Sure ETSU improved. But when the league champ loses by 53 and has their score doubled by Purdue the overall league is clearly down. One might even suggest the fact a seven seed has consistently been playing for league titles in recent seasons shows parity and not greatness from the also-rans, and you don't get to be a 2-bid league that way.

Samford played Purdue on the very first game of the season. Hardly applicable to now. Same ol Marky.

​@@PittsburghMarky So, how many teams are there in NCAA ? 100's ? so Purdue is #2 or #3 arguably in rank in the nation -- calculably in the top less than 1% -- since the first day of play in November -- and you think a smaller league like So Conn should give them a good run for their money ? Especially now that they have beaten almost every team in all Q levels all season (Purdue has)? I don't. What do you think the portal has done to this league, and all smaller leagues ? Nothing? What do you think the portal and player pay has done to the coaches in the smaller leagues ? Nothing ? I say: quit complaining or else you will have nothing to complain about when the conference starts shutting down small college sports. I for one switched from watching Purdue all season and enjoyed these smaller leagues - honestly - because these kids AND coaches are more heroes than those trillion dollar ruined teams - IMO - I am a Purdue alum - just so you know - and I barely watched any Purdue games - it was not as interesting as watching Savage work these guys into a contention team. Or Chattanooga UTC doing so well. I Love Purdue but Zach Edey 3 billion times standing under the basket -- versus new things going on in So Con - I enjoyed what I got in smaller So Con and Conf USA leagues. In respect, I just disagree.

@@russellbrown140 When does it stop being applicable? If they'd lost in the SoCon Tourney it would have kept Samford out of the NCAAs. If Samford had beaten Purdue it likely would not only have made the Bulldogs a sure bet to make the NCAAs even with a SoCon Tournament loss but would have made them a far better seed. Same Old Marky? You state the NIL has weakened mid-major basketball and I would suggest the same- hence why SoCon champ Western Carolina can play top seeded Purdue to a one-point game in '96, but today Samford cannot compete with a top-seeded Boilermakers team. And why are you lecturing me on the appeal of mid-major basketball? I've been promoting ETSU and the SoCon for years. When the other media are celebrating high schools or the Vols- who always leads with ETSU? Why do you think I make videos on them? You seem to suggest I should just ignore facts- the demise of the league- and just say it's as good as it ever was. That's dishonesty. I'd like to get back to the level the league was at before.

@PittsburghMarky ETSU is a perpetually mediocre program. They'll never be good. The single successful year since restarting was a fluke. They lost to Maryville College, a division 3 school, this decade! Hard to recruit kids to Johnson City. Terrible place! This is an awful video and your football knowledge is zero 😂

Quarles is an excellent high school coach as by his achievements and seeing how bad maryville has been since he left....However, he was horrible in his short stint at college coaching, going 6-16 and I don't believe he even beat a d1 team.

@@stephenmillertime Maryville won two state titles after he left. He never produced an NFL player at Maryville. Any positives about Quarles' reputation is based on beating up on teenagers and Maryville's developmental system as well as the favors one receives by being thought of as "one of us" in insular east Tennessee. ETSU lost 24-6 to Mercer this year. Lamb's Gardner-Webb's Bulldogs put up seven in their playoff game against the Bears. And now I have a question for you- what do you call the diploma of a PhD from Kentucky?

You write as if I'm the only person who would like ETSU to have a new HC. Show me the ETSU fan who thinks Quarles is doing a good job. Show me the objective bystander who would suggest a coach that inherits an 11-2 team and then promptly goes 4-10 with it- and with significant talent returning from the 11-2 team- is doing a good job. And then you damn the entity he currently coaches in because of the power it now gives the player (NIL and transfers) that by and large high school, where the coach is God, does not. I can understand why he would be popular in Maryville. But the Scots won two state titles without him. You can lament Maryville has a 4-2 record, but that's only shabby by comparing them to what the Scots did 20 years ago and in 4A, not 6A that they currently play in. It seems Oakland has surpassed Maryville in the TSSAA pecking order these days, but that started when Quarles was still in Maryville. more proof that Quarles peaked in mid-level high school football. Laid back and Aw Shucks probably wins a lot of friends in east Tennessee, but it isn't winning D-1 college football games.

@@PittsburghMarky You carry on like ETSU was a winning program for many years and Sanders left him with everyone returning but that's not the case. A bunch jumped ship when he came on board. Personally I have never been interested in that division of college football and most of those teams can only survive due to donations and playing one of the D1 schools for a big fat check to be thrown to the lions. ETSU scrapped football for 11 seasons and you don't see winning program do that.

Will Huzzie. 10 players picked All SoCon preseason, 14 returning starters (7 on each side of the ball). Picked No 11 preseason in the country. Second in the conference. The truth is ETSU lost only three players to the portal prior to Quarles first season. Coming off a conference title, second in four years. Coming off an Elite Eight appearance in the FCS playoffs. The year before 11-2, they were 5-2 and were the only team to beat the conference champ in the regular season. The fact ETSU had a losing season in 2019, or didn't have football for 12 years, has nothing to do with the regression of football or the fact Coach "One of the Worst Things that can happen to your team is to have first and goal at the 8" is now 2-11 against D-1 competition and those two victories were against teams that finished 0-11 and 1-10. George Quarles is the worst coach in college football today, bar none. The fact he did well with a 4A high school team in Bumf_ck 20 years ago doesn't change that. He comes off as clueless and has the appearance of inbreeding. There is simply nothing you can defend Quarles over. Frankly, his record in Little League is irrelevant and he was never qualified for the job.

I know a lot of these smaller schools play the big boy's to get a million dollar check to help fund the program. I do appreciate your insight and your views on your videos. FYI on Maryville High Football the program could possibly see it's first losing season since 1961 and the lid is about to blow off and everyone wants him back. When ETSU plays and loses everyone in town are texting each other hoping the stars will align and he is released and the staff resigns at Maryville.opening the doors for him to come back home.

@@JimWhite1958 He signed a 5-year contract at $225K a year. Generally speaking if you have a coach with less than four years left on his contract at this level you're doomed. You can't promise your recruits you'll be there for the duration of their careers. While ETSU has, at times, given their coaches less than four years to work with on their contracts for a wide variety of reasons, I've been told but cannot confirm Quarles' buyout is believed to be $400K. There are a variety of things that can happen here. I can't imagine they'd extend his contract, so that can lead to the coach resigning and a settlement is made as he looks for work elsewhere. Then again, Quarles is such a high school coach in a college game (his postgame quotes after the loss to Samford spoke of how hard ETSU played- real schoolboy stuff) I wouldn't be surprised if he tried coaching with three years left on his contract. Still, the current AD has made some "read-between-the-lines" comments about reviewing the coaching situations after the season and frankly, the AD is a 77-year-old man who was brought back to hire new coaches.

George Quarles does not know more In one of his fingernails than I do in my entire body. That is self evident due to the fact that I am more articulate in my videos then he is in his press conferences. I also am not an East Tennessee hillbilly. ETSU returned a record-setting quarterback, a running back who was 1000 yard rusher that was invited the Bengals camp, a pretty good receiver in Will Huzzie and more. More than enough to go more than 3-8 after an 11-2 mark the year before. If they’re clamoring for him in Maryville, that tells me all I need to know about Maryville. It ain’t exactly the big leagues. It’s high school. George Quarles does fine with teenagers. With men, less so.

Do you honestly believe ETSU is the big leagues. In all my life I have never had anyone ask me what the score was on the ETSU game. A lot of difference in Cincinnati Moeller a private school and Maryville High a city school. Anyways keep up the good work and maybe you'll convince GQ to come back home.

@@jimwhite9661 ETSU is Division One. We can argue if that’s the “big leagues,” certainly it is more for basketball than football. But I know this; not a high school anywhere they can be called the big leagues. Also, you just made the argument why Quarrels shouldn’t coach college. Public school and the two state titles won without him show Maryville’s success is more a product of player development in youth ranks. He didn’t recruit. A private high school does.

Lived in the area for years. Have had many relations with coaches there including current. Working in the athletic department is hardly a prerequisite for commenting and frankly this comment brings my biggest criticism of East Tennessee media to light, that it is more about being a fanboy than a journalist. You have no numbers regarding readership of Wilmoth or Fritz but these are high school reporters. And frankly, if they do have more of a following than I do (debatable), then it speaks of a disturbing element of local fandom that would rather read less-than-insightful pieces about high school athletics than follow the only remotely big league team in town. You may now respond not by picking apart the points made in this piece but rather by attempting to shoot the messenger. Which is soooooooo East Tennessee.

They've so far retired one number and put it back in circulation for a JUCO transfer. When Mister Jennings's number is given to a scrub walk-on something is wrong. And retiring a legend's number isn't political correctness giving a participation trophy, giving it to a scrub is. Honoring Tim Smith before Zakee Wadood, Jerald Fields, or Ben Rhoda is also not political correctness; it's not knowing anything about your history.

I wondered if a motivation for hiring Oliver if the three players he was going to bring to ETSU would instead come to USF. And if that is the case, wouldn't that be an argument for the SoCon being equal on a competitive level with the American?

The thing is, I’m not sure how much longer Richard Sander will be the AD. You could tell that they were keeping him on so that he could hire another basketball coach. What now? Are they holding the sword of Damocles over Quarles? Sander has never hired a football coach.
