146 on test runs - 30th March 2024
Test running with the locos and railcars continues at Downpatrick and County Down Railway. Saturday 30th March saw 146's turn at last, and it can be safely said that the drivers had some fun, all in the name of serious work of course.
146 was coupled up to the DBSO, 450 class railcar, driving trailer 749 and power car 90. Doing all the maths with that, it's the equivalent of about 8 or 9 carriages, when you consider the weight of the power cars and the extra weight in a DBSO. Add to that the use of light brakes on the 80 class to provide a little drag, and the result is this racket. Wonderful. 146 certainly got a good clear out.
All is going well with the loco, despite what armchair geniuses might claim!

Downpatrick January Diesel Gala 2023

On Saturday 7th January 2023, Downpatrick & County Down Railway held their first ever winter diesel gala. This featured ITG locomotived 146, A39R and G617, along with the DCDR's ex-NIR 450 class railcar 458. Added extras in the form of brake van rides and lineside runpasts made it a load of fun, with much thrash.

146 was in action during a day of shunting o 22nd October, and after everything else was put away we used the loco to carry out the annual running brake test with the running set of carriages. After a long and miserable winter, the ITG's Carrick-on-Suir volunteers were back on Saturday 17th April to give 226 the once over and put the loco through some tests. All went well, as you can see and hear in this video.
G617 startup and shunting - 20th September 2020

A short 4K video showing G617 being started up at Downpatrick on Sunday 20th September, then carrying out a brief shunt to get 80 class railcar set 90 752 down to the shed for battery charging. The first move sees the G class shunt A39R onto the plough brake van in the Cathedral Siding, then drop these down the yard out of the way, before heading back to move the 80 class.

One of the big surprises for visitors to our gala event on Saturday 12th October 2019 was the pairing of 146 and C231 working in multiple - this sort of pairing hasn't happened for many decades! The video shows C231 in action solo, as well as some thrash cam shots of the double header.

In preparation for our gala event on Saturday 12th October 2019, we took the precaution of starting up all the locos the day before and make sure the batteries were good and test them to make sure there were no issues. Five power units, each of them started first time, even the G class. OK, so the 80 isn't really a normal loco, but we like the noise it makes. Turn your speakers up and enjoy.

On Saturday 13th October 2018, C Class loco No. 226 was moved under her own power for the first time in 34 years. There's still a fair bit of work to do, including all the cosmetic aspects, but this is a huge step in the restoration of this locomotive. Is the engine in this the same as the engine in the Class 141/181 ?
Not quite, this is a GM 12-645E (1325 hp) engine, the 141s will have an 8 cylinder version, either 567CR (950hp) or 8-B645E (1100hp).
She looks and sounds great! Well done ITG and DCDR!

Speaking as one of the drivers… what’s wrong with how it sounds? It sounds like a 567 engine under load, with possibly some background noise and clipping from the microphone….

Well done everyone A39r looking pristine . There must have some heat in the motors after 15 minutes as notch 1 generates quite amount of power. There was not as much pre 1980s when the old load regulators were in them which I preferred. It's great to hear it in action again.👍👍

@@CameronSurnamowell I have seen them over the years and really it’s not that bad just needs a bit of care because one group of people destroyed a train there
@@brickbehindthescreen Im actually not sure where C227 is even though I’ve been looking for it for weeks, they seem to have it hidden to avoid further damage. The locomotive is completely empty on the inside, all the moving parts are gone and the ceiling is rotten, I think the ITG are meant to be taking the bogies off of it and I have no idea what will happen to it after. It’s been stored in an unsecure and corrosive environment for years, it’s a pity as it’s original line of Cahersiveen is where I live and it would be great to see it restored.

Driver on A39r ex Inch Abbey looks familiar , traveled back from inch Abbey with Ian on 146 . First time in many years since I was on 146. A great day out enjoyed it so much.
