This was the first time we achieved 60mph in our 1933 Rolls Royce Phantom II, chassis Number 215AMS following a steering box rebuild, previous to this 40mph was the fastest speed before dangerous front wheel wobble was experienced. I think we could have easily pushed it above 60mph but the sun roof was held on with duct tape and it has a tendency to peel off is we go too fast.

    Suspension could have a few drops of oil and the shock absorbers have seen their best days long ago... ;) My compliments for the quiet gear changes, as there is no synchromesh on 1st and 2nd. Apart from this: smooth ride! Nice memory to my car for 10 years, #158PY, also a Park Ward Saloon in which I traveled plenty of roads on the continent - from Norway to Austria - just as its name suggested. At 75 miles I had the feeling as if the coachwork is blown off the chassis... ;)

    Keith, is 60 mph pushing a PII a bit too high? I always thought the PI was a 45-50mp car and the PII was 50-55? Or does this car have the continental rear end ratio?

    • @tunneltug
      @tunneltug 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi alsancle, well good question, I don't really know only ever having driven one PII. This one doesn't have a Continental diff but it doesn't struggle at 60 or even 65, engine gets up there without effort or noise and it's difficult to stick below 60 on a run smooth quiet and straight (ish). The biggest worry with this car at speed is losing bits of the bodywork as the frame was rotten. As far as I know the PII was advertised to be amply capable of cruising the owner from London to his villa in southern France at a steady 70mph, so I really don't know all I know is I built the engine from a derelict and I would know if it was struggling

    • @tunneltug
      @tunneltug 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think keeping it below 55 is good advice and especially from a safety point of view but I do know owners who have been driving these cars for decades and winning rosettes with them who often drive them on the motorway at 70 (I don’t think I would be happy doing that) I once asked a very well known PII owner how fast he cruised in them and how steady were they at speed and he told me “I have to drive with 2 hands above 70” EEK I thought ;-)
