It’s mostly because I’m the stay-at-home parent and I only speak Japanese and English! Other than that, we thought it would be slightly easier for an English/Japanese speaker to learn Serbian later in life, than an English/Serbian speaker to learn Japanese, since English and Serbian are more closely related structurally than Japanese and English . Now that our oldest kid is catching up with monolingual kids in school, I’m (slowly) trying to learn Serbian with her. But it’s very hard to find kids-friendly Serbian learning material online!

It's not necessary for them to know perfectly, but some basic things would be fine.But who am I to give advice to anyone? I see that you are a good family and that is the most important thing.
