GENIUS KID !! Playing NGONI

Moussa Bagayoko playing on a Kid's Ngoni from Wassolon Groove. ISSA DANCE MADOMBA
Issa Sidibe was one of the best dancers in the region on Yanfolila. In retirement, he developed his skills on the kamele n'goni, influenced by the phrases of many ngonifola for whom he played like Yoro Diallo, Satigui Foutakie Sidibe and many others. Dancing is totally part of the game, just like in djembe culture. You will eventually notice a strong connection to hip-hop dance steps, but the W...

Ngoni Funk by Alex Wielemans
I produced this recording in parallel to my tutorial about An te wa dunya. The concept was to make people aware of the fact that the Kamele ngoni is the most funky harp ever. The first part is traditional phrases that I learned from my master, Issa Sidibe. The second part is personal phrases based on my improvisations. I added one of the beats that I use for my practice to accentuate the obviou...
Ngoni Wassolou: An te wa dunya recorded by Alex Wielemans
This is one of the oldest rhythms of the Wassolou foli, interpreted in this case by Issa Diallo. It's a more party song, the meaning is basically something like :"Let's go to the world, the singer of the Wassolon came to greet you" with some variations in the lyrics. This is a recording I did in Yanfolila in 2017 and as it was part of one of my free tutorials here, I thought that if would be a ...
3- Ngoni Tutorial: An te wa dunya, intermediate level, Wassolou ngoni
One of the oldest kamelengoni grooves. Wassolon is the birthplace of kamelenogni as well as the culture of the djembe. This is the traditional style which is still very much in use in Mali with international artists such as Oumou Sangaré. The rhythmic approach is possibly a little more complicated than the Bobo style that Westerners generally study, but it is also a gold mine of knowledge for l...
Bassan: Tribute to Satigui Foukatie Sidibe by Alex Wielemans
Satigui "Foukatie" Sidibe was part of the second generation of ngoni players in Wassolon. He used to be one of the famous singer of his generation. I had the chance to record him in 2016 as part of my studies. I couldn't find anyone in Yanfolila that was able to play Bassan, one of my favourite rhythms (I even made a workshop about it), so my master, Issa Sidibe, asked Satigui to come from the ...

I really love african music too, especially N'goni, it's so similar to my music in Indonesia, in Karo Tribe (North Sumatra) we called our instrument as "Kulcapi", hey I think our anchestor is same, love music, have shamans, and we have the mask dance too, peace from Indonesia. j'ai trop aimer votre groupes que dieu soit avec vous pour toujours
Hi Alex, thank you for all the wonderful content, I really appreciate it. I saw that someone else asked about the tuning before, I also learned to tune A C D G E, my question is, which tuning is more common? I read that you tune it with the F to relate with the Kora, but are most of the traditional N'goni rhythms using the tuning with the F, or the E? Thank you.
Hi there, there's no particular rule, it mostly depends either on the instrument or the singer you're playing with. I play kora, so F major (I'll continue in minor mode, so D minor pentatonic) make more sense for me. My master have one ngoni in A that he adjust a bit lower and higher depending on the singer and another one in D (like mine). Yoro Diallo also play D on some recordings. In Burkina, they play with the bala pentatonic, so mostly B or F# minor, Oumou Sangare have some songs where the bass string of the 6 strings is in C... As you see, there's no precise rule, it's more a matter of purpose or sound. Hope it helps, Alex
@@WassolonGroove Thank you very much for the clarification, I appreciate it. and much respect for spreading knowledge and awareness for this beautiful instrument and culture.

Very nice tutorial, easy to folliw and understand
@@WassolonGroove Merci beaucoup Alex. It seems to me this tuning its difrent from the burkinabe right?can someone tell me the keys??
Hey Nelson, Alex here. Both tuning are pentatonic. Burkina is mostly tuning the bala to be able to play with keyboards, and put mostly the main tone on Major or Minor scale. Ngoni in Burkina doesn't play traditional kamele ngoni but balafon repertory. Wassolon is the original kamelengoni. In this case, the guys play in A, but the second is half tone lower compare to a basic A minor, in this case ABDEGA. That say, they don't tune 440hz and they don't tune 'keyboard'. The second is nearly a quarter tone lower, not sure about the others but u can tune by ears. If you like to dig the phrases, I've a full video workshop about this rhythm. Bless, Alex

Thanks, Kelsey, hope you'll appreciate the video we just send to you... ;)
Is this tuning specific to this song or do you always keep the kora tuned like this? Thank you
F for the bass is the most common. Usually the basic pitch is between E and G depending on the player. For traditional there's 3 different tuning, from F lydian in this case F G A B C D E F, second tuning F G A Bb C D E F and tomora with F G A Bb C D Eb F. Traditionally, the tuning depend on the song played, but some song can be played on different position depending on the singer. Nowadays, people experience with many different tuning such as Hijaz for example that give different flavor. Most important for me is the traditional polyphonic technique that gives a real content, diversity and can be interpreted in an infinity of ways...
