Our 2025 resolution is the same as our 2024 resolution, which is to get this place cleaned up. We inherited the place and all the piles of stuff that were on it. To be fair, I've found some pretty cool stuff in those piles, but most of it is junk. Added to that, we had it logged and now we have tree tops that need to be cut and cleared. Our storm shelter is built onto the end of the house. The downstairs, back of the house is built into the hillside and on one end is a cement block room that has a cement ceiling. We walk into it from our living room, it has a second door that opens to the lower porch. We have only gone into it to "hunker down" once, with our pets etc. Mike and I both love to watch and listen to the storms, so most of the time, when the big storms roll in, we are out on the porch. Tomorrow is looking like we may have some severe weather. I hope you can find a way to stabilize your studio (and that you film the process). Happy New Year!
What's the rush? You're going to be there for many years, take it easy and enjoy the process, don't get burned out
I like how they managed to hide the wheels..!
You've got this! But it doesn't need to all be done tomorrow. Life is about the journey , not the destination .
It's in one piece, You can fix it. But, yeah kind of a pain.
We are looking at adding another 20 acres as a buffer. It's crazy how fast this wilderness area is being developed ! Pour some footers with 6 by 6 posts?
Merry Christmas from Mr. Garry and Mrs. Betty!
Merry Christmas too!
We are spending Christmas week at the cabin and will see all of our grown kids. Sitting by the outdoor fire ring watching your hike. That is a good one. Merry Christmas!
We were going to hike tomorrow but 90% chance of a cold rain, so maybe not. It does make the waterfalls spectacular, so maybe.
yea we went to Tim Ernst's gallery today since it was raining. Another cool place you would never expect out here.
@HomesteadReliance We have hiked every fall in his books. He came to our town one year and spoke at our college. We have not been to his gallery.
@ the gallery is really cool. Very unexpected location but really cool
Thank you for sharing! Inspiring for me - as I am looking for my homestead!
Thanks again!
Thank you for sharing! Inspiring for me - as I am looking for my homestead!
It’s great to hear you are looking! We love our homestead! The search and can be so hard, but well worth it! Good luck and thanks for watching!
When I finally get completely moved in at my place my wife and I will go for hikes. Where was this? Have you seen many snakes? And, I see people talking about hybrid wolves in the area. Oh, Merry Christmas.
This is the best time to go hiking! This is right in Ponca called the Lost Valley Trailhead. Super easy to get go and really nice. No snakes for a few months. Guessing it's too cold for them now. No hybrid wolves yet on my cameras. Only deer so far on the game cameras. Merry Christmas too!
@ Ponca! I’ve heard a lot about. Sounds good.
You guys have made your cabin look great! The hike looked like a lot of fun also. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too! Hope you have a great holiday season! Yes loving the hiking this time of the year!
Merry Christmas🎅 Love the waterfall😎 The homestead is looking awesome.👊
Merry Christmas to you as well! It's been a great year for us on the homestead. Lots of work but worth it! Thanks again!
Merry Christmas from Me and Mike! We got the house decorated and lit, outside and in, now I need to finish my baking. It's gonna be a small one this year but we will still enjoy it. We're kicking it off tomorrow night with Christmas movies. I've been meaning to ask you if you've seen the youtube channel, Gridlessness. They are a favorite of mine.
I hope you have a great Christmas too! I'll have to check out that channel. I just took a peak at it and it looks good. Yes it's going to be a small Christmas for Jen and I. We celebrated with family over thanksgiving. We are planning a hike it weather is ok. I'll have to check out some good movies for Christmas. I still love die hard but Jenny does not think it's appropriate.
Arkansas looks like there's a lot of great places to explore.
it's crazy how many cool outdoor places are so close to where we live right now. All of them free too!
😮
thanks for watching?
Wow! Your pantry is really impressive! I do like to can stuff in season. I don't have a large pantry, but bought 3 cases of progressive soup last month when it was $1 a can. I gave one case to an uncle and one to a single cousin. I just held onto the last case...but make my own soup. well, I got Cov last week and dipped into those 12 cans because I couldn't cook....sometimes the maybe stuff in the pantry pays off.
It’s great that you were able to help your family out with those soups and yourself! This is why we prep! thanks again!
This was very informative. I'm not at the homesteading point yet. Husband and I are in the suburbs for now due to family and career responsibilities. When we retire in a few years we'll move to a more rural area to homestead. For now, I'm accumulating knowledge, skills and of course, preps.
That is great! It’s never too early to start! Having moved stuff we already owned helped us so much. The less you have to buy when you retire will be a big help!
I would consider us to be a good mix of homesteader/farmer and prepper. We are by No means completely self sufficient but we do raise quite a bit of our own food/meat. When I get my greenhouse built we will be growing even more. It's just two of us so that makes it much easier too.
We are the same but currently less farmer due to the move. Luckily we put away tons of stuff from the hold place. We too are planning a green house! I love the prepping community but at the same time the simplicity of the homesteading life. I at times get attracted to the gear and movies (like I can't wait to watch the movie Homestead)
@@HomesteadReliance I've never even heard of the movie "Homestead" is it coming to theaters or Netflix or someplace else? We both enjoy some of the prepping stuff as well. We don't go hugely overboard, or at least we don't think so, we just make sure we have back ups to stuff.
it's from Angel studios and it's coming to some select theaters. One in Harrison is going to have it. I'm going to wait for stream or DVD. We are the same with backups as the mantra from the military is always there " two is one, and one is none". here is the link to the movie and TH-cam has some trailers too www.angel.com/movies/homestead
Property tax should be eliminated at retirement age. It still feels like you are renting the land because property taxes have to be budgeted even though your property/vehicles are paid for. Great video breakdown of homesteading and prepping.
I agree fully! We are just the current tenants on our government rented property sadly. We can never be fully free here. Thanks for watching!
Im off grid with solar which is not reliable..we rely on fuel for the generator when the batteries are dead for solar.. Is hard work.. Not easy..
It is definitely a lot of work to be off grid and solar can be tricky! We had to double our battery capacity that we had at our old homestead to make it through winter. The good thing in the ozarks we have a lot more sun in winter than Wisconsin had. Without our huge battery bank we would need a generator. We get a lot of wind and were looking at a wind generator too in the future.
Good thought provoking information !! Thanks !
Thanks for watching!
Lightning hit a tree 90 feet from where I was standing outside our cabin the other day. Was so bright and so loud my ears were ringing for hours.
The other day I heard lightning right after the flash. It was danger close. That can be scary! At least I was inside. Glad you're ok.
Agreed, having zero debt is a wonderful feeling of freedom!
It's a great feeling for sure! Unfortunately the way things are going when we need a new vehicle that will probably change. I sold my old 2007 FJ cruiser in 2017 for $9000 with 200k miles after owning for 10 years (paid 26k new). I wanted to get another one and they are over $25k for ones with over 200k miles. 4runners are the same. There is no more affordable body on frame 4x4' SUV's anymore. We will have to live like paupers just to put away money for when a newer vehicle is needed.
either way the only way to prep or homestead is work towards being dept free
Very true!
I make sure to keep an inventory of my pantry
Great idea!
Your are right on all your points. But being self sufficient is a fantasy unless your the top 1 percent who can afford to buy all the stuff you really need. I am around amish everyday they are not self sufficient and they are as close to self sufficient people we have today. TH-cam preppers and off grid people are content creators nothing more take there money and TH-cam away they disappear. You are a logical person not like other channels . This is not addressed to you . Just my opinion only.
Wrong, it’s possible to be self sufficient. I know how to grow 100% of my own food. I don’t need electricity or internet either it’s an unnecessary luxury
Yes and know. I know some subsistence homesteaders who do it and trade for what they can't produce. I would not want to live like that though. As stated in the video I like some items that we can't make and some luxuries (solar and battery so we live like regular Americans) It's possible but I would not want to struggle that much. I agree Most content creators do it for the view. I would not do TH-cam at all if I did not like it. I could make more money selling firewood to campers and take less time. We limit what we need. It's been two weeks and we are making a Walmart run this week. I "want" ice cream, Starbucks cafe mocha in a jug, half and half (when we have guest that don't want goat milk for their coffee) and some more comfort food. Thanks for calling me a logical person! Always like chatting with like minded people on here!
I agree with this but would not want to live like that. We like our little luxuries.
I Love stopping in there for a cup of coffee on my way South
I liked it . The coffee was great though and when going south I stop too! Jenny doesn't drink coffee only teas. There is another good coffee place in Leslie (and a really good restaurant too)
Nice presentation!! A well stocked pantry and well organized.
Thank you so much! I’m always trying to be more organized! Thanks again!
I have the same setup as you have. It is so fun to shoot. Talk about silent, like the sound of a hand stapler.
It is such a cool setup! I use it all the time! I do like the new model of rugers that take down easier though.
Cool video, thanks.
Glad you liked it! Hope to do more fun videos once settled in a bit more!
@@HomesteadReliance Thanks. I carry a Keltec P17, which is threaded but I don't have a suppressor yet.
once you get a suppressor you will love it! Game changer!
My parents were Depression Era babies who were teens during the food rationing of WWII. They always practiced putting away some foods, although they weren't into canning. I have continued the tradition and added vacuum sealing. I've been through two medical incidents that prevented me from going to the supermarket, and my pantry really helped out! Recently I purchased a Greenstalk planter and next spring I will start a small garden; focusing on green beans, collards, spinach and herbs. That will supplement my pantry stores that include canned corn, string beans and beans 🫘 Looking forward to it. 😊
It's great to have the pantry as backup! Glad to hear it's helped you! I love to hear stories like yours as both my parents were also too. We are working on our gardens now and it's a challenge on top of this mountain. We had great soil in Wisconsin and here it's something (mostly rock and sand). I'm curious how that Greenstalk planter works out for you. We are tying modified Hügelkultur for the garden. Not sure if it will work. Thanks again!
Thanks!
Thank you so much! Hope this episode was helpful to you! Thanks again so much!
Nice pantry, great tips.
Thank you, It's a work in progress, but we are happy with it! Thanks again for watching!
We had hornets start a hive on our front door!
oh wow. They have not gotten in the office since I taped the seams. I think the nest is in the roof or soffits and they crawl down the corner voids to the heat of the office. The dog was barking at one of the corners a few times too after I taped it. I thought I heard sound in there too. I ordered a tool to remove the staples that are holding the 1/4 plywood wall coverings and I plan on opening it up on the next cold day.
Wow, that breaker box looks like a bowl of spaghetti!
lol yes it does! I have some work ahead of me!
That's a couple of great items to have around.
they are! I can't believe it took me so long to the get voltage tester. Inspection cameras I used to use at work all the time and when the price came down I got one. Lots of properties we looked at had exposed wires and such and I didn't know if they were hot or not. This property was no exception.
Great video very nice pantry well stocked, we have been on our homestead for over 45 years. Your exactly right about everyone’s pantry being different .We stock a lot of flour, wheat, rolled oats, barley, rice, salt, sugar, sorghums, lots of beans, nonfat milk powder, whole milk powder, canned milk, cream. No freeze dryer yet. I wish. For your meat I learned many years ago if you brown pork or beef just cook it 1/2-2/3 done it gives it a much better smell look and the taste and texture is more like fresh. I do pork loins in medallions and cubes for different meals. One other thing that has saved us thousands of dollars is going through our grocery receipts each January deciding what we won’t buy but grow and make ourselves . We make all of our condiments now and can them or dehydrate the ingredients if it can’t be canned safely. I also make all of our yeast bread items from scratch.we raise our popcorn, dent corn for grinding, peanuts, dried beans. I can a lot of our beans like chili beans, pork n beans, baked beans. We also keep storebought cans of meats, veg, fruits for longer term storage. We believe in backups for our backups just to be safe. We have severe ice storms the last one left us 31 days without electricity and water roads impassable for over a week. I grew up here raised by parents on a farm who were both born in the 1929’s went through the Great Depression and ww2 food rationing my dad was away in the war mom had to feed my oldest brother. They taught us to be as self reliant as possible. I love watching others to get new ideas. I believe that I can learn even though I’ve been doing it for near 50 years. Thank you for the video it was great.
Thanks so much for this great comment! I love hearing things like this. I'm having my wife read this too as she does all the canning. I love the idea of doing our own condiments someday. They are putting high fructose corn syrup in everything. We originally bought the freeze dryer only for the goat milk as my wife did not like the texture of canned milk. It does so much more. I always tell people find a neighbor or a friend with one and they will help you out. The price is still pretty high for one. I hope someday being self reliant is normal again. People like us who were raised with it are not the normal nowadays. I tool love watching others to learn. Thanks again!
At one point when we were raising our kids, our garden was about 2 acres. My husband worked, and I did the gardening and canning. The only things we bought were things like flour, some bread, oil, oatmeal, rice, some meat, milk, etc. All vege- were grown and things like sauerkraut and pickles came from garden.
Love this! We are working on getting as close to this as possible! Jenny even has a grain mill to make her own gluten free flour too if needed.
🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸👷🏻♂️Great Tour of your pantry. Here, at The Ole Church, we are actually constructing a Pantry! Stay tuned!
I just subscribed and can't wait to see your pantry!
🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸👷🏻♂️Hey Brother, Prepping is so IMPORTANT! Like you we made the Big Move too!
Prepping is important and a way of life for us (and probably you too) Yes the big move was rough but worth it!
Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome! We are still prepping and learning! Thanks again for watching!
First time seeing your channel. Lots of good info. Thanks ill watch more. 😊
Sorry to say this but jarred food MUST BE KEPT IN THE DARK. You can hang thick curtains on the windows that do not let the light through.
We do have black out curtains (took them down for filming to get better light) We try to control light and temp as best we can. Thanks
Love your pantry tour.
Glad you liked it! It's still a work in progress. Thanks again!
I would take the screw lids off your canned jars. The screw lids can give a false closure. I saw you had a metal sheet on top of your lids. I won't stack jars on jars. Again false closure.
Thanks for the Tips on false closures and the need to take the screw lids off! As to the other ones ,those were not metals sheets. They are the thin plastic sheets made for the shelves. We have another metal shelf in storage and didn't have the space to store them yet when I filmed (working on that today). Putting that other shelf together today.
Great pantry and video! And I love to see what people cook with their canned food. Subscribed!
Thank you for subscribing! Glad you liked the food content! Thanks!
Stunningly beautiful canning and grocery pantry!❤Awesome video,Filipino-Canadians watching here from BC Canada!
Glad you liked the pantry! We love BC Canada too!
Know your sheriff, know they can't be trusted
Hopefully you can trust them a bit! If not that wouldn’t be good but I see what you are saying! The more I read your comment, the more it resonates! Thanks!
This is next level. You sir, are well prepared for almost anything. Great timing of the video as well..especially with the unexplained spy drones everywhere.
I hope We are prepared! We are working hard to build this homestead and you never know what will come next. My early retirement hit us a little hard and this pantry really helped!
