    The Jan 1965 issue of Motor Trend tested a fastback with the 271hp Hi-Po, 3.89 gears and close-ratio four-speed. Performance data listed a 0-60 time of 7.6 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.9 seconds at 89 mph. These times sound about right. Motor Trend tested a G.T. 350 in a May 1965 issue and got a 15.7 @ 91 out of it.

      @@PistonTrends Many of the comments should’ve answered that question. You got the GTO with the same engine as the formula, which the latter might even hive the lower final drive running almost a second slower, similar with the demon and other dodge 340. You can’t mishmash your performance data sources, and if you got them from the same source, they’re not accurate. Honestly, the 426 Wedge engines are all more fascinating to me than the 426 Hemi engines. I have always been a fan of the 440 because of its ease of tuning and it can make great power with little effort. The Hemi engines can be temperamental and finicky, and I have personally always wanted to build a 426 Wedge engine over a Hemi. That said, I think the most surprising car on this list has to go to the little Ford Mustang Hi-Po 289. I am a huge GM person, I can be biased and I won't deny that, but in this era? Well, all of the Big Three had amazing engineering going on, and it is awesome to see how quickly Ford stepped the Mustang's game up. I can honestly say I would be happy with ANY of the cars on this list, but to pick just two I would have to say Mustang and GTO 389 Tri-Power.

    • @PistonTrends
      @PistonTrends 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree on the cars, but I have to give the 1st pick to the Mustang. Totally changed the muscle car game and made Chevy scramble to come up with the Camaro…… 3 years later. Luckily it was a massive success!

    I always liked the cross-ram Max Wedge engines 9:40 over the HEMI. The HEMI offered more power and potential of course. But you just can't beat that "bare knuckle" street brawler visual of the Max Wedge's wild cast iron headers and short-ram intake manifold. Well done Chrysler Engineers!

    Back in the early 1980's when Hot Rod magazine was going strong, and when you could actually call and speak to a magazine editor, HR editor John Diana told me that in the 1960's and 1970's, both Car Craft and Hot Rod tested the exact same factory supplied musclecars (one word). Since all pictures of such tests were b&w, no-one ever bothered to question that fact. However, Hot Rod got to test the two cars first since it was Peterson's premier automotive magazine. Car Craft tested the same car afterwards, but ALWAYS was allowed to post a quicker e.t. than found in HR Otherwise, readers wouldn't bother to read the CC test of the same model (while also not realizing that it was indeed the same car HR tested!)! The example he used for this charade was the test of the 1970 LS6 Chevelle found in both HR and CC. . It legitimately ran 13.80 for HR yet months later Car Craft had it running *supposed* 13-teens in their magazine. And check it out ... that time was noted in this video! It was a bogus "test", claimed Dianna. I asked him "how could that be?". He replied "the CCF!" I asked him "what did that mean?". He replied "California Correction Factor!" He added "We had to give the readers something that made them want to buy our magazines. It was for the same reason that you never saw a Buick on the cover of either magazine.". He continued: "For example, that GS Stage 1 was a great musclecar, but really, how many readers owned one or even knew about them." Now you know the rest of the story! Larry Rose

    It really doesnt take alot to get SD cars to break 14 seconds. Especially lighter 4spd ones without A/C. Set 34 to 36 degrees total ignition timing, lighter advance springs to bring all in by around 2800rpms, tweaked secondary air door spring for quicker opening without bog, tune with appropriate primary and secondary metering rods, and smaller '75 and later floats to make room for more fuel in float bowl, set float at 1/4 ". Adjust accelerator pump rod to inner hole. All basic driveway tuning. These changes along with a very, very, mild hydraulic roller cam swap and a 2800 stall converter now has my car running 12.91 at 104.9 mph with a 3:08 gear with performance tranverse muffler, and 2.5" cast iron exhaust manifolds. 750rpm idle at 15" vacuum. Even at only 8.4 to 1 compression ratio stock SD-455 Trans Ams and Formulas were faster than any stock NEW car for many years afterwards. The round port SD heads were all about airflow and not compression. The GNX and ZR-1 finally caught up with them in the late '80s and early '90s.

      @@briansd2772 But no way they ran mid-13's in stock form. Too many road tests have them in the low-14 and even 15 flat. I remember a Motor Trend shootout had the 1973 SD at 15 flat. It was, however, the quickest car in the shootout. Of course, during these comparisons, they probably don't run a car over and over and over to get the best time, more than likely a pass or two. Interestingly, PistonTrends 1972 quickest video had the Formula 455 H.O. at 15.5 and that motor puts out similar power as the SD 455 (actually the H.O is rated 10 HP and 25 lb-ft more than the SD).

      @@justme307 They did not run 13.54 stock. I know because I own one. Mine ran 14.00 at 100mph stock at Cordova Dragway. I believe the 13.54 time was run with the RA4 "T" camshaft that was never used in sold cars.

      @@briansd2772 I've gone back and forth with some folks on that RAIV cam. It was a pre-production engine rated at 310 with that cam. Some folks will say the 310 engine made it to early 73s, but others folks, me included, say it never made it to production and the 73/74 SD were both rated at 290. Had an opportunity to buy a 73 SD TA back in the 80's but at $6k I couldn't afford it. Bought L75 instead for $4k.

    not by a long shot. The ws6 got bastardized and over quoted. WS6 has been around for decades. I have had pontiacs for over 40 years. It was not until SLP was contracted to swap out the hoods and air intake box, that the hooded ws6 package became popular. There were many cars built on order with thw ws6 suspension only.

    I find it odd that the Firebird 455 HO with 300 HP and 415 lb-ft is slower than the heavier GTO with the same motor. Even more odd is that the Z/28 with 255 HP and 280 lb-ft is described as one full second quicker than the Firebird; sure rear gears could be different, but a 3.08 to 4.11 is not a one second difference (just an example). It goes on and on. The 442, GS, Chevelle, all heavier than the Firebird and with engines putting out less HP/torque than the 455 HO are listed as quicker than the Firebird.

    Great feature, but be careful about the 440 Six-Pack/ 6-Barrel reference for '72 Roadrunners. Sadly Chrysler didn't offer that engine option after 1971. It's been speculated that a '72 "GTX" 440 6-Barrel "slipped through" and "things happen". But a great feature and fun look back!
