**Solved!** Starter relay problem! Works for most bikes/vehicles!

Ive been having starting issues with my 2011 Gsxr 600. After countless nights of researching the problem, I couldn't find the solution! So I ran a few diagnostic tests and found that my relay was bad! I hope this video helps another fellow rider!! This diagnosis can be tested with any vehicle as they all use the same principle. I know this vid is 5 years old, but let me add a comment that might help others please. It may be tempting to not want to spend the $75 for the Suzuki Relay and instead buy a much cheaper one. I bought a cheap one first and it failed in short order. I popped for the Suzuki and it has worked very well. I also cut apart the old Suzuki relay and the cheap aftermarket one and you can see the big difference in quality. The cheap one was cheap in every way. The plastic case is way cheaper. The springs are weaker. And the way they swage the two contacts to the terminal is really inferior. Don't use them. Go with the expensive Suzuki one. Not perfect, but way better. Very interesting how these work. There are actually two springs inside that balance the contact plunger. The open spring is slightly stronger. When the starter button is pushed, it energizes a solenoid coil that then overcomes the open spring allowing the close spring to push the contact button towards the two terminals. Of course there is a healthy dose of current that needs to go to the starter and eventually this causes pitting in the contacts. Over time this can cause "insulation" and enough current won't flow. This is when you will need to replace the relay.

      @@deanbradley6887 couldn’t agree more. Crazy how common this problem is and is usually overlooked. I’d rather pay sub $100 for a relay than a stator/rec fix! Thanks for the helpful info and hope we can continue to help other riders!

    I have a 2011 zx10r. Same issue as you. Couldn't start the bike the way you did though. Ran the volt meter like you, all same. You still think i should replace the relay or could it soemthing else since all i did was cause spark trying to start like you did (by bridging the 2 with a screw driver)

    • @MotoCos88
      @MotoCos88 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@felipeandrade7031 I’d start with the battery always. If it’s not pumping 12.5+V when cranking, or trying to start it, get a new battery. Then if it doesn’t work still, go to the relay. Over time, the relays internal contacts or the spring gets bogged. Bypassing via the contacts on the relay should initiate the starter motor. If it’s just clicking, it’s the battery. If it’s cranking but not turning over, it’s the starter motor. If you get just one click, it’s the relay. Hope that helps

    Man, i am running through the same issue myself, i fix computers but I don't do much of electronics, still, my logic was telling me that if i bridge the connectors and get a spark all the time, it meant that the Relay wasn't working well, my mechanic told me that the problem was the cord, I don't think i can trust him for anything more than basic stuff, i thought it was the relay, and I'm gonna order one right now.

    • @MotoCos88
      @MotoCos88 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      if you bridge the relay, and get a spark, that means the cords are fine, its transfering voltage. If you bridge them, get a spark, AND the bike starts, that's a seized relay. If you bridge them, get a spark, and its tries to crank, but all you get are clicks, its the battery (not enough voltage). Lastly, if you bridge them, gets a spark, tries to crank, but doesn't turn over, that's the starter motor lol. This was a hard diagnose, as it took me 3 years to figure it out. He may not be a bad mechanic but there's a lot that goes into motors and I'm no mechanic, I just took my time and looked over a bunch of schematics of how an engine starts! I hope this video helped and gets you back out there! Stay safe!

      @MotoCos88 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      what happens when you bridge it? are you getting clicks, or is the starter trying to crank? If no clicks or anything happens when you bridge the two, I would assume it's the battery. It needs 12.5V+ to fully turn over. I'd check with a volt meter what's going on with your battery when you're trying to start it. Voltage will drop from standing to trying to start the vehicle and can drop down a whole volt.

The starter relay was making the click and the fuse was fine on it and so I thought it had to be the starter motor because it looked a little cooked. And after buying a new one and installing it, it still wasn't cranking. After watching your video I ran down stairs and in to the garage to give it a try and sure enough she cranked. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us.
