Lonesome Fridays 2024 #5 - You Don't Know Me
For this week's Lonesome Fridays I bring you one of the greatest songs to ever come out of the state of Texas, which is really saying something. Cindy Walker wrote You Don't Know Me off of a prompt from Eddy Arnold (there's a great video on YT of her telling this story, while wearing fancy silk gloves!). Ray Charles had a hit with it, on one of his Country & Western albums. My version utilizes the low-tuned Galiano guitar for extra growl. Enjoy!

Lonesome Fridays 2024 #4: That Lonesome Old Song
มุมมอง 364วันที่ผ่านมา
For this week's Lonesome Fridays I'm dusting off a Ralph Stanley gem that straightforwardly fits the bill based on its alone: That Lonesome Old Song (In the days of iTunes I used to joke that if you searched the word "lonesome" in my library, it didn't narrow things down much!). Ralph recorded this one circa 1972 with lead singer Roy Lee Centers, who he said had a voice more like his late broth...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #3: The Pain of Loving You
มุมมอง 37114 วันที่ผ่านมา
There are few things that most of us can agree upon these days, but one of them has got to be the awesomeness of Dolly Parton. So for this week's Lonesome Fridays I bring you a Dolly classic, The Pain of Loving You. I don't think this was ever intended as a patriotic song but this week I'm sending it out to those are grieving the country we love, for aligning with a message of doing harm to to ...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #2: Look What Thoughts Will Do
มุมมอง 36321 วันที่ผ่านมา
For this week's Lonesome Fridays I'm going back to a Lefty Frizzell classic that I have played in many a solo set. It's got sort of a wailing guitar part that wonders what Bill Monroe might have sounded like on a lap steel. Anyhow, Lefty is the best and I once got to play his famous Gibson J-200 guitar, with his name emblazoned on the pickguard and a custom Bigsby neck. It's the guitar that hel...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #1: Prisoner's Song
มุมมอง 353หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome back to Lonesome Fridays, where I share a song each week for the last 10 weeks of the year. They'll all go on a playlist where you can string them together to form a more-or-less coherent solo set. I'm kicking things off with The Prisoner's Song, first recorded and released in 1924 (100 years ago!) by Vernon Dalhart. It had the distinction of being the first million-selling country song...
Dark Hollow - Clarence White with Muleskinner Class Announcement
มุมมอง 493หลายเดือนก่อน
I’m very excited to be offering a new Zoom course on the guitar style of my hero, Clarence White. It’ll be a deep dive into his playing on the 1973 Muleskinner recordings - both the live TV performance and the studio album. This was one of the last recordings Clarence made before he died tragically in June 1973. His playing is remarkable as he drew inspiration from his Muleskinner bandmates and...

Here’s The Golden Rocket, a song that will be on our upcoming Jim & Jesse tribute album (written by Hank Snow). @jhdjolliff and I are getting ready for a concert this Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8 in Brooklyn, in the same 19th Century church hall where we tracked the record. It’s a special space and we hope you’ll join us there if you are in the area. 2pm, @OldFirstBrooklyn #bluegrassharmony at...

Got together with Billy Strings as part of a monthly series on Doc Watson songs I’ve been doing for my school of bluegrass vocals on ArtistWorks. The whole discussion was a half hour long and includes three songs. Here’s an excerpt, an old shape note hymn that Doc recorded, And Am I Born to Die (aka Idumea). Billy’s been singing it solo a capella from time to time but I learned a chilling duet ...

Happy 4th of July, and also happy 82nd birthday to the great Peter Rowan! Here’s his song Mississippi Moon, which he recorded with Seatrain in 1971 with Richard Greene on fiddle. It’s a real sleeper, and should become a standard. Glad to hear Peter singing it some as of late! I’m psyched for two ostensibly solo shows next week, where I’ll likely pull this one out. On Wednesday, July 10 I’ve got...

Lonesome Fridays 2023 #10 - Sunny Side of the Mountain
มุมมอง 1.7K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm bringing Lonesome Fridays 2023 to a close with Sunny Side of the Mountain, a classic most associated with the (self-proclaimed) King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin, who named his band The Sunny Mountain Boys after it. The original recording was from 1946 by Hank, the Singing Ranger, later known as Hank Snow, and it was also a staple of Bill Monroe's repertoire. I've only ever performed this son...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #9 - Hickory Wind
มุมมอง 1.6K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here's' Hickory Wind, a cosmic country classic credited to Gram Parsons, though some attribute its authorship to South Carolina folksinger Sylvia Sammons. Regardless of who wrote it, it's a killer song that is forever associated with Parsons' mythology due to his unauthorized performance of it on the Grand Ole Opry (instead of the Merle Haggard song that had been approved by the powers that be)...

มุมมอง 1.9K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
I love this Norman Blake classic because it's a great song and is set in my beloved North Georgia hills of home. But also because it's sort of a blank slate in terms of guitar breaks. Norman, perhaps the greatest solo flatpicker of all time, for some reason doesn't take a guitar break on his original recording. So we just have to imagine what he would have played. I'm not exactly working in Nor...

    Hey Michael, Interesting the mellowish kinda bluesy 70's sound you gave to this one. It was more contemporary sounding to me, complex and beautifully crafted. I was wondering if you might sometime play that electric mandolin you've got there behind you? Your guitar sounded great, as ever. Maybe that was a viola, on the wall, but it looked something like a Breedlove mandolin. I'm learning the mandolin, myself, and I'm pretty obsessed with the sound of it. There aren't as many mandolin artists as guitarists, that I've found recorded with Adirondack-tradition, mountain-style music and folk ballads, and the like; so I've been listening to Mississipi John Hurt for that picking that's like a train wheel going round; and Elmore James, for his wonderful slide guitar,... to hear the sounds I like. Your voice often sounds to me like a mandolin made into a man; especially when you do the Adirondack-high mountain style of singing with the breaks in your voice and yodelish sounds. That's my favorite of your vocal stylings. I hope you'll treat us with some mando, if you get the yen....

  • @SaraLichfield
    @SaraLichfield 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yeee haw. This one makes the floor bounce, and invites one to get to some dancin', against one's will! Expertly and authentically played and sung!... I'm glad you had the daisy shirt to keep things light. That was some serious mountain, dancing grief! It sounded like the protagonist must've been moving on alright, though, because everyone around him would've had to be dancing and swinging their gals around the room, if he could play like you play and sing!

  • @SaraLichfield
    @SaraLichfield 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Oooooh eeee. I want to dance a jig around a campfire and kick up my heels to this. You caught the bouncy fun of it, as well as the fascinating, technically surprising changes. Masterful, as usual. Thank you for taking the time, Michael. I hope you record absolutely everything you enjoy and learn to play. There's no one else who brings your decisiveness and responsiveness to these festivals of musicality! It's great to see you enjoy it, too. The house is coming down over that performance. Super fast, but still so melodically coherent and nuanced!

  • @SaraLichfield
    @SaraLichfield 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thank you so much for carefully curating these arrangements for your Lonesome Fridays' sets. You play everything with such an astonishingly confident attack, I always feel that you've written it yourself and feel every bit of the meaning of it, with no apologies. Somehow, even with that signature strength in your approach, the plaintive sweetness always comes through. What a treat.

  • @SaraLichfield

    That was fun to hear you play that guitar (not the vintage plywood one with the nice scratchy ring", with this lonesome sounding song. Nice ironies in the lyrics. I just love to hear your voice. There's no one else that can touch you with this distinctly American sound.

  • @SaraLichfield
    @SaraLichfield 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Ferocious! Your voice and intonation is a dynamic living piece of American history. Michael, you are a treasure! I'm learning mandolin and love to watch your performances for inspiration, because your voice seems like what my mandolins would sound like, if they came to life and could sing to me, without the limitation of my capacity to use their strings....
