Building a Sauna step-by-step

During my Sauna build I couln't really find good instructions and tips, so I'll try to explain few details I learned along the way. Hope this will be useful for you. great work!
Make sure to pull lead from spark plug as it could start whilst undoing the nuts for the blades. While lifting make sure the carburetor is facing sky wards.
Mmmm, even though it is generally sound safety advice. When you turn the key to the "OFF" position, that cuts power to the sparkplugs as well, so I don't see how you could start the engine unless you would leave the key in the idle position, no?
Has happened by given enough spin on the blade the mower will start.
@@noellawlor6838 In diesel engine sure. But in petrol engine how will the engine run, when the key cuts power to the spark plug? Isn't turning the key to OFF same as pulling the cord off the plug?
@ I did a course on lawnmowers before and that was they told us to do when servicing.
@@noellawlor6838 well I guess it's best practice, so you don't forget about the key, or if you encounter a machine, where someone has disabled the key mechanism.
I think I would put a block of wood under jack for safety. Great video, thanks
Hi, thank you for a great video! Makes us almost brave enough to build one ourselves 🙈 what was the estimated total cost?
Awesome video. Most common sense build on TH-cam. Thank you.
My dilemma is the following: the place where I'm building the sauna has dimensions of 2,5m x 2,00 m x 2,5m (W:L:H), which gives a total of 12,5 square meters. Since I have a single phase electric system, the maximum I could probably go for the electric heater is 6kW. Most websites claim that a 6kW heater is good for up to 8-9 sq.m. I could also go for a more powerful heater (8kW or 9kW), but then I'll have to install a three phase system and that costs more than 500 EUR, so I wonder if it's worth it. In the end, with a 6kW it will just take a little longer to heat up the place, but it should be OK, right? I'll make sure to apply at least 5cm of insulation on every wall plus the ceiling. What is your personal opinion about this, Marek? I'm curios to hear. Thank you in advance!
@@gablan1468 If you can run 6kW on single phase (is this dedicated cable only for this and thick enough? 6 kW for single phase seems on the higher limit for normal wiring at home), than the only downside is heat up time. If you have the sauna outside, so it starts at some minus celsius, that also adds some start up time (opposite of having the sauna inside the house). My guess is you could be looking at something like 70-80mins, 0°C to 80°C, while using the 6kW (it's a wild guess though). All that said €500 isn't all that much money, considering the other costs and having the thing ready quickly ready when your wife or friends suggest "let's go to sauna" is pretty nice feature.
You can also simply put your everyday carbon waste such as tissues, cardboard packaging, etc., without restraint, for the carbon/nitrogen balance, quite simply. Everything that is paper/tissue/etc. is ultimately carbon.
Great video, thank you for the upload. What brand foil did you use, or what temperature is it rated for
Brand is Harvia (Finland). No temperature rating is written on it.
@MarekVacek really great vid. Thanks
Try to fix the title, it's call " Do It Yourself", DIY, you have DYI on the screen...
Yes, a typo. Sadly the title is "burned" into the video and TH-cam doesn't allow for a change of the video file.
What type of floor did you choose and why?
I laid tiles, just because of the water splashing from pouring it over the heater. Other than that it doesn't really matter what you choose.
Robert
je to svetlo takhle dostacujici kdyz je venku tma? jinak moc pekny!
Been watching alot of sauna heater videos and this is so informative 👏🏽 congratulations sir.
Honestly I had to laugh so hard at Minute 12:50, squeezing the 2nd level on top. It just popped up in my mind "....and then you got fresh wormjuice"
Is it rock wool or glass wool? thank you
I used rock wool, but I think that both will work fine. They can both tolerate these temperatures, even though rock wool is less water absorbant and tolerates even higher temperatures.
@@MarekVacek Thank you very much for your answer. Awesome video.
Is there a difference in using kingspan to Rockwool?
Great video, greatings from Iceland.
You telling how to do this better than others video I have seen 😊
Blade bolts should loosen the same direction as the cutting side of the blade.
Great tip!
I would agree. Super detailed video !
How often do you have to swap levels ?
DEpends on amount of stuff you're composting. But expect about a couple months or more.
@@MarekVacek and what about the flies ? Did they come back :) ?
@@konstantinrandom1513 yep, they are a seasonal recuring thing.
@MarekVacek I saw the new model has special cover for upper layer of the compost. May be if you add it, could help. Anyway, thank you for the video, I'm really infected with this idea to have same thing 😁
Good idea with the strap! thanks for posting
Yeah, that would be too sketchy without it. You're down there wrenching on rusty bolts, rocking the whole thing. Idealy the strap should be integral part of the lift, so nobody gets the idea of using it without. But, in true Chinese safety fashion, it comes as this.
@@MarekVacekI’ve got the original German version and that doesn’t come with a strap system either - it’s amazing really.
What is the bin made of? Is it post consumer plastic?
It's made of plastic. It is very high grade plastic though. We have it for 4 years and it looks still good.
Great video! 👍 I have a Stiga Estate lawn tractor too that i need to sharpen the blades on, my lawn tractor are from 2022 but the deck looks the same. Nice thing to know about that the threads are different and that the blades turn in different directions. This video helped me more than i was expecting!
Have you lost the litle keys for the shafts yet? :-D I bought a handfull of those little buggers. I loose at least one with every sharpening.
@@MarekVacek No i hasn't sharped my blades yet. I need to order a lift like this one that you have first become it looks so easy to do it with this lift.
@@BSS22193 Look out for them, once you remove the blades, there are two tiny keys and they love to fall out into grass.
@@MarekVacek Ok thank you! I will look out for them😊 By the way, have you tried to mulch the grass with the knifes you're using on your Stiga in this video?
Thank you - great video and great build
Could I put 1000 Red works to 100 meals worms for better results or is it better to keep them separate?
Hi Marek! I’m about to build my own Sauna on a concrete base in the uk and was wondering how you have managed without a drain. I keep being told I need one and was wondering how it has been for you.
I don't have it and it's fine. Even when pouring water over the heater, it's not that bad. The little water that ends up on the floor will dry out. Don't worry about it.
@@MarekVacek superstar thanks, you’ve just saved me a load of money
Hey Marek, another question if you don’t mind. What kind of and thickness of glass did you order for the window? Not sure what to ask for. Jason, Wales
@@Jason-rk4xc it's double glazed. So two times 4mm if I recall corectly. I order it tempered for safety (if it breaks it will shatter). I had it tinted to same shade as the door, which I bought ready-made.
Wonderful, thanks again Marek
Great video, very instructional! May I ask how long it took for you to build it?
Well, you know it was weekend here and there. I think if you had all the material you could do it in like 5-7 full days, maybe.
HOW. MUCH. LIFT. COST. ..WERE ....WENT ..STORE
That will depend greatly on the country you're buying this from. For UK, you can get it from here for instance www.amazon.co.uk/Velleman-175359-Tractor-Mower-Hoist/dp/B00H83I3B0?&linkCode=sl1&tag=&linkId=94a3cd097f75e0f7bab7e58447752551&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
You skipped the part of installing extra planks to form a grid under the panels. Now there is no ventilation under them.
I wonder how many saunas actually have built it this way. The commercial saunas where I go to 100% don't have it. They don't have a drain nor a ventilation. Yet somehow they've been working for many years.
I have the same box but my worms always escape at night and i have 20+ dead worms in my kitchen.... i have a thick matt come with my box with i put on the bottom of the bottom box and i also had tried putting it on the top, but they still escape every day. Do I have to put a light source to my box or is there something else? Its also not to warm in my apartment. I appreciate any help!
Já to tam sypu i když to minulé ještě není zpracováno. Občas je tam třeba i nějaká plíseň, ale naučil jsem se to moc neřešit a ty žížaly si s tím vždy nějak poradily. Ti bílí broučci se objevují a pak zase mizí, je to prostě jakási sezónní "havěť".
Is that a sauna?
Excellent video!! Simple but effective.👌👌👍👍
Is that really worth the effort ?
To get vermicompost: No. As a hobby: Depends on you.
Thanks for this review Marek, I'm looking at buying this same model for small workshop/hobby use.
This video made me decide not to do worm composting. So much easier with my current Bokashi method.
Awesome Work👍🏻
Hi Marek. Great video. Question about led stripes you used - any specific kind? Waterproof? Covered with silicone? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Soooo, this a bit tricky one to answer: LED strips are designed to run up to about 60°C (140F). On the internet people will argue that they become damaged over 100°C (210F). So, if you go by the manual, they are surely to fail, right? Now, that we have this out of the way I will tell you this: I run a regular RGBW LED strip in a chunky aluminium profile and it's fine (more than 4 years now). I spoke to professional sauna installers and they told me they run basic LED strips in commercial saunas and they are fine as well. The special IP68 or whatever high temp strips are just not worth the hassle or the cost. If the LEDs fail somewhere down the line, it will be cheaper to replace than the special ones.
@@MarekVacek my idea exactly. Thank you.
Hi Marek, perfect work and I hope you are still happy with your sauna? How often do you use it? I have a question about the insulation. Why did you decide to use mineral wool with aluminum foil and not wood fiber insulation? Wouldn't that be a better solution against mold for an outdoor sauna?
Hello, it's been about 4 years and all is well. I don't use it all that often, as it's in my holiday house. Maybe 20-30 times a year. Wood fiber was simply not known to me at the time, so that's why. Around here mineral wool is "the" insulation that everybody uses, so that's what I was told by guys building saunas professionally. I think wood fiber will do you the same service.
Thanks for sharing this! Slainte, DC🍀

This is what I looking for.
I had one of these and within a week it was full of brown mites crawling all over. Not something I want inside my house. How can I control mites?

Record was 11 I think :-D
Parádní práce. Velká inspirace. Moc se mi Vaše video líbilo. Děkuji za to. Jen pro představu, můžete alespoň zhruba nastínit náklady na materiál?

I'm just wondering how your spuce planks have been holding up. I'm looking at building a sauna and want to save some money on the planks.
All good, looks as good as new.
It is not worm tea it is leachate. Leachate is anaerobic and is mostly bad. Real compost tea aerobic is made with finished compost and most require an air pump or some method to get constant air in like mixing with a stick. Compost tea must be used immediately after air flow stops.
Found this: "Worm tea is a light amber liquid that comes from the worm farm, it is aerobic and has been through the gut of healthy worms. Leachate is a dark, sometimes foul smelling liquid that has not been through the gut of healthy worms and so contains bacteria that is not safe." So I guess it would depend of the balance in the worm farm, so it's not rotting food scraps that are causing the liquid?
