Vitamin derivatives are related molecules that are part of a vitamin. Some examples of vitamin derivatives include:
Folate
A vitamin that helps produce DNA and red blood cells. Low levels of folate can lead to birth defects.
Riboflavin
Also known as vitamin B2, riboflavin is a vitamin that is found in food and sold as a supplement.
Vitamin D derivatives
Vitamin D derivatives like 1α(OH)D3 and eldecalcitol are used as therapeutic agents to maintain calcium and bone homeostasis.
Vitamin E derivatives
Vitamin E derivatives include tocopherols, which are antioxidants that can inhibit carcinogenesis.
Methylcobalamin
The activated form of vitamin B12, methylcobalamin is prescribed to people who have a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Retinol derivatives
Retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid are the three main natural retinoid derivatives of vitamin A.
Other vitamins include:
Vitamin C
Vitamin K
Pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5

Isoenzymes are enzymes that catalyze similar reactions but have different chemical structures and kinetic properties. They are often organ-specific and are used for diagnostic purposes. Examples of isoenzymes Creatine kinase (CK): This enzyme has three forms: CK-BB, CK-MB, and CK-MM. CK-MM is found in the heart and skeletal muscle, CK-MB is found in the heart, and CK-BB is found in the brain an...

Coenzymes are organic molecules that help enzymes function by facilitating biochemical reactions. They are often derived from vitamins and are essential for many metabolic processes. How do coenzymes work? Coenzymes bind to enzymes temporarily or permanently. They can act as carriers of electrons, hydrogen atoms, or chemical groups. They can catalyze reactions, but not as effectively as when co...

Diabetes Also called: diabetes mellitus A group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood (high blood glucose). Most common types Type 2 diabetes A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose). Type 1 diabetes A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Prediabetes A condition in which blood sugar is high, but not high...

Design thinking-based revision is a process that involves refining ideas and testing solutions to a problem. It's a collaborative approach that uses logic, intuition, and imagination to create innovative solutions. Design thinking process Empathize: Research the needs of the users Define: State the problems and needs of the users Ideate: Challenge assumptions and create ideas Prototype: Create ...

Lemierre syndrome (LS), a condition normally seen in young adults, is a rare complication comprising oropharyngeal infection and thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV). Also known as post-anginal sepsis and necrobacillosis, Lemierre syndrome was first described by Andre Lemierre in 1936. Commonly caused by the bacteria F. necrophorum and Fusobacterium nucleatum, the early stages of...

Complement fixation is a medical test that detects the presence of an antigen or antibody in a patient's serum. It's a blood test that measures the reaction between an antigen, antibody, and complement. Here's how the complement fixation test works: The patient's serum is taken. The sample is heated to remove complement proteins. The serum is mixed with washed sheep red blood cells. Antigen and...

Here are some types of antigen-antibody reactions: Precipitation An antibody interacts with a soluble antigen in the presence of an electrolyte to produce a precipitate. Complement fixation Serum complement proteins bind to the antigen-antibody complex, which initiates a series of immune responses. Neutralization A neutralizing antibody prevents an antigen or infectious body from having a biolo...

Immunoglobulin Types and Their Functions The human body only makes five types of immunoglobulins: IgG IgM IgA IgD IgE These immunoglobulins protect the body from multiple types of antigens. All antibodies differ based on their amino acid sequence in the constant region, structure (monomer, pentamer, and dimer), short life in the blood, site, and immunological properties.

Acquired immunity, also known as adaptive immunity, is a type of immunity that develops when the body responds to a foreign substance or microorganism. There are two types of acquired immunity: Active immunity The most common type, which develops when the body responds to a vaccination or infection. Active immunity is long-lasting and takes time to develop, usually several weeks. Passive immuni...

Immune system protects the body from disease through three types of immunity: Innate immunity This immunity is present at birth and includes barriers like skin and mucous membranes to keep harmful substances out. Adaptive immunity This immunity develops when the body is exposed to a disease or vaccinated against it. The body produces antibodies to fight the disease, and this immunity can last a...

Immune system is made up of many cells that gather to protect the body from foreign invaders: White blood cells Also called leukocytes, white blood cells are made in the bone marrow and move throughout the body to find and attack microbes. Some types of white blood cells include: Phagocytes: These cells, like neutrophils and macrophages, chew up invading organisms. Lymphocytes: These cells help...

The immune system is a complex network of organs, cells and proteins that defends the body against infection, whilst protecting the body’s own cells. The immune system keeps a record of every germ (microbe) it has ever defeated so it can recognise and destroy the microbe quickly if it enters the body again. Abnormalities of the immune system can lead to allergic diseases, immunodeficiencies and...
