The Boardgames Chronicle
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 มิ.ย. 2007
My name is Michael, I am based in Warsaw, Poland and I have been playing board games since my youth, being firstly attracted to strategy and economy themed ones. As I always loved history it was only matter of time before I finally drifted towards my preferred type, i.e. Historical Wargames.
That passion of mine urged me to express my hobby in more tangible way, thus The Boardgames Chronicle (theboardgameschronicle.com) blog was created. Now I am both happy wargames player and content creator who enjoys replying - and possibly changing - the history.

Thanks for excellent video - bought this and the Alexander version after watching your video!
Glad to be an inspiration! Indeed, system is great - just need some experience to be fluent with it :)
@@mk20336 After getting the hang of EFS with AGC (Barbarossa) I'm looking forward to these now I know a little about how the 'hex and counter' games work! Icing-0n-the-cake ----- they both arrived brand-new in their cellophane about 10 minutes ago! Going to be a busy evening I think! Thanks again for your help and indeed inspiration, please keep-up the good work.
I received my kickstarter copy last week. Thanks for doing this unboxing. I am waiting for a time to unbox this extra large game with my grandson.
Indeed, a lot of content and material inside. So hopefully also hours of fun playing!
Which game is batter in You opinion? Stalingra or Callisto? I would like to buy one but I can't decide. I played Normandy and North Africa and I enjoy it
My humble opinion? (I know not everybody will agree). While Stalingrad has elements of "legacy" and Callisto had all scenarios independent, the former is sometimes so much imbalanced and not fun to play. I would go for Callisto!
Thanks for the playthrough. It's a great game system.
Indeed, great system which by many is treated as too overwhelming; I hope I was able to present it does not have to be treated that way :)
Thanks for the unboxing. Great system. This expansion looks very interesting. I'm looking forward to your playthrough.
I am so glad we get this expansion in the end; and definitely will be working on materials to present this in action!
I enjoy all of the C&C system games. They are great to teach new players or when you don't have a lot of time or table space for a wargame. Thank you for the video.
This is my feeling too - aside from straightforward rules, they are also very attractive from components / graphics perspective and easily grab attention of players.
Looking forward to Part 2.
A lot will happen then :)
If I missed the Kickstarter is there a way to get this at a reasonable price? I mentioned it to my game group and they were very interested.
You can get it from NAC Wargames site: nacwargames.com/shop/ They have shops both in Europe and US/Canada.
This is good because a player really gets to ‘wear the shoes’ of the perpetrators/enablers of a genocide Perhaps the publisher could gift a few copies to the outgoing and incoming administrations? Sure to be some eager roleplayers there
That game reminds of title like "Mafia" or similar. Nobody is good in them, there are no positive characters. Still, one tries to understand how such organization could work, survive and sometimes even thrive.
@@mk20336 I guess it comes down to subjective notions of what constitutes bad taste. This game does, in my view. The culture obviously supports it, so I think it’s only a matter of time before a game company like this one (most likely European because you wouldn’t see a US publisher caught dead publishing a game with this subject matter - nothing to do with “woke”) sees fit to put out a game like “The Other Side of the Tunnel” where players can choose between playing as an IDF commander tasked with demolishing and ethnically-cleansing Gaza, or as a Hamas militant carrying out the Oct. 7 massacres. No doubt such a title would be “gaming goodness” for many eager roleplayer types in the community who really enjoy “inhabiting the role” of mass murderers

Great playthrough
Thank y9ou - my pleasure!
This manual felt needlessly circuitous for what turned out to be a pretty simple ruleset. Your explanation is clear and succinct. Excellent. Thanks!
Thanks; hope you enjoy the game!
Does the tribal have an even chance to win this battle? :)
Very difficult for them; even without Caesar Rome has decent advantage. Still, very good as a training scenario.
What tray did you use to store the pieces

Hi, thank you very much for this video. I would be happy to see more. :) I am new to the game and started studying a few days ago, but what makes me struggle is line composition and line command, so unintuitive :). My question is, in 55:XX minute, are you able to issue line commands with the momentum leader? First, you did a momentum check, successfully, but I didn't note the check for Line command in momentum orders(which must be less than the TC initiative). Second, can you move all the units? You had no "consecutive" line of adjacent units I think. But once again, you can not imagine how your videos are helpful :)
Thank you so much for kind words; as for your observations - I do not have rules / scenario set-up handy but let me try to answer from top of my head: 1) for Line Command, I definitely should roll the TQ check in momentum to see if I can do it; in the heat of the battle such things happen, and when you play solo, there is no opponent to point that out to you 2) as for the Line Command composition, it depends on units; sometimes there might be interval of 1-2 hexes between the units (oftentimes skirmishers) and still count as the line. As said, I do not have scenario details but please check what does it say about line command eligibility and then cross check the rules how it would work for particular type of the unit.
Just got this as a Christmas present, so looking forward to playing it, thanks for the video 👍
Great news - this is fantastic title! There will be Part 2, when I am going to actually play this game :)
Your starting setup is different from the scenarios book (you have Gaul cavalry all on the left, the scenarios book has it divided on both flanks). Is that some errata?
No errata here. Please look at the description of the set-up. It says -for barbarian cavalry (BC) - that it can be placed up to 2 hexes from 1100. I preferred to have them grouped in one place, rather than split.
It's been a long time since I've seen such an obnoxiously released game. The beautiful board from the second edition (for idiots with colors on one side, for normal players with a physical map) has been turned into some simplified schematic nightmare. The box cover is said to take its design from black or red figure ceramics. Not that era, but students at the academy of fine arts probably don't know that (they reportedly advised the publishers). And all they had to do was look at Etruscan painting and take their cues from it. The cards are a separate picture of despair. Not the prettiest cards, but containing illustrations supposedly from the period, were turned into schematic icons. It's apparent that the whole game is probably aimed at clueless players who don't want to know what the era is, find it difficult to decipher the icons on the card (as in the original) and are irritated by, for example, the silhouette of a legionary. Really? Do you really want that? Does it really cause you pain to have a beautiful picture on the card? You can see what kind of audience (indiscriminate) the publisher expects (i.e. a wide circle of whoever will buy counts?) and that the most important thing is not the beauty of the past and showing it, but simplicity, speed and plastic. Very sad.
Yes, I observed that new approach to graphics sparked a lot of discussion. I have not had occasion to play earlier version to be able to fully compare those.
Great video. Just in case, after reaction facing change, inactive player is able to conduct entry reaction fire(27:14).
oh yes, you are completely right. let us assume, for the sake of the gameplay, that they did not react on time :)
I loved the first Assault game. One of my favorite wargames now. This looks just as good. I can't wait until it arrives.
It is great evolution with regards to the rules and quality of components; you will have a lot of fun with it!
Soon it is there. Wish you a lot of fun😊
I can’t believe I’ve had this game for years and never played it! My table isn’t big enough for all maps though.
Definitely try it; system is not complicated and some smaller scenarios are easily manageable! Good luck!
42: minutes in, I think you gave the orc gold to the dwarves
Lol, you are 100% right! Sorry, when you play two handed, in heat of the battle, mistakes occur. Still, I hope you enjoyed the video!
I was so hyped about this game until I saw this video. I see you know how to demotivate people...
Well, that was definitely not my intention :) Can you please explain more?
I like the look and feel of this game.
My impression too! Soon I will bring it to the table and be able to share more info about it.
Thanks Michael! Merry Christmas! -Chris
Thank you Chris - Merry Christmas!
I know the rules say you lost (based on points) but you took the island. In my book you won! Lol
Thankyou so much. Indeed, I had a lot of satisfaction with clearing the island!
Thanks for the demonstration - I was very curious about this game!
Thank you, glad to be of help. Btw, the third installment in the series is already in works: Berlin: The Fall of the Reich, 1945 (talk.consimworld.com/WebX?14@@.1de6fe05/0). And if you would like to see the first game published within the system, here it is: Stalingrad: Advance to the Volga, 1942(th-cam.com/video/V-uIJLImakE/w-d-xo.html)
Being an older gamer with vision issues, i appreciate a rule book with large text. The game looks great as well. This is a purchase for me. Thanks!
Thanks! Indeed, the game is fun! You can see some gameplay examples here: th-cam.com/video/wnwpGsTpioE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_8wyQKeBgOJnRHle and here: th-cam.com/video/lPc7Qi5zrqo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=D7LR68mUKPhiuJL9. Enjoy!
You could use provenzano loot to feed siena podesta and spare the coins :)
Indeed; such mistakes - or simply, overlooking the opportunities - happens from time to time in the heat of the battle!
the cover looks so damn good.
Indeed, Nils Johansson does his job splendidly!
Good overview! I’ve been trying to ignore their emails but this art style is so good I might have to buy anyway. How do you feel about the differences between this and the Hamilcar portion of Phalanx’s Hannibal and Hamilcar?
Regarding differences, two main will be deck building concept in Hand sin the Sea as well as completely different battle resolution. Some things will be similar, however there is a lot of differences.
I would say that while they are the same topic, they are very different games. Hamilcar is a more traditional CDG where you are using cards to move forces around the map, add to those forces or flip allegiance of locations. Hands in the Sea is more abstract in that you are largely trying to deck build to have the right cards in your hand to be able to take certain actions like settling, develop, fortify, or attack a certain location. Forces if I remember are on the cards in your hand and less tangible than the on map pieces in Hamilcar.
Wonder if the darker board was to represent the Mediterranean as Homer described it: " the wine dark sea."
@@Phillybrarian I have a feeling it was rather in connection with Greet art style - do not remember the name now, but the one with mainly back and orange/red colors.
Thanks for a very useful video!
Glad it was helpful! Love the system and you might be sure to get more such materials for future installments.
always better to wait for the sequel game of any series. the first iteration is always the Beta. Then follows the user comments and designer corrections.
It is always welcoming when designer / publisher responds to the community suggestions.
@@A._J_. yes. With the publishing of Red Horizon 41. We started to collect feedback... and we learnt a lot of course. So we added a lot i to the v2.0 ruleset... we will bring back Red Horizon 41 as a revised Edition with one of our next projects.
This is certainly not true for GMT's Combat Commander series. 🙂
@@assaultgames167 Definitely interested in the 2nd Edition of Red Horizon 41! 🤩
@@carlparadis6735 That also true cause Chad Jensen was such a wonderful designer, who made sure his games are top quality rules wise!
Thanks a lot for your support in our hobby. Well done. I look forward for more deep dive
Thanks for creating great system and bringing it u p to a new level with this new installment!
Ulala pięknie !!
Oj tak, zawartości jest tutaj na dziesiątki godzin grania :)
@@mk20336 rewelka! Będzie w co grać przy najbliższej okazji 👏
@@kolosm100 Zdecydowanie tak!
great video, i'm now learning the game as well. when you rolled the critical hit, you rolled and cross-referenced on the combat table. for a critical hit, you refer the critical hit table 0-5 is no hits, 6-7 is one hit, 8 is two hits and 9 is three. the two that you rolled would have done nothing, but if you had rolled a 9, you'd have destroyed the fortification completely.
I believe you are right; I have not played for some time, but most rules are pretty straightforward.
Awesome playthrough, Michal! Thank you so much for doing this. And what a domination at Chaeronea. ⚔
Thank you! Always great fun playing Arete!
Game looks great! Any chance you will port it to pc?
@@alexy590 Probably question to Bill :)
@@alexy590 Thank you! I'm still on the fence about it because I really designed it for touch screens, but a lot of people have asked so I'm starting to warm up to the idea. Can't promise, but maybe?
Terrific example of the advanced game Michael! Thank you! My only observations are strategic… first, remember to build more heroes (in the south for your game) so that you can get the most out of your Magic. Second, both dwarven blessings were game changers! You could have used Dark Paths to defend a far-flung settlement on turn 1. Khazud can be used to build units when it arrives. With all your gold, you could have revealed Khazud then swarmed that weakened Dire Raven in your rear. Regardless, that’s the fun… learning to optimize play in the advanced game vs the basic game. Looking forward to your next video! -Chris
Hi Christopher, thank you for kind words. I agree, that might not be strategically optimal example of play (hard to cover everything playing two-hands). Still, my goal was to show mechanics, beauty and tension of that great game. And I hope I succeeded!
You did a beautiful job. Very clear and fun to watch. Bravo!
Uhh great 🤩 I'm excited to see more of this good looking game! Thank you for your work
Glad you enjoy it! I am having fun playing it on all possible configurations - solo, 2 player or 3-4.
Appreciate it!
My pleasure! The game is simply great, hits the table often and gives a lot of fun!
Remston is not adjacent to Nottingham.
I explained it so many times to my co-players and succumbed to this very error...
Great Play!😊
Thanks! Close scenario for both sides!
Thanks for this - the games looks great. Especially for historical games I often read the design notes first to help give a context to the history and why the designer made certain choices. I often think it then helps me to learn the rules.
Indeed, the game looks astonishing. I also agree that designer notes like an insight into what the designer planned - sometimes explain the choices made which might not be so obvious at the onset.
26:26 I think you can only search for a TF once in the movement phase, 24.3.3.B
Indeed, my mistake in the heat of the battle!
Thanks a lot! I noticed that Cube4me's website didn't have information on dividing the cards over the card trays. I figured some of them out myself, but you've helped me further reduce setup time.
Really good videoa thank you! I have never seen Averni win only 3 games played so far.
It is very tough for them; I hope you will see their victory in the future!
23:50 Sneaking M.M. into submissive parishes where number of M.M. and Henchmen is greater than three flips M.M. So Tuxford would not flip the one M.M. when it only has two Henchmen. Great strategy tips for playing the Sheriff. Looking forward to your strategies on Robin Hood.
Ah, good catch! Indeed, this is basic COIN mechanic which escaped me in the heat of the battle :)
PS. For Robin Hood you can find some of my ideas here: th-cam.com/video/W3LEcFcExnQ/w-d-xo.html
Bardzo ciekawa gra 😊
To prawda, świetnie przeniesiona gra wojenna na komputer!
One of my favorite games these days ❤️ it's always great to so and hear thoughts about the strategy 👍
Thank you; asymmetry in this title really forces you to look at and play each side differently.
GMT quality prevails across the game. Took my time preparing the Lord tokens and the popping out the the other tokens. Sleeved the cards and ordered the tray from Cube4me. Theres no point investing without looking after the investment. There's a lot of cross referencing to begin with, especially understanding the challenge, recoup resupply and draw /plan across the phases. Am now working through the solo aspects to understand how it clicks together. Seems good so far and no glitches. Seems to have been well play tested as with other GMTs Navaho Hunters and Twilight. Recommended
This looks like a game that plays better if components are ordered, grouped and sorted, which can be stored and contained next to the board. The trays will do this as well as protecting the pieces and cards themselves.
Hi! This is exactly the situation - the set not only sorts and stores the components; they trays can be used during the game to have all the pieces handy.
