Totally valid criticism! I wish I had not made that trade offer and I think it stemmed from playing more ranked games recently (where I do see it happen on occasion vs never in tournaments). I didn’t lie about it being a trade for the win when asked, but I should not have proposed the offer in the first place.

I understand that recording and editing a YT video takes a lot of effort, and I didn't acknowledge any of it. Normally I would accompany my criticism with some kind of praise about the gameplay etc, but honestly I couldn't finish watching because the continuity of the game was broken so frequently that the experience was just bad. Personally I prefer watching games with no interruption at all. I find every type of embedded post-game commentary distracting, even in text format. Nevertheless I've seen people in other channels, I think in Hugh's channel specifically, appreciate this style of video, so take my feedback with a grain of salt. It's just my two cents, I am not representing the Catan community in any way.

Nothing to apologize for! I appreciate the feedback. I have found that as a viewer, I appreciate when other channels add analysis and acknowledge potential mistakes/areas for improvement in gameplay. This game was longer than average and I also missed a number of predictions of what would happen or opportunities to make better decisions, so I wanted to add some of that analysis, especially with a longer video than I normally post. The game in my next video moved faster and I think my live commentary was sharper, so I didn’t include as much postgame commentary. I’ll continue listening to feedback and hopefully find the right balance that my viewers like the most!

Just because I won doesn't mean I didn't make any mistakes! I agree, I think it would have been better to do that instead of building the extra road past the sheep port. It was also possible that red could plow me with a road builder, but the odds of that happening would be lower than me using the extra road past the sheep port productively

Appreciate it! Missing that definitely would’ve been a big blunder that could have cost me the game. And totally agree about red - that was great coordination from the table to feed red more roads, especially for a game without voice chat

I totally agree with you about the future dice rolls not impacting the quality of past decisions, I think it would have been more accurate to say something along the lines of “we’ll see if not 3:1ing my sheep for wheat comes back to bite me this game.” In respect to the initial placement decision, I think it’s fair to say that I tunneled on the 4-5-10, but I was very confident that if I didn’t take that spot, the 5-9-10 would be the right pick. If I determined the 9-10 was likely to be taken by someone else, I would have been comfortable taking the 5-9-10 and pointing left towards the ports without taking any extra time to determine the viability of other spots. Although it didn’t happen in this case, I still think that the 9-10 rarely gets taken and the 8-10 typically does. In addition to what I thought was the likeliest scenario of one player playing wheatless with the 8-4-3 on the right and the 9-4-3 on the left, there was also a nonzero possibility that one player would choose to take the 6-5-11 instead of the 6-5-12, opening up another triple hex spot with wheat.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@jakeeauxNot 3:1 was a misstake. You had 1 Ore in hand, 3 wood and 3 sheep. Meaning any roll would put you over. But if you 3:1 you would need to hit 2 or 3 rolls. And the biggest reason Why I think its wrong is beauce in that current game state getting a city is the main target. And here you need to calculate that to Get the city you need 2 ore and 2 wheat. If the 10 roll you Get 2 ore and if the 5 roll you Get a wheat meaning that if you port 5+10 gives you Get city. In addation this play becomes eaiser to perform because you produce a lot of sheep beeing og the 8 and 4, and trading for a sheep seems easy. And you will never use 3 sheep in the near future (3 pop or 3 settels…)

​@@jakeeaux Ah, OK. I wasn't aware that you had identified the 9-5-10 as the primary alternative. Your decision at the last seconds of your turn looked more panicky than it actually was. 🙂

@AthleticAtlaz I totally agree that a city was the main objective. I think that I may have been overinfluenced by the possibility that a 7 could roll, with the 10 ore bing the most likely target, and that I might want to 3:1 for ore instead the next turn.

@JohnSmithEx I mentioned that I was interested in the 5/9/10 at 1:31 while first position was still deciding where to go, but I did not explain fully that I had determined that would 100% be my backup spot if I decided the 4/5/10 was not fully viable after attempting to place out the other initial settlements. I’ll try to be more thorough in explaining my thought process in the future!

Unfortunately, that’s the way probability is sometimes. Even though 11 should happen less often, there are sometimes games where it does happen more. Sometimes, you just have to try and overcome challenges the dice give you
