As a Christian of over 60 years....in cutting edge Christian communities....and 40 years in international Christian publishing...I find myself asking more and more questions about church culture. We all know of meetings like this up and down the country....And this looks like a better (top end) example of Christian culture. But i cant help feeling that despite its many fine qualities....It still represents a broader culture that is in crisis. Closing churches - remind me of Closing shops and the retail culture.. All the big department stores are closing...Many high streets have empty shops... Retail is under great strain....but is adapting and changing, finding new ways of functioning. But sadly the church is mostly resistant to change...and fails to understand why it is failing. But I have hope....Seems to me that the Church must and will change...and these challenging times are the shaking catalyst that is required. GOD CAN AND WILL re-format his people. He has done it many times. The way we do church will need to be surrendered to God...and for many that are more C of E or Methodist ...or more denominational than CHRISTIAN...They will not change...They will whither. I'm not clear as to how we need to do church in these strange times...But I have some vision. As we know the basics never change. Where Christians meet God is there with us...We need relationship....connection. How can we build on these basic requirements? Perhaps we might look back to Jesus to see how he did church...perhaps we need to listen to the Holy Spirit...and follow our hearts. Too many of us have become institutionalized...Too many of us continue to compromise and conform to the denominational templates. These templates are like old wine skins...no longer fit for purpose. I therefore encourage us (Christians) to take stock...take courage...and reach out to God for liberation....Only the truth sets us free. This is not meant to be an attack on Upton Vale Baptist Church....But perhaps an encouragement to think radical....think outside of the box...Think how can we adapt as communities in a fast changing world. God bless you all in the Vale Torquay...may you be brave....wise and may you FLOURISH.
