เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 มี.ค. 2021
Welcome to Film My Trail Run. Dave here and my goal is to help promote the sport of trail running. I love running adventures and challenges and by starting this channel I have created yet another excuse to spend more time on the trails.
Get To Know The Ray Miller Trails Before Race Day
Having been out on the course over a number on consecutive weekends I decided to put what was initially supposed to be a short video together. This one won't be for everyone but if you are running, or thinking of running, one of the races hopefully you will get something out of it.

Kodiak 50K in Big Bear California. I hadn't trained for it so my strategy was to go out hard and hopefully cling on in the second half. It kinda worked.
The LA Marathon 2024 - Breaking 3 Hours
มุมมอง 1.5K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
An Irishman running the LA Marathon on St. Patrick's Day. What an adventure. The ceremony kicked off in Dodger Stadium and meandered through 26.2 miles of the best sights the city has to offer. I really had to grind in the second half but couldn't be happier with the result.
Three Weeks to the L.A. Marathon - Last Long Run - A Good Time To Talk All Things Running
มุมมอง 52910 หลายเดือนก่อน
With 20 miles to cover I headed down to Venice Beach to check out what was going down in this crazy global microcosm. I wasn’t disappointed. I also took the opportunity to talk about all my dreams, hopes and aspirations for 2024. Fun Times.
The Sean O'Brien 100KM - The Quest for a Western States Qualifier
มุมมอง 2.6K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sean O'Brien is a tough 100K but how could I resist a day spent running in the Santa Monica Mountains when they are right on my doorstep? I think I may have finally figured out what is required to survive in these hot races. A Western States qualifier and a lesson learned....now that's what I call a good day at the office.
Training for Sean O'Brien 100K
มุมมอง 59910 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video took an unprecedented amount of time to publish. I started recording in October and finally published the "recce" video in February 2 weeks after the race itself actually finished up. I had to publish it first though because if I jumped straight into editing the race footage I would never have circled back to complete this. Shout out to LetsWanderPhotography for the short pre-race in...

Leadville Trail 100 - Nowhere To Hide When The Wheels Come Off
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
I didn't think it would be easy...but I didn't think it would be this hard either. After spending 3 weeks at altitude I was well trained and acclimatised. And yet I stood in disbelief at how quickly my race went from hero to zero. Suddenly my tank was completely empty. I struggled to put one foot on front of the other. I thought my race was over...but then I remembered what I promised Ken and M...

มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
It's time to run. The race kicks off tomorrow at 4am. Nothing more I can do now. IT'S SHOWTIME!! After another good week of picking off those final sections of the course I am ready to race. I was absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to meet the legends that are Ken and Marilee, race directors. They've been doing this for 40 years. Thanks everyone for following along on my journey and wi...
The Long Road To Leadville - Episode 10 - Course Reconnaissance
มุมมอง 794ปีที่แล้ว
Course reconnaissance is worth its weight in gold. This episode details my efforts to get boots on the ground and see as much of the Leadville course as I possibly can. With it being less than a week now until the big event it is very important also that I don't over do it and leave myself fatigued on race morning.
The Long Road To Leadville - Episode 9 - Touchdown in Leadville
มุมมอง 732ปีที่แล้ว
After so many weeks and months of training it is hard to believe I have finally landed in Leadville. The plan now is to get out and see as much of the course as possible...without overcooking myself before the big day on August 19th.

The Long Road To Leadville - Episode 5....and 6 - Checking my Armoury
มุมมอง 640ปีที่แล้ว
Two more busy weeks of training. I'm very happy now with my cardiovascular fitness but I know, from experience, that stomach distress will be my greatest enemy on race day so that is where much attention will be levied going forward. In this episode I also talk about my confirmed pacer and my discussion with a 16 time finisher of the Leadville 100.
The Long Road To Leadville - Episode 4 - Getting My House in Order
มุมมอง 654ปีที่แล้ว
Lining up my pacer, my new Coros watch, and my discussion with a 16 time Leadville 100 participant. I also decide to try some gut training 100 calories every 20 minutes. Things are moving in the right direction but it is definitely time now to get laser focused on the task at hand.

Good recce done there Dave. I'm sure it'll pay off. Best of luck in da race.
Thanks Kate, and you’re right, I heard stories of people going off course yesterday. Nice when you don’t have to worry about getting lost…there are enough other things to worry about 😂
Thanks for putting this together. I recce’d the first 16 miles and then back down RM and then the I checked out up/down 6 miles from Mishe Mokwa (Yerba Buena AS). But never got to the middle portion. Also, since you are planning to bomb to the finish, you actually turn off a side trail off of Ray Miller when you are just past the campground and turn back towards the campground. You don’t hit the trailhead and run back up the road. I will be significantly behind you on race day but I hope you have a great race!
Thanks Smashycrashy, it sounds like you got in some good time out on the course yourself. As I like to say, “that’s money in the bank right there”. All the best on Saturday, it looks like being a hot one 🥵
Thanks for the fix! Worked like a charm!
Great, glad it worked for you. I am still using my pair, but only for podcasts.
Love this channel. Definitely think it's better than the 1.6K subscribers would indicate. Just one comment: I think a camera upgrade could really help you. I watch a lot of ultra-running channels and these days all the popular ones have extremely stabilised footage with amazing colours.
Thanks for the kind comment and, more importantly, for the honest feedback. Yeah this video in particular had some serious shake going on. I think i was out of practice with the video making process. I have a few more busy months with work but i will be able to put a much bigger emphasis on my FMTR channel after that. I have exciting plans that should see the improvements you have mentioned incorporated into future videos. Thanks again for watching 👍
Great to see you back posting a race video again. Was missing them. Feel like I'm there with you when I watch them. Keep em coming.
Thanks Kate. Was good to crank out a video after such a long break from FMTR. More to come 👍
Glad to see you back! Well done looked like a lovely trail... fairly different looking than our djouce boardworks!
Thanks Joan. I look forward to getting back on those sleepers again ❤️ and making more videos. The time is coming…watch this space 😉
Great run Dave! Delighted to see a FMTR video🤗🤗🤗
Thanks Sandra. This video went together pretty quickly so I really have no excuse and I do love the process. A few more busy months ahead but already the ideas for new videos I could make are creeping into my subconscious mind. FMTR is only getting started 💪🏃🏻♂️🇮🇪
I have tried with JBweld plasticWELD and for now it seems to work well see when cured🤞
Brilliant video. Great to see you back 🏃♂️
Thanks Tom. As we say in Ireland “I’m back, but I’m not back back” 😂 Still that video went together pretty fast so I have no excuse really for the next one in 6 weeks 👍
Congratulations , great to see you posted a race video
Thanks Alan, I know, it’s been a while, right? It will probably continue to be sporadic over to coming months as I wind down over here in The States…but after that?? Watch out world here I come 😂😂
Great video! Shame the fires caused the courses to be moved. They essentially reused the same courses as the summer Holcomb Valley trail series the race director also runs. I ran this course last June and there are some great views. It looks like though the UTMB version has much better aids stations! Hopefully they'll be able to get back to the original courses in 2025.
Thanks. Yeah it was unfortunate the course needed to be moved. The original course looked like one very interesting big loop out of, and back into, Big Bear Village. At least the show still went on. Thanks for commenting 👍
Great job
Thank’s for that, looking back on the video I think it makes it look easier than it actually was 🥵
I see you're really getting into the Cali vibe with those shades, nice to see you back racing.
Thanks Tadeusz, ha ha, you’re right, the shades are very SoCal 😂😂. Glad to be back myself. Two of my big loves are racing and making videos so hopefully I can continue to eek out the time amidst all the other things going on.
didn't even break sweat 😂 vwell done 👍✅
Thank you, you’re right, clearly I wasn’t trying hard enough 😂😂 Glad to be back making videos though. I really enjoy the process 👍
It's a great day! A new FMTR video. Well done Dave.
Ha ha thank you, I appreciate the support. I see plenty more videos to be made on the horizon so hang tight because we’re in for a bumpy ride 😂😂
Thank you!!!! GREAT!!! This is for me
Thank you but be aware I did lose the high notes after the fix. Still works fine for podcasts but I wouldn’t use them to appreciate music unless I was really stuck 👍
Rattle is gone, but so are low frequencies:( I'll buy another brand
Yep, same happened for me. Still use them for podcasts though. I will never buy Aftershockz again 😡
How does the course profile compare to somewhere like the Dublin Marathon
Hmm, that’s a good question and the short answer is I really don’t remember other than the fact that neither one is all that hilly. What I will say is that Dublin has much more of a BIG city marathon feel with big crowds right along the course.
Thanks for the video. This is inspiring!
Thank you. I’m a big fan of EcoTrail Wicklow.
@@filmmytrailrun I'm thinking of registering for next year. 80km would definitely be too much for me but do you think the 47km race is a good introduction to an ultra? I've done a handful of road marathons (I usually finish a bit under 3h30mn) but I have no idea how I would cope on trail with incline.
If you have run 3.30 marathons you are definitely able for the 47km. I’m not sure if you have been running trails already but you do need to get out in the hills because different muscles are worked. My advice would be to get out and recce the course if you have the opportunity and just go for it. You never learn as much as you do on your first ultra. All the best with it and enjoy the journey, after all, that is really the reward.
Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
Where art thou david
Ha ha, thanks for reaching out. I know, right? Basically, between working a full time on site job and, more importantly, trying to cram in as many adventures as I can before I return to Ireland early in the new year, something had to give. I love making the videos so, like a volcano, consider me dormant but definitely not extinct. Or, as a wise man once said “I’ll be back” (spoken in a heavy Austrian accent).
Congratulations, great video. Definitely one to add too the list ...
Thanks Kieran, yeah, it’s a race that shows you the very best of what the Dublin/Wicklow mountains have to offer. It’s on this weekend so if you’re in the area you should take a trip down to the Bray sea front 🌊
Great video man and Congrats on the PR! Is there anything you wish you would have had prior to the race starting after you checked in your bag? I'm running chicago this year and just trying to prepare gear. thanks.
Thanks, no, kept it simple. 6-8 gels during the race with water. Then some comfortable clothes in the drop bag at the end. One tip I would give you though is: if you are arranging to meet other runners after the marathon I would recommend meeting while you’re still “inside”, maybe near the fountain somewhere. Once you go outside to the recommended meeting area it is crazy busy. Enjoy yourself, it’s a great, super well organized world major 💪🏃🏻♂️❤️
@@filmmytrailrun thanks brotha!! great information and great video!!
Thanks for documenting this wonderful day! Watched it three times already haha. You have motivated me to run the Wicklow Ecotrail 80k this year. Will be my first time in Ireland and first time running 80k!
Ah brilliant, and thanks for watching the video…three times. I hope you have a great run. My advice? Don’t attack it…enjoy it. You’ll have a blast 🏃🏻♂️💪⛰️
Hi dave, well done and great video.
Thanks Joe, yeah, that day worked out better than I had expected. I hope your own running is going well.
I'm thinking about doing this just for the chips. 🤣
That’s a good enough reason. Chips never taste better than when you come in after a long day in the Scottish Highlands. Don’t think about it, sign up now and figure the rest out later 😀
Good work!!
Thank you, and thanks for watching 🙏
I put some cotton inside, then sealed with putty
That works too 👍💡
저도 구멍뚫고 솜을 밀어 넣어 해결했어요~
Living in Vancouver and coming home for this race this September! First race in Ireland! Very excited, thank you for the reccy video!
It’s such a great course. If you have forgotten some of what the REAL Ireland looks like then this course won’t be long in reminding you. Have a blast and thanks for watching 🏃🏻♀️❤️🇮🇪
So you say...Dont do it without poles? I did it twice (succeeded once - timed out day 3 1st time around - by 5 mins) and poles wouldnt have helped me. In fact they would have hindered me. You need less weight, and less faff on CWU. But I guess - if you feel like poles would help you then go for it. But you can indeed do it without poles. the one I failed? 2021 - COVID, single tents, and brillliant sunshine in August... The one I succeeded - 2022. 8 days and the worst CWU weather on all the events history. Non stop rain, floods, high winds, high drop out rate, and I was the (one of if not the) oldest to finish at almost 62. As far as navigation - do the routes as recces. learn the key points where you can make mistakes. I recced 4,5,6,7 and I had already run day 1-3. That helped enormously. And as far as food - I loded up on days 1 and 2 with bars and gels, I collapsed with no energy end of day 2. Day 3 I completed with mild hypothermia. But I switched to sugar diet mid way (fizzy drinks, tic tacs), loaded up with soups and chips in the evening. and end of day 4 I bought a lot of sugar loaded food to sustain me through to the end. Shoes - Altra Timp 4 wide toed shoes and soft on the feet but admittedly less grip than some (no blisters - duplicate replacement shoes swapped end of day 5 - take at least 2 pairs). In 2022, with it being so wet, it didnt make a lot of difference in my opinion. Good video. But I say again - you can do the run without poles.
Apologies for the slow response, I’ve been off TH-cam for a little while. 2022 was the year I did it also. A wet one to be sure. Can you do CWU without poles? Absolutely, but I am so used to them now that they really add very little faff and I wouldn’t be without them in any mountainous race longer than about 50k. Sounds like you had to experiment with what food worked for you. To finish in 2022 is an added badge of honor. 270 started, 104 finished. Still one of my fondest memories. Planning to go back as a volunteer at some stage in the future. I hope your running is going well and you have more great adventures ahead 🏃🏻♂️⛰️💪
👍
Thank you 🙏
Hi David. I've watched this video so many times now even my kids say "Are you watching David again Daddy?" LOL. I'm running the Limerick marathon this Sunday so I love the insight this video gives. Thank you and I hope all is well.
Ha ha, that’s too funny 😂 The very best of luck on Sunday. Keep the energy going in and you’ll do just fine 💪🏃🏻♂️🥳
Thanks for the video - its nicely made and gave us a nice selection of the course on a daily basis. All the way from Vietnam !
Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. Are you living the expat lifestyle in Vietnam? I’ll never forget taking a slow boat through Halong Bay. Breathtaking ☀️⛰️
@@filmmytrailrun I have been here for 5 years, pre co-vid and got married here and have a daughter already. Will be coming back to the UK next year but just for education for the children, after that i will return to live in Vietnam as it is a lot safer in Vietnam than in the UK and we dont have immigration problems like we do in the UK, as im sure you are aware off. I am also an ultra runner, i have completed the Moab 240 in Utah and have done a solo run of the coast to coast and the pennine way prior to me coming the Vietnam and thats why i appreciate your film of the cape wrait run - what do you think about running in one way the entire length rather than broken stages as you did ? thanks a lot mate.
Great Video. It looks so easy for you running and recording . I have done 3 times the half , this year is my first full in Limerick and my 7th marathon :) wish me luck . One question , you didn't take any gel during the course? and congrats once again
Thank you, and the very best of luck to you in the marathon. I took six or maybe seven gels during the race. I’m pretty sure I made a comment on it when I took the last one, salted watermelon 😋 Good energy management is key to your success so definitely take on something regularly after mile 4 or 5.
You were fast with a gopro and the course looked super flat which was a bit different to New York
Thanks, yeah, Chicago is a good course for a personal best. People think New York should be flat but, as you probably found out, there are plenty of sneaky ups and downs in there. Thanks for tuning in 👍
Well done, great running
Thanks Tadeusz, just another day at the office these days 😂
Congrats Dave ! You ran a great race & time. Thanks for capturing the atmosphere of the LA Marathon for us. Looked like a lot of fun ! Well done to Claire in her race too . Her Scottish grit got her over the finish line in spite of her painful injury. A St Patrick’s Day that you will both be talking about for years to come !! 🇮🇪 🏴 ☘️
Thanks Murs, L.A. Marathon on St. Patrick’s Day. Yeah, had to be done ☘️
Well done Dave! Thats an incredible time! And well done Claire. Grinding it out when your injured is a marathon in itself. Well done both of you!
Thanks Joan, yeah I’m delighted with that result and Claire will be back to fight another day. She has much more to give 🏃🏻♀️💪. Recovery time here for the time being before we decide on the next adventure 😉 Thanks as always for tuning in ❤️
Great work bro, love the energy . That mental resilience of embracing adversity and keep the momentum forward is chefs kiss. ALL GAS NO BRAKES BB 🔥 congrats
Thanks man, yep, full gas until you cross that finish line. It definitely became a mental game in the second half but I am very happy I could keep it together and cross that finish line strong. Thanks for watching 👍
Great stuff man, good job following through 💪💪💪
Thanks man, yeah, keep grinding until you cross that finish line. Delighted with that result. A hotter and hillier course than I expected. Thanks for watching 👍
Well on ya Claire and Dave! Ireland 🇮🇪. A great film and a great run….gopro and all!!! Slainte!!
Thanks Aine, yeah, delighted to finish under the 3 hours, especially when I was wearing the green on St. Paddy’s Day. Go On The Irish !! 🇮🇪 ☘️ 🏃🏼♂️
Fantastic david and claire well done! Great to see the streets of LA and felt like we are there. Id say the heat was rough, congrats 🎉
Thanks my friend, yeah first time seeing the roads when they weren’t rammed with 🚘 🚙 🚗. Hot indeed, and hillier than I expected, but that just made crossing that finish line all the more satisfying.
And while recording the video. Amazing. Come on indeed!
I had to summon the beast within. You’ll know all about it in a few months. I look forward to cracking that nut together 🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️
Sure that was a great grind Dave 2.57 smashed it ..
Thanks Alan, yeah you won’t hear me complain about that. Very happy with the result. Thanks for checking out the vid 👍
Brilliant run/video as always - congrats to you both ☘️…. Shame it had to be Heineken tho 😂😂😂 🤷🏼♂️. Guess you gotta be grateful for anything after that slog 🙌🏻 🍻
Ha ha, yeah, you take what you’re given in these circumstances. Thanks, as always, for the support now it’s time for this fish to get off his bicycle and back into the hills. Not my greatest analogy…but you know what I mean 😂
Brilliant well done
Thanks Pah, I’m very happy with how that ended up. Bit of a grind mind you but I guess that only made it all the sweeter 😉
Quick!!! Great stuff Dave 👏. That looked like a grind that just kept on going. Hats off to your head game there.
Thanks, yeah, made my mind up to grind to the finish line and let the cards fall where they might. Couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Thanks for tuning in, it’s not easy to make a road marathon look interesting 👍
Awesome 'grind' Dave super video and what an atmosphere along those streets!!
Thanks Jon, yeah delighted with how that turned out in the end. It always feels better when you’ve had to work for it. Time now to get back in the hills.
Good man Dave grinding it home in 2:57. That's a win. Looks amazing to see da streets of LA with not a car in sight. Well done to Claire for persevering to da end with a hamstring injury. Ur both amazing!!
Thanks Kate, yeah, quiet streets in LA is a rare sight indeed. Great day out in the city.
Really enjoyed watching, great video and well done on 17th. You stayed so positive (on camera at least), and you kept going so well after being sick. Superb.
Thanks a lot for the kind words. Yeah, so long as I can keep moving I’m generally happy to stay in the game. Finishing can be painful for a while, but a DNF? That stings for ever more so my motto, “avoid wherever possible” 😉 Thanks again for tuning in, and hey, happy running 🏃🏻♂️💪
Sounds like you are going to be busy in 2024, bro !! I'll be there every step of the way !! 😘
As you always are 🙏 Thanks sis
