I still love servicing these and have several still boxed as well as many other tube radios.
Very good narration
Nice beam
Thanks Best talking beam i ever had.
Really cool video for the time in which is was recorded. Kind of neat to see how far audio and processing has came in a 7 year period.
whats the pf on the vac variable ?
10/150 pf sorry it took so long to answer

Why is he comparing to the bird when the bird is not even a good meter? The bird is trash. It gives you an over Unaccurate reading. It makes you think your radio is more powerful than it is. They make American made and they put the American price tag on it. Bird is trash.
Can someone thoroughly explain why rms watts are more valuable than PEP watts, is it because rms watts are present for a longer period of time?
RMS is not more valuable, there are literally 1000's of misinformed "experts" out there. RMS and PEP are two different types of measurements. Both are measuring power output, but all these people using a Bird RMS Meter to measure the output of their radios while modulating the signal (talking/whistling) should be using a Bird PEP meter. An RMS meter should only be used to measure the power of an unmodulated signal (deadkey).... and a PEP meter should be used when you want to measure the peak power of a modulated signal (talking/test tone/whistle/etc). I will try and give an explanation about the difference and why the 2 different measurements matter. Hopefully you know what a deadkey is ! Now we start testing... So you key your mic and you do not make any noise, and an RMS meter shows that you have a 4 watt signal. So great, you have a 4 watt RMS signal, and that would be correct. Now hold your old noisy ticking Timex watch up to your mic and have your mic gain all the way up so your mic and radio hear the tick. Now every time the watch ticks your RMS meter barely moves up to show you 5 watts. Then we modify your watch so it ticks really fast! Now your RMS meter shows you 8 watts. Great, so the RMS meter shows us 4, 5, and 8 watts. So did your peak power change? NOPE Now lets do those same tests with a PEP meter. When we deadkey the radio with no sound it shows us 4 watts. When the watch ticks slow the PEP meter shows you 16 watts every time the watch ticks, then we modify the watch again so it ticks really fast again, and the PEP meter shows 16 watts. Just Great, so the PEP meter shows us 4, 16, and 16 watts. So the results are, the: RMS meter shows us 4, 5, and 8 watts PEP meter shows us 4, 16, and 16 watts Why? because the PEP meter reacts fast and can detect the peak of the signal. The RMS meter will never show the peak of the signal, but as the watch ticks faster the RMS meter is trying to average the 16 watt pulses with the 4 watt deadkey, The faster the tick the higher the average, but it will never add up to 16. The PEP meter reads the 16 watt peak every time it senses the peak and shows 16, so no matter how fast or slow the tick, it will always show the peak, and in this case the peak is 16 watts on every tick, no matter if the tick is fast or slow, it's still 16 watts PEP. Hopefully that helps. This was just my attempt at a layman's explanation. Don't try this with your watch, I won't be responsible for you modifying your Timex. Even a PEP meter would not be fast enough to detect the tick of the watch properly. My analogy above is accurate, but only an oscilloscope would show the results I describe above properly. People who say only Bird watts matter are misinformed. It gets way more complicated than my explanation above. Modulated signals get complex, and just because a Bird RMS meter shows more watts with one radio setup compared to another radio setup does NOT mean that the one that shows more RMS power has more peak power, or is a cleaner signal, or has more modulation, or gets out better. To truly know what your signal looks like and how much power you have peak and rms, you need both types of meters and an oscilloscope to see if the signal is clean. Even then, how that signal and power gets transmitted out into the air depends on your coax, your antenna, and even your antenna height. PS... if you do not know what RMS and PEP are, just think of RMS as the "average power", and PEP as the "peak power". It is not exactly that simple, but close enough. Watch my video here: th-cam.com/video/8dMAm0UUlgw/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps, now let the smoke begin.
Trying to find how to hack HSTNS PL-30 rev 10. My board is way different.
When you add a 220 plug do you wire it then same? Blac, green white?
Your black and white will be your 110v and green is ground. 110 on white 110 on black.
Dear i have an question. I connected this to my 12 volt battery and the fan started to run on full speed after 5 seconds. And i wanted to keep this connected to my 12v battery system. But when i power 220v volts to it the supply fan came to silent. Did you know how to stop the fan from running on idle connect with 12v battery?
I don't understand why you would be hooking this up to a battery, the power supply takes the place of the battery.
You are my Man. I just modified my same model. In the middle of night around 3am. Thank you so much so so much ❤️
How much adjustment do you still get from the variable after the resistor is installed?
About 3/4 of a volt or less. Thanks
@@mm555nc9 : Thank you. So, when you showed your voltages here, is that with the pot at full or minimum voltage?
@@TheLonesometoadimportant question!
@@mm555nc9 : one of mine came out perfectly at 14.5. Just where I wanted it. The other one is stuck at 16.89 and I can't change it. So I removed the resistor and is still stuck at 16.89.
I love gamma driven antennas but have never heard of variable,i must investigate this. Thanks for the video buddy.
Direct feed it ... And use balun or just direct feed
Again you didn’t listen to the video,it is directly feed to the gamma and has one inch braid coming off the half inch helix coax going to the driver element. Thanks
Boom sag tighten back bone
You did'nt listen to the video, i did tighen the boom up. and this antenna is the best talking antenna i ever had. 48 years on the air. Thanks P.S. about the vacum varible gamma don't knock till you try it.
It's bent up
The variable tunning cap will cause loss ... Don't use⚠️
I’m getting motion sickness from all the camera movement…
If you talk much locally a Horizontal Beam is a Terrible choice. If you mount it vertical you can still work everything. Go get him

Sir I want to say thank you for making the video. I was having trouble out my power supply conversion. I used your method and it works great Thanks again!
Your welcome thanks for watching.
Those 2 different model numbers are different on the control pcb. You cant do the same mod to the HSTNS
Not sure what your talking about, but thanks for watching.

He is a dipollock 😅😅
You need to take your old antenna to the junk store
Great antenna though trees are the enemy of any reception. Mean power heat marks.
Why should you do that......
If you have a radio that does not have a lot of average power but has a lot of pep swing it is possible to see a 250 watt average and a 1200 watt pep Probably sounds like crap but it is possible I have a radio that only swings 5 watts average but swings 40 watts pep on my amp I get real good PEP swing but I don't have no average swing it's real low
you are correct, this guy doesn't understand the difference between rms, average, peak. hopefully he does by now since this video is already 5 years old.
Why don't you show how to hook up power supply in radio that would be helpful.
I do not own that radio any more, there are only a few wires to hook up. Sorry
One more question. Dak 10 loses am. And lower side band at times watt meter pegs keeps upper side band thanks for the help on the wiring working d104
Hey I have 2 of these a 9 and 10 what the mic wiring for d104 both rigs have 4 pin mic plugs
pin 1 is audio, pin 2 ground, pin 3 is receive, pin 4 transmit. hope this helps.

Looks good if I may make a suggestion remove that hardline off that boom. Not a wise decision best to have insulation between the boom and hardline.
Talking good like it is, it's in conduit pipe and the SWR is flat. Thanks
@@mm555nc9 okay I couldn't see it looked like the coax is taped to the boom I apologize.
I like that 👍
where do you get them?
Did you say you were driving it with 80 watts?
25 watt drive. Thanks
How's the vacuum gamma holding up for you
Doing good rooster, got the swr close to flat. Thanks
You should get the heliax off your boom least 4-6 inches away
Whats the reason for that ?
So you don’t have any common mode.
@@woodchuck8197 Don't understand watt your asking.
Good decision. Put a Antron 99 above it for a spotter and to talk local to those working on the vertical polarization.
You would have phasing issue
@@lizzyfan1986 no you wouldn’t. They are in opposite polarity.
Why put a lightning attractor above it. Put Sirio serious antenna instead.
How high for talking skip with a beam?
@@lizzyfan1986 No issue by mounting a vertical ground plane antenna above a horizontal aka flat side beam.
What are you going to do with the old Moonraker?
How long do you burn it in for ?
