One man truly stands and both hero and king of recording the history of Basingstoke in photographs and film, and that is Robert Brown. What his pictures jump out and say will always eclipse all written material.

That's ironic.. A lot of the medieval town was lost due to fire. Then they got rid of the last of the of old houses shops and building left to make way for the latest town center ..by fire.

I am a native of Basingstoke. We moved away in 1966 because of the planned development of the town. I remember it as a pleasant market town. I've been back since, and although the fields and countryside still smell like home I'd never move back. The council put a compulsory purchase order on our house in 1964 and we had to leave because we were in the way of developments. The house was demolished, and then the first of hundreds of new Council houses were built in the field opposite our new home. We left.

The signalman meant that he was not expecting the excursion for another four hours. The signalman also had to be in the signal box bright and early to deal with the express and other trains that were passing by.

You are so right Jo Milton - I was part of the london overspill that moved to Basingstoke in1963 (yes I remember that winter) from Hackney when I was aged about 4 years old - my dad loved the new 3 bed house, but my mum hated the area (Dartmouth Walk/Pinkerton Road in South Ham district) and so we then moved back to london in 1965. I remember going into town on occasions by bus to see the old buildings/cottages being demolished = so sad and totally uncalled for.

I was an apprentice at Jacksons from 1965 until 1970 . The main mechanics in the car section being Dave Ketterman , Jim Chapman , Paul Pearman, and John ? George Hough did the PDIs . Frank Ayers was the foreman. Gordon Bell , Brian Bush and Brian Smith in reception . In the stores was Foxy Fowles , Julian Cordery , Reg Austin and Pete Bushnell. "Archie" Andrews was the stores manager .Chic Coulson fitted the tyres." Percy" Pike was the commercials foreman . Happy memories. thouigh we sadly watched the new Basingstoke develop from the flat roof amid the dust of the old red brick market town . Yes do think that top ramp was to allow for an extra floor if needed . Still remember Frank Ayers the foreman standing at the entrance to the worshop at the end of our tea break [ we sat on old oil drums ] and every day he would holler " BUMS OFF YOUR DRUMS , IF YOUVE NOT HAD YOUR TEA YOUVE HAD YOUR TIME " .

Quite sad reading the defeatist comments below considering the UK is one of the richest countries in the world, is the worlds 5th largest exporter of goods and services, militarily number three and the worlds number one financial center but there you go, you can't please everyone. Mustn't grumble.

I àgree. it's sad. But there are many of us that know Britain is still great. Sure we are in trouble due to certain things I will remain quite about. But Britain will rise again, but we can't do it while we are still in the EU..

Vaguely. Was it next to Nicolson's? I liked the old bus station. Always a lot going on there. For a bus station, that is! New one is isolated and dull.

The chip shop was called Stevens right next to the bus station . Best fish and chips in Basingstoke. Who remembers the bus station cafe full of all sorts in 1969 . Wish I could go back, everything so much happier. Never mind still here😂😂

In the early 1960s it was decided that Basingstoke would become a "London overspill town". Disgusted at the prospect we moved. What I returned to in 1984 was a monstrosity. This is the first time I have seen the almost apocalyptic destruction as it unfolded. I know that change is inevitable but this was brutal in the extreme, a Tsunami of 1960s ideology sweeping away both slums & historic buildings and replacing it with characterless impersonal ugliness with nothing whatsoever to commend it.

Hi this is Brian James, born and bred 16-9-1945 in Basingstoke I speak my mind and I do not agree with the basingstokegazette. If Mr Robert Brown is the King, then I must be Basingstoke's King of Pop, and I'm not. I know lots of local people with more recorded history than Mr Brown. These people do not make money out of their FILMS & PHOTO'S, BECAUSE IT WAS THEIR HOBBY..If Mr Brown has given his for free, and has made no money out of his 'HOBBY' then he 'is' a Local Hero in my Book.not King

At around 00:50 it shows South View infant school and the old van in the playground - I have great memories of playing in this dirty, beaten up old thing as a 5/6 year-old. We imagined it was a plane and jump out on our 'parachutes', sometimes it was a house, a cave, a tank, or just a van. I cannot imagine something like this even being considered nowadays in our health and safety culture. Thanks for the video brings back great memories.

Love the fact that the magnificent A4 No2509 Silverlink starts things off. This was a year before it's sister 4468 Mallard took the steam speed to new heights.
