The Abandoned M/V Roger Blough
With recent news on the decision to scrap the M/V Cuyahoga, we knew we had to pay our farewells. While there, we decided to make the most of it by visiting the only Hulett Ore Unloader Bucket on public display in Point Park and the abandoned Roger Blough 20 minutes east in Conneaut, OH.

What Happened to Cleveland's Whiskey Island Huletts?
มุมมอง 1.6K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
At the mouth of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland Ohio, lies the last remaining Hulett ore unloaders in the world. Once towering over the Cleveland and Pittsburgh dock on Whiskey Island, they were disassembled and put into 'storage', hopefully to one day be resurrected at one of Cleveland's various parks. Disassembled in 2000, 24 years later, they are still sitting right where they were placed. T...

Great Lakes Fleet, Great Lakes Towing is the green & red harbor tugs with the big G on their stacks; aka "G Tugs"
The ALPENA is the oldest active WWII boat on the great lakes shy of the Lee A Tregurtha which was an oiler during WWII.
Present in Tokyo Bay during the surrender, to boot
No she won't she suffered a major fire in her engine room & other engineering spaces while in winter layup. She was moved here, due to the Canadian National Railroad owns the slip; the slip she was in before being moved here the CN had to pay slip fees every month. She did suffer an engine room explosion while being built; she was delayed by a year due to the rebuilding of the engine room.
Roger Blough's primary route was Duluth, MN to Gary, IN with a load of pellets for USX Steel.
I'm a big ship & freight train fan and I see in Lorain you guys caught a Conrail caboose. Very cool. I like your cameraman's W&LE hat!!
My wife and I have Kayaked around her numerous times this past year. That's a time when you realize just how big Roger is! It's truly humbling! Hope she can be saved.
I would love to see the Roger Blough sailing again. I did get a chance to see her in Duluth back in 1990. ❤
Not abandoned
Hopefully the economy can pick up so than the MV Roger Blough can be returned to Service. But, hey, at least it’s in good shape.
Cuyahoga is being scrapped in the spring in Port Colbourne Ont
Long term layup is the industry terminology Fate undetermined
The ship isn't "abandoned." You're being misleading or you're ill-informed.
Gitche Gumee
They should dry dock it and make it a museum honoring all the sailors on all the great ore ships
The Company that owns the Blough is Great Lakes Fleet they own Edwin H Gott Edgar B Speer Presque Isle Phillip R Clarke Arthur M Anderson Cason J Callaway Great Republic John G Munson Roger Blough
Glad to see they younger generation discussing history, enjoy your enthusiasm and efforts to spreading information. Don't worry about mispronouncing all the Indian names so often used on the Lakes. Michipicoten think of pick-a-cotton and you will nail it for example.
Cadillac was a maritime classer..built 1943.
ILM also has a tug/ barge..newer construction..
Semi art deco, and industrial/ that is the style of the Sykes and Ryerson.
Tregurtha is active and in very good condition...Same with the Anderson.
No boom on the Sherwin... inactive for a very long time..
The Blough is what...850 ft?...No real need to lengthen her ... retro- fitting her with the Callaway's gear makes sense...she could be active and useful again.
U.S.S. Chiwawa pronounced "Shewawa", great book if interested "King of the Oilers" by Jon L Strupp
She is not abandoned !
The power is on…to run the bilge pumps..
and to stop water pipes from freezing
Ok this could be my new "bestest" favorite channel! I am a boatnerd through and through and a WWII aviation junkie. Could be 46 years flying have tainted me. Great perspective of the Hulett unloader its seems such a waste that no one invested in preserving their future, I have always been mesmerized by the Roger Blough and wondered since it appears to be cost prohibitive to rebuild if converting her to an ATB would be feasible? She was towed in Nov 2022. Seems to be such a waste to scrap, but since they stripped her who knows. Cuyahoga unfortunately follows a familiar trail, can't save them all. Look forward to more vids.
Conceivably the Blough could be converted to a more conventional self-unloader.. instead of the very limited system she has.
Awesome video you rock be safe out there
Respect
I wish I had enough money so I can save that ship it reminds me of the edmond fitzgerald
Amazing!
they have been scrapped. i have seen it myself. they are GONE
The one clip was from Conneaut, Oh. Thanks for that, they had a huge moveable "shed" that you can see in the background, used for maintenance of these giants.
Caught that too. 😊
