WHAT WE DO
We give handy tips and advice in our TH-cam channel covering topics such as cycling, fishing, DIY as well as engineering.
We are in awe of the steep history this country has as leaders in many areas including cycling, engineering and fishing. We know the younger generation have the brains but we would love to encourage them to take up a hobby such as these and learn more about our British Heritage by making sure they have the right equipment and knowledge.
We are passionate about saving our British engineering heritage and keeping quality machines from going to the scrapheap by in some cases restoring them and in others just giving them the care and attention they need to be rehomed either to existing hobbyist or our next generation.
Subscribe to our channel to see the latest tips and advice and what we have to offer. We also build and restore bicycles, fishing equipment and machine tools plus we can machine bespoke parts.

Stationary Engine Truck Wheel Bushing
มุมมอง 3629 หลายเดือนก่อน
Small job to make a bush for a stationary engine wheel, sounds wrong but it's for the truck to pull it to the show ground. All was a bit loose so no need for micrometers etc just wanted it to work up to 2mph. Hoping to get a video of it running and on it's truck soon. Thanks for watching, machinery can be dangerous, I don't advise the way I do somthing, copy me at your own risk, cheers.

Been a busy few days bringing this new to me Colchester lathe in to the workshop but worth all the effort. This will open up what I can machine and will help with new videos. It's an ex school machine with little use and then made model steam engines for the last few years. Sorry about the auto focus on the first part, not sure why this did this again! Please be safe when moving this kind of ma...

มุมมอง 530ปีที่แล้ว
Pick this New England shaper up from a local engineer who has decided to downscale, he has lots of machines to move on and I have been helping to sort through things (the reason I have not had a video for a while). Just getting the machine back on it's stand and ready for a clean up.

New Machine Day : Horizontal Harrison Milling Machine
That's a very useful multi purpose designed tool, many thanks.😄
Cheers, glad you found it usefull.
Very useful, I knew there had to be a quick, easy way.
@@bruceang82 hope you find it useful, cheers for watching
GREAT VIDEO THANKS FOR MAKING AND SHARING I'M HOPEFULLY GOING THE PURCHASE THE KIT , WHAT SMALLL BUDGET LATHE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND MATT ?
@@drmisfit Thanks for watching, hope your build goes well and you have fun. I would always say a myford 7 if your funds will allow, always reliable and easy to get hold of parts and accessories. You do pay a bit more than other latches but it is worth it in the end. Where abouts are you based?
I haven’t purchased the kit yet keep looking at videos I would love to try and build something like this and run it off steam , from what I can see a milling machine is a must as well , I was an apprentice fitter welder when I left school but never learned any machinists skills but TH-cam is a god send for anything these days I’m in Norfolk, by the way have you made a boiler for yours ? Regards Peter
@drmisfit the s50 is a fantastic one to learn a lot of skills on. A milling machine is not a must to build a s50 you can use a vertical slide(another accessory easily got for the myford) but the mill would make life alot easier and will come in for lots of jobs on other projects, it would also do your drilling so 2in1. As for the boiler I haven't got one completed yet. If I here of anything out your way I will let you know.
It’s a BSP thread which has a thread angle of 55 degrees. You should be setting your compound to no greater than half that angle, so max is 27.5 degrees rather than the 30 used.
Morning, when checking this to set the lathe the thread angle of the regulator was 60 thats why I think it was not fitting, I think the regulator was machined wrong in the first place, he had it for years and no idea of make etc. He said it was always a bit tight! Cheers for your comment.
Very interesting run through. Lots of things that I didn’t realise and makes me glad that I got my Super 7 when I did. Both lathes are capable machines, but the Super 7 is just so convenient in many ways it’s a pleasure to use.
Yep the ML7 is a fantastic machine but the Super 7 is a well thought out upgrade, mainly as you said for convenience of use but also in other areas like the head bearings, a huge leap forward. Thanks
I like the boxford lathe at the start of the video has the boxford got a much bigger spindle bore compared to the myford
Hi thanks for the question, I'm not at the machines to measure this but going off memory they both have a MT2 taper but the Myford is just under 5/8" and the Boxford is around 3/4" maybe a bit over, cheers.
I am just about to buy this piece of kit, I am oh so happy to have seen how you covered this build. I guess it's going to be my go to teaching tool.. So Thank you, Thank you Oh so very much. Your a Star Sir, A Star indeed.
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you found it of help. The S50 is a brilliant learning tool, lots of different methods and skills involved you will enjoy every step. Just don't rush and plan every step to make it "easy" and do as much in one set up as possible to save time and to get all sizes spot on. Check my videos for odd bits that I alter from the plans, mainly the sole plate to the cylinder holes and more than anything enjoy. Let me know how you get on. Cheers
your autofocus sensitivity or something is causing focus hunting!
Yep was having problems with that camera, cheers, sorted now, the only time now is when I forget. Thanks alot.
@@mattsbitsnbobsworkshop thanks for the video. Good info. I hope to have some sort of index adapter. All these specific videos are very important to passing knowledge. The machining community thanks you for that too! Since I'm in the community, there you have it. Cheers
@@billgilbride7972 Thank you so much, yes the hope is that it helps someone like yourself in the first place and also the collective community can share other things that are not being taught, like going to the moon no one will know how to do it without passing it on. Cheers
What is cost
If you have a look around on the internet I'm sure they will be on there, as one comment says below they found one on Ebay, cheers.
hi, where did you get the lathe? i cant find many used models. im in the market for 1 .
Howdo, it's a guy I know who is slowly down sizing due to health reasons, I've had a few bits off him, Harrison mill etc. Where in the world are you?
I love trikes, but I have to say I never understood why Burrows went for the rear wheel stub axle design. And it's telling that no other trike manufacturer has adopted this approach. It just makes the design much less versatile, unless all you're interested in is racing. Beautiful trike nonetheless.
Don't quote me on this but I'm sure he covers it in one of his books and I remember talking about it briefly with him years ago and it goes like this. Saves wieght, more aero, much easier when you have a flat. (also to put into a car). Other companies buy parts of the shelf, makes a lot of sense (not always whats best, sometimes it is) Mike made this originally for him and Mr Pegg as one offs he made them better for what ever reason then they took it into production and kept the design. As you say if it's for racing, well at the time that's what they were for, hope this help and thanks for watching.
I've got the Mk 1 with no spindle lock, any tips greatly appreciated!
hmm thats a good one let me have a think and get back to you.
Hope it gets better soon for ya
Thanks a lot, it's nearly there.
👍good reminder , hope all well soon
@@columjevens4612 cheers, yep only takes a few seconds.
Sorry the damn bacteria got you. I have ongoing issues with cracked skin and can get infected easily. I wear gloves all the time in the shop, it's annoying but better than going back on antibiotics. Take care.
Cheers for that, yep they can be annoying more so when they split like mine did, any makes you have found work well?
@@mattsbitsnbobsworkshop I use medical nitrile gloves that are accelerator free when operating machinery. Thick rubber nitrile gloves when cleaning and removing swarf. Sometimes regular vinyl or latex gloves for short duration work.
Cheers, yep it's the medical ones I had on but will look in to the others you mentioned, thanks.
Ouch! that sounds very painful! Glad you're on the mend.
Thanks a lot, the most painful bit was when the doctor stuck a needle in several times without anaesthetic.
@@mattsbitsnbobsworkshopyes, but the feeling when the pressure drops is also nice :-)
@@TorteTS Yep the next night at 3 am I did it myself with nail clippers as the doctor didn't get anything out!!!! Then it was nice lol
Great video Thanks
@@paulmorrey4298 no worries, thanks for watching.
Hi thanks for all the time spent making this series of videos. It’s very helpful as I hope to start work on my kit in August 24 after a house move. Did you know that your links to the Tubal Cain series on the subject are all broken? Can't find it all yet.
Hi thanks for watching and you will love making the S50, let us know how you get on. Looks like MEW have changed the location, try this link and change the 1 at the end to 2 or 3 or 4 etc to find what you need, cheers www.model-engineer.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/documents/sally-1.pdf Please support the MEW if you can
Waw, very helpfull, But i have a problem, how to center chuck on rotari table accurate and quickly pls make a video😢
Let me have a look into it cheers
Really interesting to watch. The screws are perfect. Thanks for doing this for me Matt.
Cheers Rich glad they are just the job 😉
Thanks for showing, what a great little drill👍
No worries
Thanks for demo . Got myself one of these bikes second hand so great information for me . 👍
Glad it helped
Very compact machine, hard decision for the man to downsize , but knowing machines are going to a good workshop must help ,
He is not admitting defeat easily, it's not helping me and his son but we are doing our best, I've took some and found good homes for other stuff, keep watching more to follow.
Lovely lathe to have in your workshop, enjoy 👍
Oh I plan to, cheers my friend.
Nice job 👍
Thank you, I have been told they are fitted and music fills the air. Cheers
Are the plans in a issue of ME or did you build it on the fly ?
No plans, yes a bit on the fly, a bit in my head, built from scrap for a job I was doing at the time, then it morphed twice. The other reason no plans is to make it fit your lathe and your requirements, there is an article in MEW number 327, hope you have a look.
Great video thanks
Cheers Paul
Very nice build. I need to make one for my ER32 collet chuck. Thanks, Norm in Arizona I subscribed 😊
Cheers Norm, let us know how you get on.
Great video, thank you so much!
Thanks a lot, cheers for watching.
Rxelent little project!
I always thought the 'topslide' was called a compound slide in the UK.
It's funny in my neck of the woods they have always (as far as I know) been a topslide, I don't know if it was someone local who brought it back from the States or read a book, but locals always say topslide but down the road it's compound. I have used both in other videos, just to make it worse. Cheers
We used Colchester lathes in college in the 70's. Found them good lathes to use plus liked the coloured speed dials.
My other half commented the other day about them, saying "Even I couldn't mess that up." Bet she could, haha. Yep I agree very user friendly.
Colchester's were the first mass produced precision industrial lathes.
Thanks for the info, did'nt realise the first, but no surprise cos the number of clones and copies proves they got somert right. Cheers
@@mattsbitsnbobsworkshop Colchester's best small lathe was the Chipmaster. These lathes were built mostly from parts from Students. The way Colchester did this was through their quality control system. Parts of close tolerance were specifically selected for use in the construction of the Chipmaster. I owned a second hand one of these machines for 20 years. A very friendly and accurate lathe to use.
@@haroldpearson6025 I looked at a chipmaster many moons ago but did'nt get on with it so went down the myford road, not sure if it may have been just that one but this student feels better, maybe I got a good one? But like you I know people who love the chipmaster, swings and roundabouts.
You sound like Fred Dibnah! Cheers from Alaska!
Howdo, yep grew up about 10 miles down the road from him, I see his old landrover quite often having some work done at a garage just around the corner. Thanks for watching from Alaska. Cheers
Sweet lathe!
Cheers
i think iv got the handbook some ware for that model bought by mistake
They did'nt make it easy, the Mk1, Mk2, Mk1.5, the roundhead the square head the 1800!!!!
Hi Matt, Thats a great bit of gear and very versatile. I,m going to make one for my Warco WM 240, Great channel smashing to watch. Stay Well Regards Mike
Thanks so much Mike for a really nice comment. Good luck and let me know how you get on, one addition add a ball to the end of the rod to make it a bit more accurate, cheers for watching.
What a lovely machine for its age. Hope it doesn't get broken up for parts and end up on ebay as so many of these do. Really good early machines are getting rare now.
Cheers Nick, one reason I am trying to help him on here, people watching this will understand so hoping to find it a good home.
Where is the lathe in the UK please?
In Lancashire, just outside Preston, Cheers
Damn! I have been looking for one of those for years! Only problem is I'm in South Africa or I would snap it up today!!!!
well if you want to price shipping lol
Looks great
Cheers for that, I hope I look that good at that age, lol
Are these wheels worth buying?
Only you can answer that one, are they what you want? Looks, performance, price etc etc or would a modern set be better with all the benefits they have? Good luck, let us know how you get on and thanks for watching.
I that whole vat of water for cooling?
It's mainly for show but in relation to the volume of water there is very little surface area for the heat to escape compared with a radiator in a car so it is probably for the best, cheers for watching.
Interesting! Never had the fortune of handling nice old equipment myself but you’ve some nice videos!
@@MyLinguineThanks
A joy to watch and listen to. 👏👏👍😀
Cheers Andrew, I'm glad to have worked on it and got it ready for the show season, I took the volume down a lot on the video, it's a bit loud!!
Great tip thanks, been trying to figure out how to get my boxford apart.....now I've seen this it's obvious, just use an Allen key then you have a lever there too and if it's stiff stick a tube over it
Cheers, yep I use an allen key for a while but always ended up using the allen key for something else so was never there but the hex bar doesn't get used for owt ele so is always (!!!) on the lathe waiting. Thanks for watching.
Very nice idea, multi function accessory!
Cheers, hope it helps you.
Nice little job. I bet it won't even do five miles a year lol. Happy customer.
HAHA yep normally the vans parked right behind. Should have a video of it running soon, cheers
Great tool, thanks for sharing.
Cheers, thanks for watching
What max temperature?
Not sure but they were used for jewellery for years so in that range I would think, cheers for watching.
I served my apprenticeship in the 70's using the Colchester lathes. Love them. Really good lathes.
Figers crossed lol I've used them but not for any length of time like yourself but they do seem to be sorted in terms of usability etc. Cheers and when I've got it all set up I hope to prove you right.
