That’s a very dangerous angle to be in against a half decent train boxer that using peekaboo style. Mike Tyson knocked out a lot of people who was caught in the angle. Your opponent all he has to do is jump switch his legs to the side of you and your guard is wide open for his hook. Mike Tyson made a career out of that. But I also can see your point of view of what you’re doing.

Take Muay Thai some jiujitsu and you will be good , go to a class and they will teach you actual combinations and how to punch kick knee and elbow and you would spar that instructor after less then 6 months

I have learned over the years that it isn't technique but training methodologies that makes a martial effective. I used to think trapping was cool but now I look at it as nothing more than a set of prearranged movements performed off of expected responses. There is no spontaneity in it. It isn't that some of the ideas couldn't be effective but to what end? The idea that a series of traps will work while staying at the one range without the opponent doing something unexpected is unrealistic. I get that you can add other elements to develop different responses, but if your absolute goal is self defense, wouldn't it be more effective to develop gross vs fine motor movements by crashing in and body locking? Fine motor movements are easily lost under pressure. Didn't Bruce Lee say that techniques should be chipped away at and not added to? Wasn't the idea of JKD to reject what is useless, adopt what is useful? I get way more out of defending side control or mount than I ever got out of trapping as far as developing useful fighting skills goes. My jujitsu instructor, who happens to be the guy that started sheepdog response with Tim Kennedy, remarked one day that jujitsu is becoming more JKD than JKD because it is more alive and responses are developed in real time against resistance almost all the time. I usually don't make these comments but I still consider myself at heart, a JKD guys even though I have learned through the years that making these observations is generally frowned upon.

So what you are saying is that sayoc kali advocates bringing a weapon against a man who doesn't have one? Are you sure, legally speaking, that's a good idea? I mean, maybe if the guy is bigger and stronger but even then, there are legal ramifications for going above and beyond the force required to stop a threat. It sounds like you are teaching people to go for the kill, and take advanatage of those that are weaker as opposed to laying out a logical use of force sequence. I am pretty sure if you enter in on a guy trying to punch with a cut that punctures the jugular, you will have to answer for it. Especially if others see it as your first move in response to the situation. The presence of the weapon is supposed to remind us why not to fight, not drive our ego. Once you decide to carry a weapon, particulary a firearm, your life changes and you must be willing to walk away from battles for the ego.

Always thought trapping was a foundational aspect of FMA . But I keep seeing it refer to asJKD. It’s not a big deal, just curious. It does however work and work well as a means to an end.
