Famous Last Words
Fables are such problems. The norms they reflect or are in conversation with, depending on the time and place, are a problem. They can depict situations, depending on the circumstances, that are gruesome. They can take the quotidian to the ridiculous or terrifying, creating a world that doesn’t exist seem possible, or can’t be possible, or be possibly enviable. Or unenviable. Fables typically operate across age groups and can last for generations. The best ones have nested messages. The meanings of those messages, filled with signs and clues, are puzzles to be solved either very slowly or in a matter of moments. Stone’s fables, written specifically for this piece, are sophisticated, gem-like gentle games. They feel mythic, as if they’ve been told for generations. All the problems they offer us to consider seem familiar. It’s the solutions (or lack thereof) that they reveal that make us confront the real problems.

Genevieve Feiwen Lee plays Gao Ping's "Daydreams"
มุมมอง 522 หลายเดือนก่อน
The six-movement piano suite Daydreams was written in February and March of 2019. It was commissioned by Professor Jack Richards for the young pianist Tony Lin, who gave the world premiere in September of the same year. These pieces germinate from small and simple daily things, a bit like a musical diary. The everyday happenings, though ordinary and unimportant, nevertheless form the basic colo...
Genevieve Feiwen Lee plays Livia Malossi Bottignole's "Retaggio"
มุมมอง 582 หลายเดือนก่อน
Retaggio came into being somewhat by chance. Looking for a suitable text for the composition, one that held personal relevance, I began delving into new books and topics only to find myself drawn to ancient paths. Exploring both familiar and unfamiliar texts, this journey crossed the works of Lara Cardella, Simone de Beauvoir, and a young Italian poet, Anna Donà. While these three authors diffe...
Genevieve Feiwen Lee plays Chris Castro's "Á la tienne!"
มุมมอง 1052 หลายเดือนก่อน
Á la tienne! is a celebratory work, structured as a toast during a wedding ceremony. The text is a poem Guillaume Apollinaire composed for his friend André Salmon’s wedding. The work alternates two musical ideas. Long musical phrases, utilizing old church modes, stay grounded in the bass register of the piano and form the heart of the piece. Surrounding this center are light, fanfare figures re...

Shaoai Ashley Zhang plays Fernanda Aoki Navarro "Still and still"
มุมมอง 862 หลายเดือนก่อน
Fernanda Aoki Navarro is a composer of acoustic and electroacoustic music, developing concert music, intermedia works, performance art and installations. She is interested in sound, in the idiosyncratic relationship between the corporeality of the performers and the physicality of their instruments, in the exploration between music and language, the use and misuse of technology, and in the tran...
Shaoai Ashley Zhang plays Luciano Berio's "Sequenza IV"

Thank you for bringing this wonderful piece to light. What I most admire about Walker is his refusal to adhere to any particular "school" or style of musical composition. He wrote whatever suited him, drawing from many sources and making them all his own. He is truly an American master.

Absolutely brilliant. The repeating right hand is controlled so beautifully in dynamic and in steady rhythm. It is as buttery legato as it needs to be to create that dream state. Not easy at all. That is an absolutely exhausting thing to do for that length of time. The potential for tension build up and you have none. Impressive. One of my favorite pieces as well.

My introduction to Gerald's playing was his 2007 Paris performance with Roy Hargrove of his marvellous composition Strasbourg/St Denis, in my view 12 minutes of some of the best jazz ever recorded, and the Clayton contribution is stunningly brilliant.

The performance is terrific, and I really enjoy the piece. I'm sorry to have heard about Dr. Lesemann. He was my composition professor at USC in 1977-78, and was a fabulous teacher, largely because he would easily get through what you were up to in a given piece, and tell you right out what needed to be done! For one vocal piece, he said, no, what you really need here is some traveling music, which dumbly I hadn't even thought of! His approach was honest and direct, and he was knowledgeable to the point where he would immediately and almost nonchalantly understand a given situation musically. Anyway, he had a somewhat dry humor, and was a wonderful person, and my condolences to any of his family who might see this. I'm going to listen to more of his excellent music!
