Power Uptown: Tackling Energy Insecurity Together, NYC Climate Week 2024
On September 27, 2024, Columbia University hosted Power Uptown: Tackling Energy Insecurity Together, a transformative community event that brought hope, knowledge, and action to the forefront of New York City's energy justice movement. Held at The Forum on West 125th Street during Climate Week NYC, this half-day gathering united residents, policymakers, community leaders, and advocates in a shared mission to address energy insecurity and promote equitable access to clean energy solutions. Speakers like Dr. Peggy Shepard, Mychal Johnson, and NYC Council Member Shaun Abreu shared powerful narratives about community resilience and sustainable transformation.
The event featured three powerful components: an Energy Opportunity Expo showcasing practical demonstrations of clean cooking and renewable energy transitions, an Energy Opportunity Teach-in offering resources and success stories, and a compelling Energy Justice Panel Discussion highlighting initiatives across federal, state, and city levels. Attendees explored innovative solutions like the Manhattan Clean Energy Hub, which helps tenants and small businesses access low-cost renewable energy upgrades, and received free NYSERDA Energy Saving kits that could immediately reduce their utility bills. Organizations like Solar One, Con Edison, and the Association for Energy Affordability provided hands-on guidance and support.
More than just an event, Power Uptown was a profound movement toward energy equity, demonstrating that sustainable change happens when communities come together with shared purpose and vision. Supported by Columbia University's Bollinger Convenings and partners like the Bedari Collective, the gathering illuminated a path forward where clean energy is not a privilege, but a fundamental right. For those who attended, the afternoon was a powerful reminder that every individual can contribute to building a more just, sustainable future-one energy-efficient home, one community connection at a time.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Bollinger Convenings at Columbia University, specifically the Office of the President and Office of the Provost, for making Power Uptown possible. Special thanks to our additional supporters, the JPB Foundation and Con Edison, whose commitment to energy justice made this event a reality.
We are deeply grateful to our incredible partners, especially WE ACT for Environmental Justice, and to every community member, resident, and attendee who joined us in tackling energy insecurity. Your passion, engagement, and dedication are the true catalysts for meaningful change.
Together, we are building a more equitable, sustainable future-one community at a time.

Low-income renters, families with children, and new immigrants to the city are more vulnerable of being cold in their homes during the winter due to outdated homes. 🏠 Know The Law: Landlords must provide heat from October 1 to May 31. During the day (6 AM-10 PM), if it’s below 55°F outside, the indoor temperature must be at least 68°F. At night (10 PM-6 AM), it must be at least 62°F. Hot water must be available year-round at 120°F or higher. 🚨 No Heat or Hot Water? First, contact your landlord. If they’re unresponsive, file a complaint by calling 311, TTY (212) 504-4115, or using 311ONLINE or 311MOBILE. 🧤Ways to Stay Warm: Stay warm by layering up with thermal clothing, socks, and beanies, while optimizing your home's warmth using draft stoppers, heavy curtains, and reflective foil behind radiators. Use clever tricks like heating your bed with hot water bottles or flannel sheets, sipping warm drinks, and insulating windows with bubble wrap to stay cozy without relying too much on heating. Check out local heating and warming centers as well! 💬 How do YOU cope with cold winter months? Have you ever dealt with faulty outages? 🔌 Frequent outages can affect your wiring, increasing the risk of electric shock. Electrical shocks can happen in a flash, leaving you stunned or worse. Here’s how to stay safe:
🔍 Inspect outlets & cords for wear and tear regularly
🚫 Avoid using damaged appliances or frayed wires
✅ Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-risk areas
👨‍🔧 Get a licensed electrician to check your wiring for any hidden issues If you or someone else gets shocked:
1️⃣ Turn off the power source immediately, if possible.
2️⃣ Do NOT touch the person with your bare hands; use a non-conductive item (like wood) to separate them from the source.
3️⃣ Call emergency services if the person shows signs of serious injury.
4️⃣ Seek medical attention, even if the shock seems minor. 👉 Make sure to like and share this video! #shareyourstory #newyork #newyorkcity #nyc #energy #cold #hot #hotandcold #energyinsecurity #health #research #study #energyefficiency #efficiency #efficient #resources #tips #nycresources #renters #home #safetytips #homesafety #electricalsafety #emergencypreparedness

How are you staying cool? 🥵 🏜️ The western part of the U.S. is currently experiencing heat waves. 👉 During a heat wave, people, especially those without cooling devices, are at risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, which can cause symptoms like dizziness, confusion, and organ failure if untreated. 👉 Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, those who are pregnant, people with chronic illnesses, and low-income individuals, are particularly at risk because of reduced ability to regulate body temperature and limited access to cooling resources. 👉 Heat cramps and fainting can also occur due to electrolyte imbalance and blood pressure drops from excessive heat. Pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart or respiratory diseases, can be exacerbated in extreme heat, increasing the risk of serious health complications. 👉 To mitigate these effects, it is essential to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat, and seek cooler environments like air-conditioned spaces. 📲 Make sure to share this video! #shareyourstory #newyork #newyorkcity #nyc #energy #cold #hot #heat #hotandcold #energyinsecurity #health #research #study #cost #bills #AC #heatwave #howtostaycool #educate #tips #resources #nycresources

Do you have black mold in your home? 🦠 👉 Exposure to mold can worsen asthma and allergy symptoms, causing congestion, coughing, and breathing difficulties, and can lead to severe reactions like fever and shortness of breath, especially in individuals with compromised immune systems or those exposed to large amounts of mold. Symptoms typically improve once the mold is removed. 👉 Dealing with mold in a rental property can pose serious health risks and requires prompt attention. Tenants should immediately notify their landlord in writing, document the issue with photos, and keep records of any related medical treatments. If the landlord fails to address the problem, tenants may consider requesting a mold inspection, filing a claim with renters' insurance, or pursuing legal action to seek compensation for damages. Knowing your rights, including the “Implied Warranty of Habitability,” can help ensure your living conditions remain safe and habitable. 👉 Make sure to share this video! #shareyourstory #newyork #newyorkcity #nyc #energy #cold #hot #heat #hotandcold #energyinsecurity #health #mold #blackmold #research #study #energyefficiency #efficiency #efficient #cost #bills #resources #nycresources #renters
