How many are monitoring mercury releases due to the forest fires? Canada has done some research. Mercury levels increase in watersheds and increase significantly more in fish because of the significant release of nitrogen and phosphorus in addition to the mercury. Many of the areas that are burning have soils high in mercury. Vegetation that is burning has had mercury from China accumulating on it. The Forest Service releases more mercury in Idaho than industry does.
