Looks like it takes more effort and a good pair of walking shoes compared to a razor sharp block plane? Those indexable carbide cutters you use are not sharp, but are adequate on machine tools with lots of power. Check out endmills ground from micrograin carbide blanks, they are super sharp.

This is clearly the Achilles heel of this plane. It's hugely awkward and time wasting based on the design. Really frustrating.

Thanks for the inspiration. After watching this video a few months ago, I was super charged to complete my first one-piece using my Morgan Hand Mill and the extension bed I purchased many years ago. Mine is a 7.5 foot , 4-weight, hollow-build rod, which is based on a modified Payne 100 taper. Total weight of the finished rod is 3.1 oz!!! The end result is a rod cast like a dream. Smooth is a good word to describe the action; it's easily the smoothest rod I've ever cast! Everyone who casts it, can't put it down! Along with everything mentioned in the video, I'm truly amazed at the feel translated through a bamboo rod without a metal ferrule. Fantastic rod for fishing soft hackles! Already working on my next one-piece...an 8-footer! Thanks, guys. Joel
