An ode to friendship (Fenghuang, China)
**OPEN FOR RECOMMENDATIONS**
Kym and I spent a few days in Fenghuang, an ancient town an hour outside of Zhangjiajie, with the sole aim of sharing conversations, sleeping, and walking. So that's what we did.
☆ We took an hour long train to Fenghuang (station: 凤凰古城站) from Zhangjiajie (station: 张家界西站) and then were driven to our accommodation by the owner of the guesthouse we stayed at.
☆ We stayed at Wang Jiang Reclusive Inn, which is a family-run guesthouse right on the river. The owners were very sweet, picking us up from the train station and sharing lots of local recommendations of where to eat and explore.
www.booking.com/Share-0mzUL0
☆ We recommend this local-run and extremely affordable Hunanese restaurant called Miao Jia Lao Xiang Cai Guan (苗家老湘菜馆). Some restaurants are run by entrepreneurs from other towns, but this one is local to Fenghuang.

We took a 20 hour overnight sleeper train from Nanjing to Guilin/Yangshuo. Would definitely do it again and I 100% recommend. I would also recommend showering beforehand and getting to the station at least an hour ahead of depa...

    Hi Yasmin! Thank you so so much for making this video, I'm in year 12 and am going to apply for Human Sciences at Oxford and it's just so lovely to be able to hear someone's real experience and application! I'd just like to ask, what extracurriculars would you recommend that would be useful for human sciences? My A levels are biology, chemistry and music and I've done MUN too. I'm also a classical pianist and have presented workshops at a leadership conference on music and how it can be used to create a better world and I have many extracurriculars related to music like graded music exams, many performances and also organised a charity music concert to raise money for an education charity. It would be incredibly helpful if you could tell me what other extracurriculars would be beneficial for my application? Thanks!! 💕

It might be handy to know that the Vietnamese word for vegan is 'chay' and that Vietnamese vegans/vegetarians often choose this diet for religious reasons, and so do not eat garlic/onion/chilli as well. thanks so much for this video, its really helpful! Im more into human geography than biology, and definitely not ecology. How large a part does ecology/genetics/evolution play in the course, compared to applying sociology/human geography/anthroplogy current world issues? like wheres the main emphasis

    • @yasminlinh9785
      @yasminlinh9785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I would say it's quite balanced between the social and natural sciences (2 papers for the natural sciences and 2 papers for the social sciences) and the best part is you can really see the links between everything. One of the coolest things I've learnt about this year is gene culture co-evolution - how human culture can actually alter gene frequencies :ooo. I didn't think I'd like ecology and I will admit some bits are a bit dry, but learning about conservation, the anthropocene etc. has been really eye opening and enjoyable.

    • @yasminlinh9785
      @yasminlinh9785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! Hope your interviews have been going well. I made a video with general tips/advice here: th-cam.com/video/QfCPTt1lO5o/w-d-xo.html But if you don't have time to watch it, just make sure to talk through your thinking and any questions that arise, to stay calm, and if you are super unsure about something, ask the interviewers. I was unsure about something so I asked them, then I used the information they gave me to answer their original question :) I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to tell you what questions were asked specifically, and they vary from year to year and college to college anyway, but they usually reflect the academic/subject background of the interviewer(s). Small tip though: maybe take a little bit of time to consider Human Sciences in the context of society - in current events, in cultural trends, in changes that can be made - and how a degree as diverse as this can help you to understand it. In all of my interviews, they seemed to want me to connect Human Sciences to the wider world. Good luck!

    Super interesting video! It's so rare to see someone doing Human Sciences because it's such a small course :) I'm so in love with it and I've applied for it this year. If you don't mind - what college did you apply for and how did you find the TSA when you did it?

    • @yasminlinh9785
      @yasminlinh9785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya, yes it is a brilliant but small course (which isn't a bad thing at all!). I applied for Mansfield College (where I'm at at the moment. We have the best food, especially at formals (friends at other colleges agree ahaha), and apparently we were voted as having the best vegetarian food!). The TSA was unlike anything I'd done before so it was unusual but once you do a few past papers you get into the hang of it!

    • @jedela
      @jedela 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yasmin Linh Thank you for replying so fast!! (Also just realised you mentioned Mansfield at the start of the vid - sorry!) I actually put it down as my preferred college bc I’m so sold on good veggie food and friendly people. I found the TSA pretty rough and it didn’t go as well as I’d hoped so I’ll be over the moon if I even get an interview. How was your interview?

    • @yasminlinh9785
      @yasminlinh9785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jedela I really enjoyed my interview actually, but it will probably depend on what your interviewer chooses to focus on (stats, biology, anthropology... our course is very diverse!) and what your interests are. It wasn't easy by any means, but it was a thought-provoking experience which definitely made me question my own assumptions! :)

    • @jedela
      @jedela 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yasmin Linh Thank you for the advice!! I’ve been reallocated to Harris Manchester (which was to be expected bc I’ll be a mature student but it looks super nice too) and have my interview soon. • @yasminlinh9785
      @yasminlinh9785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jedela No problem! All the best! Unfortunately, I don't have any book recommendations as I didn't read anything specifically for my course prior to my interview - most of my motivation to do the course came from real life experiences (e.g. conferences, articles I'd read over the years, and panel discussions as I mention in the video). However, you could check out the Human Sciences reading list for some suggestions. (www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/suggested-reading-and-resources?wssl=1
