It got blessed by the youtube algorithm
LOL 🙂
maybe it's because of the lack of information on how to create nomadnet pages on the web, and a combination with the youtube algorhytm too
I think that anything to do with mesh capable hardware/software is pretty popular right now and there isn't allot of YT content right now (especially supporting Ubuntu) to support Reticulum with it's different flavors. Excellent timing on your part !
Thank you for your answer.
If I had to guess the instructional nature of the video means it will be more likely to be picked up in search and attract viewers who might not be aware of your channel.
Thank you for your answer.
i was interested in how to host pages, there isnt much info on that and how to manage .mu (micron) pages anywhere online, you're one of the first to touch the subject i beleive on youtube.
Hi , could you please test it out on python Opencv, I'm about to buy it but still consider. Can it choose different channel. I need the infra red only
English storm chads keep winning 😎
LOL. Nice to hear from you. I already watched all your videos !
At first I thought your comment was from a bot 😂 Did you tidy up your channel ? I am sure I watched more videos than that.
No, they must just be so good you thought there were more of them ;)
Many thank for these videos Simon, appreciate the effort you put into them and make it so interesting..
Thank you for your comment, Mark. Glad to hear you find them useful !
I picked third option that works great and they don't tell you about it, its called "close window"
Really glad to see reticulum content becoming more and more relevant
If you are on a different Linux, there might be a native pkg available. It appears that the Arch Aur, NixOS, and FreeBSD have NomadNet packages too, as packaged Python (non-pip). Try "nomadnet" or "python3-nomadnet" on your other platforns.
Interesting- how does this fit with Meshtastic for you? Either/ or? I’m assuming I can repurpose my Heltec devices for this
It's either/or at the moment since there is no connectivity between the two networks and they use different frequencies anyway. The Heltec works fine with this. There is firmware for both v2 and v3. The radio range is of course the same for both systems. I like the way that Nomadnet allows you to host simple webpages which can be served over LoRa.
Hardly anything on youtube about this, nice one
Thank you, Anthony. That is the main reason I started making these videos as I was finding it hard to find instructions on how to do this.
The interfaces should be added to the config file within the .reticulum folder. Nomadnet, when launching, will start RNS and LXMF before it starts itself
Excellent advice. Thank you 🙂
Hi Simon, got your messages and will take a look at this later today!
Excellent. Thank you for your support, Daniel.
Reticulum surprisingly sends photos and files quite effectively. I've tried some decent sized sends and everything checksums.
I love that you're doing these videos. You don't directly see the impact, but your videos provide great reference even when in the future menus will change. This is how we get more into the community, people producing videos like yours.❤️
Thank you for your very nice comment. I am hoping to awaken interest and make it easy for people. Comments like yours motivate me to do more 🙂
I want to run my own Rnode, but the only reason that's stopping me is that not too many people are using it there's not too many people in my area that are using meshtastic to start with
Well somebody has to be the first ;-) Same here but I went ahead and did it anyway. I think I might be an early adopter. You can be too !
@@fotografm that is very true
@fotografm I've done multiple tests in my local Metropolitan City at some pretty locations, but not a single rnode yet. We are thick with meshtastic nodes that it is no problem to bounce to upwards of a 2-hour Drive North and South. I am having a signal strength issue with my helteks though. Not getting anywhere near the performance I would expect in range. I have to do a bit more testing, but I feel like I'm missing something in the settings, or an imbalance in my configuration.
@@TTS-TP The maximum power setting is 22dBm and hopefully you have set the correct frequency. I always mount the antenna directly onto the box containing the node in order to avoid loss in the coax cable. The short pigtail connection is lossy enough already.
You definitely do not want to get caught running running on the wrong frequency @@fotografm
At 6:21 : You do not need to install all of those. Installing the deb with APT already installs the basic dependencies. The only thing you need to install afterwards are the drivers for the hardware you are using. I configured the deb file that way so that people don't end up installing hundreds of megabytes of drivers for hardware they don't have. At 7:44 : Never use the AGCs on the RTL-SDR. They are designed for very wideband signals like DVB-T and cause clipping when used on other signals.
That is really useful information. I appreciate it and will follow your advice on the next install !
Do you mean sudo apt install /home/user/Downloads/sdrpp_ubuntu_jammy_amd64.deb and that's it ?
@@fotografm yes. And then you just install the rtl-sdr drivers with "sudo apt install rtl-sdr"
Could be the tls switch the problem, bcause the system you r using haven't the board's certificate. Try again without tls
My question is, where are you pasting the command for the depends from? I'm having to install it and see what it asks for.
That's what I did too. I then listed the required packages in a text note and copied and pasted from there.
@@fotografm got it, that occurred to me after asking. Thanks!

The instruction is great ! No problem to install the hat on a pi .. but while using the rasp 4, I had issues with the browsers. With every browser I tried, the MQTT save button ( floppy disk) would not respond. Also other settings did not respond as it should. After lots of frustration I tried a older raspberry 3 .. and this worked .. it is slower , but now I can save changes in the config. Or? did I miss something... I am not a expert ..
I don't have an explanation for that but I am glad that you got it to work !
Thank you Simon, you really helped me out with this video! (Couldn't get it up and running following the steps outlined on the Meshtastic website). Question: is it now also possible to interact with the module via the python CLI or is that something different?
Thank you for this video, it is more material to help those of us less experience along the way. I am knowledgeable in things ham, but not so much these interfaces, or processes. With the Limited amount of material out there to visually demonstrate, the community cannot grow at anywhere near the rate. There are many of us from the amateur radio world who come to videos like these to build our game plan for implementation and reassurance that we are following appropriate procedures. Thank you, I'm glad I'm not alone in difficulty of set up.
Thank you for these 2 clear videos showing how to navigate the user interface for SDR Console with the RSPDX! Your instructions are clear, and have helped me begin using this with my RSPDX - r2. I was struggling to understand SDR Console's UI until I watched your videos.
Glad you found it useful !
Excellent video as always. You really piqued my interest with this Reticulum thing, it seems extremely powerful and if you can set up bbs and such, that'd be amazing. Imagine the power of this stuff in extreme situations where regular telco is down. One thing that caught my eye was that permissions thing, I have not actually tested, but if the usb serial devices come up as rw for root and rw for group "dialout" then all you'd have to do is add your user to that group and logout/login: sudo usermod -a -G dialout user
Thank you for your nice comments and for your hint. Indeed your suggestion would work on Ubuntu and is easier to implement. I probably forgot about this since I have been using EndeavourOS a lot where the dialout group is not present by default. I hope to chat to you via Reticulum some time !
Great test, much better results than expected. Thanks for making the video.
How to fix the same error with USB but on windows?
With windows it should just work straight away. Sometimes, pressing the reset button on the node helps. Also, I close the browser tab that was used to flash the firmware before running the Meschat app since two programs can't both use the same USB port at the same time ;-)
@@fotografm Node restart, program restart, or computer restart do not help. It also doesn't help to do everything from scratch on a different computer. I still can't connect RNode and MeshChat.
@@AlicjaBujak-h8w Have you installed the driver for the CP2102 UART chip ? Windows needs this. Go to www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads and download the CP210-x universal windows driver. Unzip it and right click in the file manager on silabser.inf and select "install this driver" or something like that. Windows hides files extensions by default so you have to switch this on in the file manager to be able to see silabser.inf . You probably need to reboot after installing. Tiny SA only goes up to 960MHz or so. My NanoVna goes up to 2GHz.
The proper way to fix this is to add your user to the group which gives access to tty ports. sudo usermod -a -G dialout $YOURUSERNAME
Thank you for your comment. On Debian based distros and probably also on Fedora this works fine, but EndeavourOS does not have the group "dialout" which is why I looked for alternative solutions.
Hello, thank you for your useful video on this subject. After watching this video, I had a question: how to change the priority of the camera used to infrared so that it can record infrared footage on any system it is connected to, and after finishing the work, return the priority to the same RGB so that the priority changes are not permanent. Can you help me find the answer to my question?
Just buy a USB IR camera.
On Linux, the camera appears as two different devices - Camera-C for RGB and Camera-I for infrared.
Or take the IR block filter out of normal camera.
@@fotografm Thanks Please upload a video tutorial on how to change the priority of a Logitech webcam from RGB to IR and vice versa if possible.
I missed the transmission. I was hoping to catch it with a Wellbrook loop and an RSP-dx from the Midlands of the UK but totally slipped my mind to set my alarm - It is Christmas and I am on holiday :) I am hoping to visit Grimeton at some stage with a friend and colleague at some stage. Reading other comments I may need to rethink the receive setup for VLF - I need to have a look at the Airspy HF+.... The Behringer performed incredibly well! If you are looking at antennae, have a look at the Wellgood loop antenna - I bought one as a backup for if/when my Wellbrook dies as the company and founder are sadly no more. It is based on the Wellbrook loop amplifier but I've not had a reason to try it in anger yet. The Wellbrook pretty much prevented me throwing to towel in due to HF noise - it is a godsend. I moved from Windows over 15 years ago to Ubuntu firstly and then Mint about 10 years ago. All of my systems run Linux and I have a Mac for Office applications. Life is sweeter and easier without the aggravation of Windows. When my partner had her last laptop she asked me to put Mint on it and has been running it since (7 years or so?) and I don't get hassled with support issues - it just works. I do run Windows in a VM (best place for it) on my main shack/office machine to run SDR Console and a few other apps but everything else radio related is native Linux. Just found your channel and subscribed. 73 de M0SNR
Thank you for your interesting comments, Richard. I also have a Wellbrook loop which is great except that it takes up more space and doesn't work quite so well at 17kHz as the PA0RDT MiniWhip. There is an "improved" design called the Wellgood Loop and I thought that if ever my Wellbrook preamp broke then I would replace it with a Wellgood version. Yes - the loop antennas certainly have better noise immunity than electric field antennas. I tried installing SDR-Console under Wine on Ubuntu without much success. Maybe I will try it again using Bottles. I use a standalone Proxmox server as my VM host which works extemely well, except that the RTLSDR USB connection does not pass through fully to a VM, otherwise I would be running windows as you do. SDRPlay technical support was unable to help with the problem. Which VM hypervisor do you use which allows access to the RSPDX ? I am also trying out SDRConnect from SDRPlay which is getting better and runs nicely with the RSPDX on Linux. 73 de G4EYR
@@fotografm Hi Simon, I'm using Oracle VM Virtualbox and seems to work pretty well. I did think about using WIne initially but there seemed to be many caveats and I thought I would get better compatibility going down the VM route. All of the USB devices that I want to pass through (RSPdx, Elad TM2 and the IC-9700 work well and are seen by SDR Console and SDRUno. I would like to move my OS to a newer version of Mint to run SDRConnect but as the machine is stable I'm loathed to make large changes to it. I have a replacement SSD drive to do it but it's like going to the dentist - only go when necessary :)
@@rjy8960 Hi Richard. I will give Oracle VM Virtualbox a try. I ran it on windows a while back and remember discovering I needed to install the correct extension pack to make things work so will try it on Mint. I know what you mean about upgrading - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" ;-) Are you running windows 10 or 11 in your virtual machine ?
@@rjy8960 I am setting up some machines with EndeavourOS Arch based Linux and it seems to run really nicely. Not sure about being able to install Virtual Boc there though...
@@fotografm Windows 10 - I'm going to stay with 10 for as long as I can although you can access the TPM with Oracle VM AFAIK although I don't want any more advertising, telemetry and scumware that is / may be included in 11. I only use a Windows VM on this machine because I need base OS support and not because I want it. If I have to move then I will but at the moment absolutely no plans to upgrade. I've limited the resources available to the VM to what it needs to run the programmes I need and no more as I see it only as a necessity rather than a choice :)
did your gps work when you did this? still havent gotten it to work.
I didn't try the GPS snce I don't need it. Also, the GPS antenna would not be able to receive any satellites indoors. You would need to place the antenna in a clear outdoor location and wait up to 10 minutes for the alamanac to download and synchronise. Also you need a backup battery on the board to provide backup storage for the alamanac when the device is powered down.
@@fotografm is the standby switch supposed to be on or off? Thanks, been trying to figure it out for the spec5 nomad.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, Simon.
Thanks, Mike, and to you too !
Good day Simon, I had high hopes this morning, being all ready to go with my Sailor R-1120 receiver, coupled to my Wellbrook 1530+ antenna.... I heard nothing on 17.2 kHz unfortunately. Quickly changed over to my SDRplay-RSPdx. And strangely enough, I did see and hear a faint signal on 18 kHz, same as visible on your recording in your video. But not anything on 17.2. Gggrrrr ;-) So, this is something to study more, to make this work. In the past, I do remember I was successful with my Skanti R-5001, which is currently " on the side" . It's a heavy, big beat... Interesting though, using either a soundcard or the mentioned mic- pre amp. So much to explore still. To be continued. 73 from the Netherlands, de PC7H
Hello Roy. Thank you for your interesting comment. It was interesting to see those receivers on your QRZ page as they are unknown to me. The sound card is a simple idea. Even the one built in to most PC's can function quite well, often with higher noise floor though. Good luck with your experiements ! 73 de G4EYR
Wow, listening down there at the bottom end is a completely different business. I honestly have never thought to use an audio interface as a receiver, that's a whole different lane of lateral thinking. Well done and thanks for sharing! A merry Christmas! 73, Jan M7HNK
@fotografm Hello Jan. Thank you for your interesting comment. The sound card is a simple idea which I got from a youtue video about listening to the Schumann resonance around 6 or7Hz ! Merry Christmas, Transmitted with Love
I'm attempting to do this same thing with an original Raspberry Pi Zero.
6:25 So far I haven't managed to get anything except "Loading..." You managed to get it working! Dammit! 👏👏
Nice to see you on another video Simon. I never thought that would be possible.
Nice try. Hope you get it sorted before Christmas day. I have previously listened on my G4CLF based tcvr but it wasn't too good at such a low frequency. 60 kHz Anthorn was a good signal. I did make a low frequency converter with an xtal and Plessey SL6440 but I've no idea where it got to. G4GHB.
Thanks Bill. Let's see how far I get with the construction !
Now i wonder what bandwidth the fcc is monitoring 😮 I also wonder how many watts they used to transmitt that 17khz and what that antenna looks like.
DC to daylight of course 🙂 Transmitter is 200kW to a wire antenna using hundreds of metres of wire !
@@fotografm WWWWOWWWW!!!
It is possible to receive the VLF transmission with a coil of wire plugged into the sound card of a computer and spectrum analysing software which can be downloaded 9soe for free) from the web. I used a 40 turn coil of about 50cm diameter. The shop at Grimeton sell a small hobby receiver using a 555 chip as a demodulator and a small coil antenna. That works to at least 1500 km from the transmitter.
Interesting experiment. I just bought a big plastic box to wind 400 turns of wire around. You need some parallel capacitors to tune it to the right frequency. I will try it first without a preamp and then with a preamp. Let me know how yours goes and I will publish my results when I have some ! Your 40 turns sounds like it might be too few though...
@@fotografm I didn't even tune it so that I could see the spectrum from about 10 kHz up to the limits of the soundcard AtoD converter, about 24 kHz (half the 48 kHz sampling rate) A faster soundcard (e.g. 96 kHz) would cover a wider spectrum.
@@karhukivi I see. Yes - without tuning it would be broadband but the signal levels may be low.
@@fotografm There are quite a few radio hams interested in VLF reception and have websites and software, e.g. Spectrum lab with which to view these signals. Also a few videos on YT about it. The signal strength is good due to the high power of the transmitters but SAQ is not run at the full power, nevertheless it ca be detected with simple receiving equipment and as it is in AM, the Morse can be heard. The other Txs went over to MSK modulation some years ago.
Have you tried the beta of SDRConnect from SDRPlay? I believe there is a Mac and Linux version, since you're leaving Windows.
Yes I tied that on Ubuntu and it's ok. It is not quite as polished as sdrconsole though but at least it works.
New Jersey Drones
Yeah !!!
17k isn't that near audible?
Yes, if your ears could hear radio waves.
Indeed it is. Luckily it is an electromagnetic signal not a sound one otherwise it would drive dogs and bats crazy !
@fotografm What is the signal strength and I'm still confused about the antennas used...that's such a low frequency I'm amazed. I've always thought that it needed to be above a certain Ghz, now my mind has to think that even at extremely low frequency there could be transmission. I was just researching the quarter wave length of 60hz and couldn't believe the distance. Things like Schumman resonance are starting to make more sense. Edit, ok, looked into the antenna and I understand now 👍
Or teenagers crazy. They can hear switched mode power supplies. Physics teachers can exploit this in class, I believe 😅.
@@subdynoman Yep. Even such low frequencies can propagate as EM waves. The PA0RDT miniwhip antenna is amazing. It's only 4cm long which is a miniscule fraction of the wavelength but it really works. It is actually an electrostatic probe more than a radio antenna. The Schumann signals around 6Hz can also propagate around the Earth trapped in a waveguide between the ground and the ionosphere. I will take a listen there but you need a really good filter to filter out the huge signal at 50/60Hz from the mains power supply.
I saw the video of all the astounding preliminaries to put that thing on the air. Lots more than I ever imagined.
Indeed. It reminded me of starting up a steam engine or an old power station !
Is there a link to that video I'd like to see it 👍
