It's more intended to send a signal to people planning to buy property in Spain and make money out of it. With the current government, it will become very, very difficult to do that...and it won't matter whether you are from the EU or not...

Spain is being bought out by rich foreigners, foreign companies and governments to profit from driving up prices and reselling. Money laundering is also an anterior motive here. The new proposed law must target these groups not the average retiree.

Ridiculous if it becomes law. The main purchasers in Spain are from Scandinavia, Holland and other Northern European countries (some also from East Europe). I thought you decided to leave Spain?

If I understand correctly, being aimed at non-resident and non-European, the tax would not apply to non European people who choose to become Spanish residents despite being non-European (UK, USA & CDN for the most part). That appears to be a very small pool of people and will have minimal impact. Plus it may reduce tourism, which ahs been an important part of the economic growth of Spain. I think you previously mentioned that you moved to Spain and did become a resident so it would not apply to you if you had purchased real estate and I do not think too many individuals wish to own real estate and not reside there full time (perhaps a few wealthy people with residences in multiple countries, e.g. middle east money in Marbella). This is a supply demand equation. I think it would be better to address the supply situation. Increased supply would help to get rid of investors and keep rental prices down. Spain is lovely. They got food. They got weather. They got awesome politics. Affordable if you have a rich daddy. Detroit is cheaper though. Dangerous for bald people. They don't speak French. No random crime. They target rich Canadians on a twit visa. Only takes 14 years and a hundred grand immigration lawyer. Spanish officials will instantly approve you. All you need is a few buckets of cash. They hate Americans. Just like Toronto. Non of your electronics will work. Cheap public urinals. Bring your own women. I was treated like a long lost prisoner. Great place for oversize sun glasses.
