John Renbourn's Ship of Fools in concert
Many thanks to Steve Tilston for making this available. It scrubbed up pretty well for an old VHS tape. John with Steve, Maggie Boyle and Tony Roberts in Italy in the early 1980s playing some real Folk Baroque.

The Lady and the Unicorn
มุมมอง 1K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here's a cover of John Renbourn's iconic Lady and the Unicorn played on John's original, and equally iconic, 1962 Gibson J50. Today would have been John's 80th birthday so this is a good day to play his music and remember his genius - and, for those of us who were lucky enough to know him, the man himself. Many thanks to Remy Froissart the guardian of this amazing guitar for letting me use it. ...

Here's another piece from John Renbourn's 'SirJohnALot' album played by tutor Mike on the original Gibson J50 which John was playing at the time. Many thanks to Rémy Froissart for graciously lending us such a precious instrument for our workshop this year. John Renbourn would have been 79 today and this is respectfully dedicated to him on his birthday. Erik Satie was a composer John admired and studied - I remember discussing this arrangement with him at the first of the Renbourn Guitar Workshops which he loved doing so much, back in 2010 and I can't play it now without thinking of him and those times.
Veronica - Bert Jansch (Cover)

Veronica -sometimes known as Casbah because of a mix-up back in the 1960's. It's Veronica for sure though as Bert's own notes on this when it was included on a compilation (The Bert Jansch Sampler) referenced Charlie Mingus' Better Get It In Your Soul. Bert almost certainly wrote this after hearing Davey Graham's version of that. Anyway, this kind of accidentally got included in the last Renbou...

    • @daviddkilpatrick
      @daviddkilpatrick 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not exactly sure what it is, but it's a five-course cittern in an octave mandolin scale length. I had a six-courser in more of a mandola scale, longer than tenor, for a while. Five course is more common, but the six-course can be tuned in 'alternative' guitar tunings, without becoming a sort of 12-string guitar. I never saw John with this instrument but if I had around the end of the 1990s I'd surely have asked him about it. Never saw Ship of Fools and if this really was early 1980s I know why, work meant not going to anything for a while!

      Strings used were Ernie Ball Everlast - 50-10 with the first string replaced with an 11. John always said that most sets were "too heavy in the middle" i.e. the 4th and 3rd strings. The Everlast 50s have a 28 and a 20 at 4 and 3. They sound pretty good on the J50.

    Thank you for this, it sounds wonderful, light, and jangly. My friend uses .9 to .48 strings on his acoustic, and I just can't get the feel of them, even though I only use .11 to .52 on my Lowden, a small difference in number but a big difference in feeling.

    • @RenbournGuitarWorkshops-GLUG
      @RenbournGuitarWorkshops-GLUG 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, string gauge is a very personal thing. John used to use (6-1) .48, .38, .28, .18, .14, .10. He felt that the middle 2 wound strings - D & G were too heavy in most sets. He later favoured .11 instead .10 on the first course because .10 sounded a bit thin. The strings I used here weren't that light 50 - 11 but tuned down a semitone (again something John (& Bert) often did.

After a lovely weekend of nice food, drink and great music, he delved into the depths of his little green canvas shoulder bag and very kindly put together a set of strings for me from all the loose ones in the bag. Of course I've treasured them and never used them, and have them in front of me now. They are: Rotosound 52,40,28,20 D'Addario 15,12. Great times! Keep up all the great work.
