    I just picked up a FREE Flame King from the local County office that is trying to encourage a reduction in the use of disposable cylinders/tanks, yeah its Califiornia. So, I maybe a bit prejudiced. What I think I saw from this video is that on the refill device for the Flame King the "so hard to see "black" plastic alignment" pin can be removed entirely from the refill device thus negating any difficulty in seeing it or paying any attention to alignment besides locating the Allen hole to the front so it can be easily accessed. The groove in the valve is a milling area to allow an over pressure valve installation. At least that is what I can see so far in my exploration of this full and new to me tank. The Fuel Keg appears to have the over pressure valve in the tank itself and not part of the valve. From reading the comments here I interpret the pin on the Fuel Keg refill apparatus provides some physical function of disabling the valve with the key ring. The video was shaky and not detailed enough for me to make an absolute determination. It would be easy for the presenter to turn that valve while the full tank is not attached to see if any propane is expended. I do my own refills of the disposable tanks and use no stand what-so-ever, just turn over the 20lb tank on any flat surface - they stand up fine just by themselves, but I am careful. This works just fine with no stand; however, I do like the compactness of the Fuel Keg stand but see no reason for a stand at all. The Flame King stand is just way too bulky for my consideration. I will not be getting any of the two kits, only the Flame King refill adapter which I find to not be necessary as I already can refill the disposable tanks but will do so as I think it will be easier to refill multiple Flame King tanks (or the disposable tanks) at the same time. I also have 2MM and 5/64" Allen wrenches in a "T" handle configuration - so that is a very non-issue to me. I already use Brass caps so that is a non-issue too.

I too was experiencing start up wattage much less than the formulas (amps x volts) and I didn't understand that "the math" is not always the real result. It was frustrating not knowing. At one point I gave up and just ran fans and lights and then just before the power returned a portable a/c unit that was loaned to me. Great video that gave me better context for my next experience. • @macmcleod1188

    The real answer is that you need both. Batteries save you *during the disaster* but are much more expensive *after* the disaster. I know, I've used them that way twice this year now. Remember to check you air filter on your generator and to change the oil per the schedule. I add oil and change the oil once a week because I just can't maintain an every 4 day oil change. I realize I'm shortening the life of my generator with this practice. For solar, have an extra. For generator, when you can get a smaller, cheap backup generator. Propane is better than gasoline unless you are the type of person who will do all the proper gasoline maintenance even when you are physically and mentally exhausted.

    • @macmcleod1188
      @macmcleod1188 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      And I meant, "for gas... when you can (are able to) ... buy an inexpensive small backup generator. It must have the carburetor clearing feature and/or you must burn out every drop of gasoline in the backup generator before storing it. It's only to use when your main generator suddenly doesn't work. Propane can be warmed by the exhaust flow in cold weather.

      Modern Batteries have over 3,000 charge cycles. And that's full charge cycles. You'll get a lot more if you keep it between 20% and 80%. And keep it from getting too hot. The range is 3,000 cycles (9 years daily use) to 5,000 cycles (14 years daily use). If you don't use it daily, it will last longer. At *some* point, the age of the device matters (just like cars) as much as the cycles tho. But they are getting less expensive. Some 2000w models have dropped from $1200 to $750 on prime day. I have two of these, Companion and standard, and I store 20 gallons of non-ethanol gas specifically for emergency generator use. Every six months I simply dump it in my 4Runner, then go get fresh gas. Not a hardship at all, and I get the level of performance the Honda engineers designed these generators to provide. Remember, these are designed to run on gasoline, not propane, even though they will.

    The explosion/fire would have been much quicker with a vented Fuel Keg! The Fuel Keg is far superior for refilling, but the rupture was caused by combustion from using a flammable gas in an enclosed space, the results would have been the same either way.

  • @macmcleod1188

    You can set up a dual tank regulator and your generator will run about 26 to 28 hours on the two tanks. I like the fact that propane stores indefinitely while gasoline you would have to compete with everyone right before the crisis and then somehow use up the gasoline after the crisis.

  • @davied5496
    @davied5496 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I disagree with you is in one respect the propane tanks only last a very short time it may be good to get you up and go in when you need it and then if you can go get you some gasoline and then start running it on gas, but yeah, it sucks down the propane, but I use it on my system

  • @LarryBinFL
    @LarryBinFL หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nah....your reasons about propane over gasoline are weak. Gasoline goes stale? Yes, but with additives it certainly is NOT in just one year, and you can easily dump it into your car and refill the cans. If you are going to say "and I can use propane in my grill", then you could also say "I can use gasoline in my car", which in an emergency might be a waaay better thing! And if decades of experience in Florida hurricanes indicates anything, you can find gasoline a whole lot easier in an emergency. LP has an energy density of 3/4 of gasoline, yet costs more than gasoline, making it a poor value.... and then you are now storing a pressurized gas, upping the odds of a leak. Are there advantages? Sure. But not as rosy as you outlined them.

    • @sonar610
      @sonar610 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Additives don't do much. My suggestion is ethanol free gas in a container that doesn't leak. No spill cans are great for small batches of mix, but if you're using 5 gallon cans it's better to switch to Justrite or Eagle safety cans. Even if you don't do both, your storage longevity increases. During an emergency running fuel with ethanol is fine - just make sure you use it all and don't store it.

    • @macmcleod1188
      @macmcleod1188 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't have to use propane in your grill. That's the point. It stays good indefinitely compared to gasoline. The new technology which burns all the gasoline in the carburetor does help with generator maintenance however.

    i have done similar with the grenergy propane kit on my eu3000is...install was straight forward if a bit tricky due to the tight space inside the generator itself,but it works perfectly on propane or gas..my main reason for having the generator is possible power outages during hurricane season,so it doesn't get used a lot,and i don't often keep a lot of gas on hand for it,usually i keep just enough gas for the lawnmower or snowblower and only buy what i can reasonably expect to use in the next month or three...i think saying even a year long lifespan for gas these days is pretty optimistic for small engines,after even 6 months its noticeably losing potency in my experience...but i keep a full 30lb tank of propane on hand if i need the generator,its always there and i don't need to worry about it going bad or standing in line to get fuel the day before a storm,or what to do with fuel i did buy should i end up not needing it at all...best estimates with a 30lb tank,is that its probably more than a full day's worth of fuel for my needs,plus whatever is in the bbq tank at the time and whatever gas happens to be on hand as well...if the world hasn't righted itself by then,it at least gives me time i can relax and figure out where to go to get more...time for stores to reopen etc

    Yeah, propane is definitely the way to go. I ran our house for 2 1/2 days last winter with 12 degree outdoor temps. I keep two 30 lb. trailer tanks around and that was plenty of propane. The other benefit of propane is almost no CO emissions--just that from burnt oil on the cylinder walls which would be minimal for a newer generator. Don't try this at home, but for kicks I ran my generator for 30 minutes in a closed garage with a CO detector and it registered no CO.

    I have a chinese copy of the 1000W Honda generator. After 8 years the only time it failed was due a dirty spark plug. That is something what you never have when run on LPG.

      spark plugs are consumables or wear items. not replacing spark plugs is not proper maintenance

    8mm wrench socket? Wtf? US giving in to this pesky metrical system? Why not use the traditional imperial 3/6 of walrus penises (in cold water of Alaska at spring time)? It’s so much better…

    I suppose the instructions advise to drain or run the carburetor dry before turning on the propane feed?

    I bought a 5300 (6600 peak) watt portable generator because I figured bigger is better. I live in the country and you can hear it form a quarter mile away. To be honest, it's more power than necessary to power your electronics, deep freezers, etc. but not enough to power your major appliances safely. So, I would recommend a Honda inverter generator for personal preparedness. We have 3 deep freezers so I am getting one Honda generator for those and probably buy a cheaper harbor freight model for everything else.
