The Handicap Hunter
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 พ.ย. 2019
On February 27, 2016 I had an accident that led to a three year long limb salvage process. On July 24, 2019 the fight to save my limb ended with a below the knee amputation. I had no idea how much that July day would ultimately improve my life.
After my injury initial injury in 2016 I needed an outlet/ hobby to relieve stress and build confidence in my physical ability. I found what I was looking for through deer hunting. My first deer was in Southern AZ in 2017. I went out and stalked several coues deer for months before before I could fill my tag. The gratification I had when my hunt was successful and I could say I accomplished this task independently gave me drive to continue pushing through the rollercoaster of surgeries and recoveries that took place in 2017 and 2018.
I hope to share my journey of discovering what adaptations are required when hunting and fishing with a prosthetic leg.

My Wife's first coues hunt
This was my wife's first deer hunt. We had to overcome prosthetic issues, crowds of hunters and freezing cold weather.

2020 Early AZ Mule Deer Archery
มุมมอง 1.2K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is from my Arizona archery hunt. I have new sockets for my prosthetic made just before this hunt. The days were long and hot with temperatures reaching 100 degrees in the mid afternoon. With lots of fires around the south west and no rain...the deer had little water except what they could find on private land. Hunting public land presented a struggle. Nonetheless, I found multiple bu...
2020 Dove Hunting opening day
มุมมอง 1414 ปีที่แล้ว
This is opening day of dove season 2020. My Cousin, JT, took out of party six in the morning and unfortunately a summer monsoon storm days before pushed the majority of birds to the south. After an adjustment late in the morning JT had us on so many birds we couldn't reload fast enough. Huge thanks to JT for taking my friends and I out to his local spot. We would have certainly been skunked wit...
One year as an amputee
มุมมอง 1.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Today is one year since I electively amputated my right leg below the knee. After over three years and half a dozen surgeries trying to create a better, more active life I finally decided to amputate. This is my reflection on my first year as an amputee and why I have no regrets about the decisions I've made.

This was a hasty fishing trip with my son. Sorry for the poor audio and lack of trophy shots of the fish. We didn't intend to film this session originally and in the end I couldn't resist putting it out there.

Amputee life: the struggle of an amputee fly fisherman.

Nine months after my amputation, I was finally able to get out and try fly fishing again. Not only was I rusty at roll casting and mending my line, but I learned real quick what gear is necessary as when wading in a river as an amputee.

My Week of elk hunting in Arizona was interrupted by some major snow and changed the landscape. Five extra pound of mud make walking with a suction style BKA prothetic a little difficult. My Uncle and I called it a little early and I headed south for some quail hunting in 75 degree weather. Let me know what you think. It's been 3 months since I started walking again! My first deer hunt as an amputee Handicap Hunter
He is an alien with 3 legsssss
I noticed that when I got my All Pro, my quads were sore. That is good news because it means I am using more muscles. It is also a lot lighter than my old foot and can tell it when playig
Really uplifting to see someone do this. I just had my 10th surgery on my knee/leg. Been battling infections for years. Surgeon say next one and they’ll have to just take it. I’ve been miserable for years so I’m not upset about it but I have wondered if I’ll be able to do the one thing I truly love. Im 31 so I was hoping with a lot of hard work it would be possible. So it’s awesome to see this.
I am Indian people sir this my number
Please help me this is waterproof and legs
This problem is trying action
Hi sir my name is Ramesh
looking into getting an upgrade to my new leg via a new foot.. What is the difference between the Fillaeur All Pro and All Pro XTS? also would you choose the All pro over the XC Torsion from Ossur? thanks in advance and thanks for the videos and information it is really helpful to a new amputee trying to get back active
Just found this video. I have the exact same two feer and fully agree with your assessment. Thanks!
Can you show links? I have been looking and getting nothing. Ty for your time
I’m not sure what you mean. What links are you looking for? Material?
No rubber foot. I would bond a hiking boot sole to the bottom of the blade. No shoe necessary either.
How much was the all pro
do you know how is this compare to the Ossur Pro-Flex XC Torsion? I'm looking at both feet and so hard to make a decision...
Does the va give you more than one leg ?ohhrah
Tricare does. Since this video I also have a sprinting leg for the CFT, a foot that’s for cowboy boots, and a versa foot for mountain biking. I’m still active duty so I’m pretty spoiled when it comes to getting what I need. Even with all these legs, I still think the AllPro is the one stop shop if you can only get one foot. I used to get sockets for each foot but overtime that became too cumbersome. Now I just have one socket and I screw a different pylon and foot on when I need it. It’s much easier that way. The only consideration is, you have to learn to set your own alignment.
Great information
I had emputed my leg it's been 3 months but the burning sensation n pain still there what is the best time to go for prosthesis. Is there any assistance help for a third world country because it's become very expensive for common people like me. Thank you
Had my amputation 4 months ago and getting ready for my second leg. My prosthetist suggested this foot since she knows I want my hunting, fishing, hiking and kayaking lifestyle back. Was stoked when I found your review. Looks exactly like what I’m looking for and your video shows me I think it’s going to be exactly what I need. Thanks. Anxious to get fitted for this!!
Tks for your reply god bless ,
I have below knee surgery and I lost my leg, I need prosthesis to me.
Thank you
You’re a very big inspiration to me I was in the Marine Corps and suffered for 40 years with a total ankle fusion and total of four surgeries on right foot thinking about amputation thing but I’m scared I won’t be able to hunt and do things I like to do but I’m tired of the pain I use a tree climber do you think I’d be able to use it for the prosthetic leg other than my leg I’m in pretty good shape 185 pounds 6 foot one broke my back too but I can deal with that
Semper Fi! I hope you’re doing well. I moved to Louisiana this year and I’m going to learn to hunt in a tree stand. I really don’t think that would be an issue. I haven’t made a video in several years. I should probably do some updates and document my hunting and fishing out here. I’m on FB @ Thomas Benge if you want more up to date stuff or messaging.
God bless
Ohhraa
You’re an awesome dude I’m 60 years old love to hunt for the disabled vet 40 years dealing with a bad foot total ankle fusion 10 years ago so I’m thinking of amputation due to the pain and going with a prosthetic I have a 55 acre farm scared I won’t be able to do my work what your thoughts thanks
How’s it with keeping your shoe oriented properly. I’ve always had problems with my other foot & shell twisting and also the shell degradation and having the carbon fiber ripping out the toe.
I just had a traumatic above knee amputation a couple of weeks ago and i don't know anything about prosthetics yet. But im an outdoorsman and i hunt and hike and would love to be able to continue that lifestyle. This video was posted 3 years ago.. would you still go with that foot knowing what you know now? And i guess do you need an outdoorsy knee also? Sorry im very uneducated in the subject
This is still the foot I primarily use today. My name is Thomas Benge if you look me up on Facebook.
I need this help me
I am going through the same situation right now. I am in the limb salvage portion right now but i am strongly considering a bk amputation. I would love to speak with you about it if possible?
My name is Thomas Benge if you look me up on Facebook.
My leg is amputated below the knee but I don't have enough money to get a shoe.😢
What type of thread do you use for braiding?
So I am 65 (almost) and healthy with the exception of both ankles. I am told after x-rays and C.T. scans that both ankles are out of alignment, the tallus is tilted outwards in the the socket and the inner point rubs on the middle area of the tibia, no space between on the left ankle and very little on the right ankle. They tell me I am not eligible for replacement ankles and only option is to fuse them. I will not do that yet. I play pickleball, and compete in Senior track and field but it has gotten too painful to do short runs for the javelin and to spin while throwing the discus, not to mention running the 50M. I alos enjoy hiking, biking and other outdoor activities but the ankles are limiting me. Do you recomment amputation and movimg in this direction or should I continue to tough it out? Dave in Nebraska USA.
I doubt you’ll find a doctor willing to even do it. It’s too much of a medical mal practice liability for them. I’m glad to be an amputee and it’s Mitch better than I was for the three years earlier, but I also know that I’m the outlier in most amputation situations.
I always admired the tough breed amputees friends I have. But one friend in particular was very worried about looks that resembles human skin or tone etc. I remember just saying ''if I had to use one, I would just show it off." The designs are awesome and looks like a close future. She decided to try, now wearing the prosthetic with pride and looks awesome.
Very useful demonstration. Hope things are well!
I am an AB the knee amputee and I would love to go fly fishing, but I don’t believe that I can get in the water or walk the riverbanks. I do appreciate what you are doing.
Have you tried a Rush foot or Versa 2 foot?
I have a Versa 2 foot. I use it for mountainbiking. It’s awesome for that. I used the All pro for a long time before I got the Versa. But I only use it for riding, nothing else.
That's pretty much the same way I make mine. Only I extend one leg out and twist it all at once, position my ring then fold it back up. I use a 4oz weight on the end and let her go. We use them mostly for bass, carp, and saltwater. So I'm using 2 and 4lb mono. Tight lines bud, and thanks for your service!
You Sir Are A True Inspiration. You don't let life's Challenges Stop You. I would love to get to go fly fishing with You. GodBless!!!!!
Yellow clear blade lag....please details...how many price...im sri lankan
My brother below knee amputation on 8th March and I want know how much time to take heal the amputed wound he is 20 yrs old please suggest the best prosthetic leg for normal use. I am from India
With positive attitude and good physical therapist they can be walking within months. There’s so many variables that will determine the recovery. Best thing is to stay positive. Ossur is the best for an average person who has limited activity. Otherwise I’d look at something more like the fillauer.
@@thehandicaphunter my brother's amputed leg is bone infected doctor tells us to remove infected bone by surgery it is common to bone infection after amputation first surgery is done 2month ago I afraid to again surgery please tell us average recovery time

That's exactly how I do mine!
I had my amputation done Jan 11th. I was in pain for a long long time before surgery and happy and ready to get fitted for my prosthetic!! Thank you for the informational video! Really helped me
Hope everything goes well! Remember to pace yourself. I went through limb salvage for several years too. I think it gives us a faster recovery after amputation.
@@thehandicaphunter that is also my feeling. They used Pins and screws and plates and fusions and wizards and leeches and you name it. My ankle already didn’t move, and I couldn’t feel half the skin. It was nothing but pain. I feel like that was prosthetics practice! Thanks for the reply! It’s a new community to me and I appreciate all the info I can get
@@The_Mimewar That’s crazy. Sounds similar to mine. Everyone has a different experience. Make sure to document yours!
@@thehandicaphunter thanks again!
I was cracking up when I saw this as my experience is identical! Always end up removing the leg to get the waders off…pain in the butt for sure. When I surf fish, I keep my waders on during the ride home so my wife can help get the damn thing off…lol. Especially difficult when it’s really cold outside. I’m thinking of possibly going a size up when I replace my waders. Also like the suggestion in the comments about putting a slick bag over the foot…might help. I guess I shouldn’t complain, as I can still do most of the things I enjoy! Thanks for posting the video!
I’ve since tried the bag…it works great. I actually use the bag truck for my cowboy boots too. I recorded another video about it last year but never got around to posting it.
Got an accident last year October and after 4 unsuccessful surgery I lost my leg 4 months ago...have not acquired prosthetic leg due to financial constraints..how can one get very very affordable prosthetic..am from Kenya 🇰🇪...pliz advise/ help
I’m in the United States and have insurance that pays for it. I imagine there’s probably so charity organizations that donate but I’m not aware at the moment.
@@thehandicaphunter thanks for your reply..unfortunately in our country we don't have such incentives..we have Ottobock company from Germany 🇩🇪 but their services and products are very expensive for an ordinary guy like me.
@@thehandicaphunter hi Hunter..how can you help me please..got a young family to look after and if I can get a prosthetic I will be able to hustle like before

Thank you sir. I am beginning my Amputation journey

So, the ladder thingy - you see the difference in the kneed. With the ossur you need to hammer it to the grass to make it flat, while with the allpro you seem just kinda bouncy and light. Getting one and I'm so excited!
Let me know what you think about it once you get some time with the foot.
Mechanical broadheads will make a difference. I have been shooting the Wasp Jakhammer for years. It does an excellent job. BTW I am a right leg BTK amputee. Looking to get back into hunting. I am about 1.5 years post surgery and just a few months past a revision surgery.
Thanks for the review. Judging from your comments about how long you'd been an amputee and the age of this post, I'm guessing you lost your leg around the same time I did. March 26th, 2019 due to sepsis for me. I'm getting fitted for my first replacement @ three years into this journey now and my prosthetist had suggested this foot. I'm excited about the possibility of jogging/running again. We'll see...
It’s been my all around go to leg. Hope you enjoy it!
Every time I get confused by life and challenges I watch this "simple" guide to making furled leaders. I have watched this multiple times and have less understanding every time I see the video. Great entertainment. God Bless your efforts and you have given me years of entertainment. I wondered about your injury and have seen you are a Veteran. I was in Vietnam FEB/68-FEB/69. Thank God you are healed and healthy and in pursuit of healthy outdoor activity. Best wishes and great success to you.
I was injured on a motorcycle in 2016. I’m still serving in the military today. Thanks for the comments.
Should try a endolite elite blade
I am also Amputated right foot below the knee, but in Jamaica the foot you get with your prosthetic leg is rigid like a K0, I need to source a K3 and would really appreciate your help
I get my prosthetics through my medical insurance. I’m not sure how you would source them. Maybe I should look into organizations that donate to foreign countries and do an episode on it.
