Mind-metaphors for intuitive and effective use of GenAI in teaching, learning and assessment design
Manish Malik, PhD www.linkedin.com/in/manmalik/
Faculty Director of Learning & Teaching

Playlist of expert talks on GenAI in Education: th-cam.com/play/PLs06T3Iq2hGxx4shnxdihndJP4Fw1QhnZ.html&si=ZGz-yNVvfaZ-bhfx
Abstract:
In this session I will present the results from an evaluation of a unique GenAI literacy session that I have delivered to 170+ academic and university colleagues. Grounded in a framework that views GenAI as a “mind” (albeit without emotions and consciousness) and a tool at the same time, I will identify metaphors such as mind-surfing (like web-surfing), mind-mending (when correcting the GenAI output), mind-bending (linked to the creative process), and mind-stretching (when analysing things) to describe our goals when using the tool in a specific way. These metaphors offer a much-needed vocabulary that makes using GenAI more intuitive and beneficial therefore, whilst keeping the agency in our hands and separating the artificial from the real. Colleagues can now say things like “I am mind-surfing” or “I mind-bended this” when referring to using GenAI tools for specific purposes.
Bio:
Manish is an engineering education researcher working within and outside technology enhanced learning environments. He is one of the founding members of the UK & Ireland Engineering Education Research Network, and worked for it since its inception in 2009. Currently, Manish is a visiting Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, at McGill University Canada in addition to his substantial post of Faculty Director of Teaching and Learning, Faculty of Engineering, Science and Social Sciences at Canterbury Christ Church University. His current research spans self, co, and socially shared regulation of learning, Computer orchestration of learning, threshold concepts, Generative Artificial Intelligence for research and teaching and learning within engineering education. He also trains researchers in systematic reviews, meta-analysis and other research methods and has recently helped supported 170+ colleagues with their GenAI literacy through his signature approach.
Co-hosts:
* Dr. Richa Mishra, Nirma University, India www.linkedin.com/in/dr-richa-mishra-1b19b15/
* Dr. Rea Lavi, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MA, USA www.linkedin.com/in/realavi/
