Gnarr Productions is a channel dedicated to railfanning videos for railfans and train enthusiests alike. I'm based in central North Carolina and occasionally able to travel out of state to explore some amazing things. The name "Gnarr" comes from my gaming tag from back in the day.
Montana Rail Link - Second Subdivision Action (Railfanning the MRL in Fall 2023)
Full extended cut of my trip to Montana in the Fall of 2023. This video contains action from MRL’s second sub including Bozeman Pass, Livingston, Logan, Manhattan, and many more towns east of Helena. This video also includes some action around the yard in Helena, including a GP9 in yard service.
A lot of the sights and sounds in this video have been featured on this channel before and I figured it was time I did an extended cut of the original.
While I don’t have the train ID’s for any of the trains I witnessed on this trip, all of the rest of the information is listed in the video.

Fun fact: 611 once hauled Dwight Eisenhower as a passenger. She transported him and his staff from Columbus, Ohio to Kenova, West Virginia during his (successful) 1952 presidential campaign. The N&W Historical Society apparently discovered this a few years back when they were going through old operating records.

How many times a day does CSX or Norfolk Southern appear in Goldsboro?
Norfolk Southern has a daily turn local that runs between Selma and New Bern (P98 Tue-Sun. & P96 on Mondays) There is another local that runs to Goldsboro from Selma (P03 Mon-Fri). CSX has L231 which runs Saturday through Thursday between Warsaw and Rocky Mount (turn job). L236 runs from Goldsboro yard on the south side of town to Mt Olive and back. There are several grain mills south of Goldsboro that regularly receive loaded grain trains in and subsequently send empties out. Plus NS has occasional Potash trains headed for the Port of Morehead and occasionally a loaded grain train for a Grain Mill outside of Kinston. That's pretty much all the traffic that currently comes through Goldsboro. It's kinda hard to catch anything there and it is definitely less interesting as most of the moves happen at night. A few happen during daylight hours.
Was this taken last December? Because on that day, I saw and caught that Conrail Unit with Coal Freight at Silver Spring, Maryland.

I didn't like the Chargers at first but they've grown on me.
I’m not a fan of them, but I like the paint scheme. It’s very sharp. Plus I’m glad they are investing in their power.

How about AC&W restoring some of the AC6000CWs stored on their property as working units and paint them in their paint scheme? I would love it!
It would definitely be cool! I don’t know if they have the need for locomotives of that power though unfortunately.
Interesting conversion of CSX AC6000CW 656 into AC&W locomotive bar car 87. This is a lot different than when she was new and leading intermodal trains!

No, a circuit had tripped in the motor causing the air to dump, that’s atleast what the engineer told the dispatcher.

Thanks! That’s fair. On the east coast we’ve always differentiated between the Santa Fe lettered ones and the BNSF ones as “Warbonnets” and “Fake Bonnets”. Definitely appreciate the clarity on that from an industry perspective!

Trailing on the Auto Train is special but not rare. Leading would be extremely rare, I happened to catch one leading the silver star last year. It’s sad they don’t lead more.

I was on a scheduled 18 hour train ride - 4 delays (2 weather and 2 freight traffic) net 4 hours times loss.
That's crazy. I couldn't imagine being in that scenario.

Thanks Dave! I had not seen one either till last year, they are neat to see for sure! We've been lucky to have been receiving them fairly regularly since then.
I guess they tack train 098 onto a regular train for part of the trip.
Yep! They ran 098 to Selma Yard and then from Selma Yard they tacked it on to the front of P98 to New Bern, from there they got on the turn job to Morehead City.

Yeah this is after they traversed Bozeman pass. The train was fairly long as well.
That in no way appears to be "manned helpers" nor would that make any sense.
I chased the train to where the helper set was dropped off and the crew on board took it east. Not saying it makes sense, but there was a crew on board for the duration.
@@GnarrProductions yeah, except that if the helps are on the head end, the helper crew would be running the entire train alone, not as help, but as train crew. Which, at that point, basically makes the trains crew a deadhead. You can't have two engineers running in the same contiguous consist. You would get, at the very least, beat senseless, more likely a knuckle or a drawbar.
