Yara Elfouly: Turning Corners Like Reading Pages, Oct. 22, 2024
The 403rd meeting of the NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024 at 7 pm EDT.
Yara Elfouly: Turning Corners Like Reading Pages: Comics as Tombs, Temples & Mind Palaces
What if I turn around the ruins of ancient places like I read comic pages? What if I trace over the folds and patterns of clothes, cushions and carpets as image and text? From books and buildings to biology notes and beyond, the talk will share a survey of unexpected encounters I’ve had with comics.
Yara Elfouly works in animation and comic-making. She was nominated for an Ignatz Award in 2022 for her comic, Archaeologist Landings. In 2023, she received an MFA in Experimental Animation at CalArts. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Columbus College of Art and Design and working on her ongoing webcomic: Court Comicals. For more, see: www.yaraelfouly.com

    I think that the other big advantage of a middleman like Dominos is the curatorial aspect. It takes a lot of work to find interesting artists, and if Domino can do that work and introduce artists to a wider audience, that's a win for everyone.

    Bill Griffith is a great cartoonist. Ernie Bushmiller, creator of Nancy, was a joke to comics fans. 50 years ago people would joke, "Hey, did you see Nancy today? It actually had a background!" It was considered the nadir of newspaper comics which back then were bland and harmless until young modern artists came along to shake things up. Bill Griffith was syndicated until he did a cartoon which sneaked an image of a penis in it which you could only see if you turned the cartoon upside down so that it had gotten by editors.

    Common sense says do not put a book inappropriate for 5 year old's in a preschool library. does Crom aim his content to children, probably not. it's the attitude that it's suitable to have books akin to porn in young kids schools no matter the story, which should appall any comicbook fan. Anyone that disagrees with that should be investigated for child abuse.

    Jeff Smith HOW is being AGAINST woke (which requires treating people differently based on RACE and Sexuality) RACIST? I think being against the racist and bigoted ideology of your divisive and poisonous secular cult is the right thing to do. When a Leftists like yourself labels people RACIST for any old disingenuous reason you feel like. You are targeting them for violence. You call out to the mob and they will try to destroy people any way they can financially, physically, reputation. They show up at peoples homes. They burn houses.They have hospitalized and murdered people and claim to be 100% justified. Despite the vile behavior of the Woke mobs I will not bow. I am against racism the racist 1950s you cry about. where was that racism coming from? Oh yeah the Left. Stop it!!!! If you don't like something be honest about what your problem is instead of targeting them for violence. Are you AFRAID of having to support your beliefs with FACTS instead of just smearing a diverse group of people as racist? You realize millions of people not in your cult are beginning to hear clowns like you make that claim and think oh this idiot just disagrees with people and can't make an argument like an adult.

    Much respect to the lower row of 70/80s classical liberal guys (especially Dennis Kitchen, who published Don Simpson's Megaton Man - Don did a back cover pinup for us recently) and their sensibility regarding the absolute nature of free speech - we need to get back to the spirit of the First Amendment, and be civilized enough not to boo people in public places for being influenced by Crumb. But I will say that there are also different definitions of "bans". There are bans from specific school libraries in a school district, which has been happening in some conservative areas. There are wholesale bans on the ability to sell a comic in stores anywhere in a certain municipality, which was what started the CBLDF. And then, there are also bans from being allowed to sell a comic *worldwide* on certain crowdfunding platforms, which is happening to an entire group of indie creators right now. Which is more egregious? Depends on which faction you ask.

    Excellent talk! However, I don't agree with how much of the accusations of censorship is labeled onto just conservatives. There's plenty that comes from liberal and feminist sides as well.

    • @Taruby
      @Taruby ปีที่แล้ว

      Liberals wouldn't engage in censorship since censorship is authoritarian, the opposite of liberalism. The mistake a lot of people make when they talk about liberals and conservatives is that no human is a 'liberal' or a conservative', you just have opinions about things that are a mix-and-match of conservative and liberal opinions. Like using American politics as an example, a Democrat isn't socially-liberal, you can look at the background of the current president and see that he's very much conservative about a lot of issues. Though, I would agree that blaming conservatives is a poor choice. It's always authoritarians that are the problem, and it's hard cause sometimes an authoritarian policy makes sense.
