Spiritual Life: East and West - The Mother
Whatever difference there is between the West and the East in relation to spiritual life lies not in the inner being or nature, which is an invariable and constant thing, but in the mental habits, in the modes of outer expression and presentation which are the result of education and environment and other external conditions. All people, whether occidental or oriental, are alike in their deepest feelings; they are different in their way of thinking. Sincerity, for example, is a quality which is the same everywhere. Those who are sincere, to whichever nation they belong, are all sincere in the same way. Only the forms given to this sincerity vary. The mind works in different ways in different peoples, but the heart is the same everywhere; the heart is a much truer reality, and the differences belong to the superficial parts. As soon as you go deep enough, you meet something that is one in all. All meet in the Divine. The sun is the symbol of the Divine in the physical nature. Clouds may modify its appearance, but when they are no longer there, you see it is the same sun always and everywhere.
If you cannot feel one with somebody, it means you have not gone deep enough in your feeling.

Respected RY Deshpande Ji, Your talk was profoundly moving and filled with rare insights into the sacred atmosphere of the Ashram and the transformative journey you began in Pondicherry. It is a privilege to hear your accounts of meeting the Mother, interacting with luminaries such as Amal Kiran and Nirod-da, and discussing *Savitri* with Nirod-da in the very verandah of Sri Aurobindo’s room-the sanctum where the supramental Light was anchored. Your statement, *“The supramental change is a thing decreed and inevitable,”* reverberates with Sri Aurobindo’s vision of the evolutionary ascent of earth-consciousness. As you so beautifully explained, this change is not merely an abstract ideal but a process that requires the call from below, the sanction from above, and the dynamic mediation of the Divine Mother’s power. It is Her force alone that can rend the veils of ignorance and bring the Truth-Light into the depths of falsehood and suffering. Your reflections remind us that the Integral Yoga is not a finished teaching of the past but a living and ongoing process-one that demands our openness, faith, and surrender to the supramental consciousness. Through your poetic sensibility and your intimate connection to this sacred work, you inspire us to recognise and not deny the Light when it comes.
