We came across a typical mated pair of wolfeels. The gray one the left is the male. The female is a younger adult stage animal. She was much more curious about us divers than the male. Watch how the male tries to assert his authority. Yea, right. She wants to come out. A few moments later, she comes out of the den and swims with us. This is in the southern reach of Puget Sound, WA USA.

      All octopuses die as the young begin to hatch. It's the last act of their lives. In this case, the eggs were a bit late hatching as she moved from the den and out to the ocean. We removed a few thousand to our lab to witness this. SOP for the cephalopods.

    Why is the big octopus in such a small enclosure?

    • @starfishdiving
      @starfishdiving 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it's first captured, the octo is placed in a quarantine tank to make sure it's going to be OK. After that, it gets moved to a much larger aquarium. Generally, we have them for 6-8 months. When they are at peak breeding age, we release them.

    • @starfishdiving
      @starfishdiving 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. Not a problem at all. No, we don't tame them. They are intelligent, can do simple reasoning. They are not dangerous to humans at all. We do release them at an age where they are at peak breeding age.

      @catherinechase5858 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One does not need to be smart or even educated to know how to speak politely or know when to stop and listen before replying, that sassy young octopus has more intelligence and grace than most of the barnacle heads commenting here. Can you tell us how your own lack of education gives you a moral authority to tell others what is right or wrong in any subject matter? Can you explain a safer, more cost effect way for marine biologists to study and learn about how to best conserve and protect these amazing wild creatures in their freezing cold, dark, murky habitat? Why can't we all be celebrating these big hearted, even bigger brained scientists for their selfless work diving in freezing, murky waters with barely any visibility and all to often sudden and dangerously high currents all in an endless collaborated effort to study and preserve this species instead of taking cheap shots at them from the safety and warmth of our mobile phones? The Giant Pacific Octopus has become a living symbol and mascot for the Pacific Northwest, loved and adored by millions because of the knowledge, education, awareness shared and provided to the public by hard working scientists like Randol and his colleagues here. So I ask you to not stay quiet, never stop asking questions, but please do try and show a little more respect.

    I too have been diving this site for since the 1970's (Yes, some of us were diving in the stone age). I really don't condone the feeding of wild animals in their habitat. It is interesting that this is a young animal. Yet, it has (possibly?) started to identify with divers and food. Interesting to note: Some of the adults will come out when divers are around. This behavior about food, divers, etc, has not been scientifically vetted. Yet, the actions might support this thinking.
