistic Parachute deployment considerations
มุมมอง 1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hi all! Sorry it's been so long. I was in training for a new airplane (A330) at my airline, so that was taking up all of my time and brainpower for a while. As promised, here is part 2 in the parachute topic. This one is dealing with the Aeronautical Decision Making associated with deploying the chute. Next video will return to more fun / scenic stuff. Should you put a parachute in your Sling TSi?
มุมมอง 4.4K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Sling TSi can be equipped with a whole-airplane ballistic parachute system, kinda like a Cirrus. But unlike a Cirrus, it's an option. So, Sling builder's have a decision to make. This video explores the pros and cons of putting a chute in your Sling. A recent trip to Kentucky highlights an important lesson for pilots: ATC is human, too. I find that many newer pilots feel like, since ATC is the FAA and the FAA is our regulator, that means ATC is the authority. But, just like pilots, controllers can and do make mistakes. Just like we hear about there being a pilot shortage, there's an ATC shortage, too. That means existing controllers are oft...

High Speed Approaches in a Sling TSi
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
If ATC asks you to keep your best forward speed as long as practical on approach, how fast can you go and a what point do you need to start slowing in order to get configured for a stabilized landing? Since I plan on flying my plane into some busy airports soon, this is the question I wanted to answer for the Sling TSi. I'm used to flying jets, in which the rule of thumb is that it takes 1 mile...

    Great video. We used to be members and property owners at Mountain Air and flew our MU2 into there. You can see a few videos of that on my channel. Video technology wasn't what it is now ;). The only other comment I would make is that at least when we were there 2NC0 wasn't in the database, so you needed to put it in as a user defined waypoint. Since the GPS didn't know it was an airport, you would get multiple terrain warnings as you descend so consider inhibiting terrain warnings prior to starting the approach, otherwise it can be distracting. And if you don't have a dedicated button to do that it takes some searching in the GPS menus since that isn't something most pilots do very often.

    • @OneAlphaMike
      @OneAlphaMike หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nice! The MU2 is a heck of an airplane. Must have been a blast to fly it in and out of Mountain Air. Fortunately, 2NC0 is in the databases now, so we don't have to deal with that anymore.

    The great mystery in any discussion about "the impossible turn", is what is the aircrafts climb-gradient, and what is its glide-ratio? Another thing missing: What is the best glide speed: IN A BANKED TURN? These are rudimentarily simple to calculate, but I have never met a single other pilot who could actually calculate the precise numbers or even knew how!

    I landed at Johnson Creek about a month ago in the afternoon. Thought I could get out of there in the evening, but the winds were all over the place and temps were pretty high. Decided to camp overnight (had my basic camping equipment with me). Glad I did -- it was scary enough getting out of there first thing in the morning.

  • @adriannye
    @adriannye หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great work! Your height above the end of the departure runway is a good indicator of your actual climb gradient, which eliminates guessing about headwind or density altitude effects. If this height is more than 500 I consider it safe to try a turn back. If not i don't. Whatever number you use, pre-brief it and commit to it before takeoff. In addition to startle factor there is pure indecision, which is probable more common and can be solved by pre-briefing your emergency procedures.

    Great job 1AM. I know it takes a lot of time to do this. Thank you! I have a Sling 2 with Magnum chute. I agree with your analysis. It would be nice to have a data base of Sling chute deployments like Cirrus has…but maybe lack of pulls is an indicator of Rotax reliability. I think Boris Popov (founder BRS) has said “pull at any altitude if you need it!” The TH-cam video titled “Rescue Parachute System in Sirius” shows a successful deployment at about 200’ or 250’ agl, I am guessing, from level flight. In the USAF, it was hammered into us to trust the ejection seat. Parachutes work great! “Pull early, pull often!” th-cam.com/video/MQjxpwzigN4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RRHfcRLCIwWUIjuO Or here’s test pilot in a spin 14 seconds before impact! 327 agl? th-cam.com/video/xwZrtYgnP7s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lQEostCnUKAZYbbF

    Nice one Mike. I've equipped a chute in my second aircraft. My 4 place mission didn't allow a chute in my TSi. So I'm planning to do some turn back practises and be picky with the airports to minimise the risks. Either way, the chute is a great option to have at any altitude.

      Even with the chute in my TSi, with some forward ballast, I can carry 2 adults + 2 kids + bags, or 4 adults but no bags. Someone once told me, "The problem is, those kids tend to keep growing, if you keep feeding them." 😆

      Not sure where you could find such a chart, or what value it would have. I don't know about a 912, but with a 915 or 916, you'll typically have a constant speed prop, so your RPM wouldn't get that low until very low power settings, such as descending in the pattern. With a constant speed prop, RPM is not a good correlate for HP. Better to use manifold pressure or fuel flow, or better yet the % power indication on your G3X or whatever display you have.

    For power off better follow a rule. The 777 No Power Turnback Rule. If expecting to climb at 700 fpm plus, have 7 knots or more wind, then mark the altimeter for 700 agl or more. I learned that on the Emergency LowManeuvering channel. The 700 No power Turback rule. Partial Power he taught from 400 agl if not surging engine. If surging, dont turnback, headwind turn if any.
