Singer Sewing Machines has the odd distinction of being one of the few companies that made an endangered species go extinct. It owned Louisiana forestland that was the last refuge of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, the largest of its type and an icon of the South. Around 1940 Singer decided to sell the land - to a logging company. Conservation groups pleaded with Singer to reconsider but the company refused, and under the laws of the time there was nothing that could be done. Singer sold the land, the logging company cut down the forest, and the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker went extinct.

Once again this is NOT the big dig. That ended in 2003. Change the title to indicate that it is the Zakim bridge into the I93 tunnel that was once referred to as the big dig. That is like calling the Chunnel the Chunnel boring project.

3:55. Tikka- that must be an Indian restaurant. The site was once a themed restaurant called The Ground Round. It was a bit of a carnival theme, and way ahead of its time - big screen projector TVs, memorabilia on the walls, relatively darkly lit, and free peanuts where you could throw the shells on the floor. The place smelled like popcorn.

0:02 Pearle eye center has been there since at least 1980. The Goodyear store has been there since at least 1975. The Arby's between them was a Roy Roger's late 70s to mid 80s. The ikea Store sat on a former Korvette's store facing Broadway, also next to it was the "Twin Theater" - as the name applies it had two movie screens- innovative for the 1970s. I saw the first Star Wars film there in 1977. This IKEA opened about 1989.
