But please don't rename New Zealand without a referendum to that end first. You may as well start claiming that our Governor General represents some other country's royal family than England. All that can and perhaps should be changed including New Zealand's name, and Aotearoa is a nice name, but until there has been a formal change it isn't the name of New Zealand. And don't imagine that it was 'the original Maori name for this country'. There was no such entity as New Zealand prior to European mapping and naming. There were various islands in this archipelago each with Maori names (that varied over time with changes in tribal conquest). Aotearoa was a name used by only a few iwi only for the North Island and it wasn't used for the entity of New Zealand until late 19th century, quite possibly due to two English gentlemen who were the first to use that name in published writing. Aotearoa was not used for New Zealand in Te Tiriti and as such wasn't mentioned in any documents at all until many decades later.
