Ohio City on the South Park Line: Then and Now
For more info: alpinetunnel.blogspot.com/2024/08/a-visit-to-and-video-of-ohio-city.html
Trains that traveled west through the Alpine Tunnel reached Pitkin and then Ohio City. Ohio City, while considered a ghost town by some, still exists today and has a number of residents. In this video I visited the site of the Colorado & Southern's Railway's facilities in Ohio City and also attempted to recreate an early 1900's hilltop photo of the town with an eastbound two-engine train just about to reach the depot.

Gunnison was my stomping grounds for nearly 4 years and in that time, I explored much of the DSP&P right of way, as well as that of the Rio Grande. I have been to Alpine Tunnel on both sides of the divide several times and can only imagine what a passenger on that line would have thought seeing the 'sights'. Once I found half of a discarded "glad hand" air hose connector and of course a few forgotten spikes. Other than that, the books I bought remind me of those excursions, as well as these excellent videos. Thanks again for your work in preserving the history of the South Park. I have mentioned this reference book before but if anyone is seriously interested in eyewitness history of the South Park and the Gunnison railroading, acquire a copy of "Little Engines and Big Men" by Gilbert Lathrop. It is history told as if through the eyes of the author's father who was a railroad man for much of his adult life in the Gunnison country.

The RGW and especially the RGS get so much attention it's nice to see someone providing information on the C&S (DSP&P). Don't get me wrong I love the history of all narrow gauge lines but growing up in southwest Denver, Morrison for 34 years, the C&S felt like my home railroad. Over the years I have driven, hiked, and explored the ROW of this railroad. I now live on the western slope of Colorado and plan to do the same on this side. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I completely agree! I enjoy the D&RGW and RGS too, but my heart is with the C&S. I'm glad the others get a lot of attention, but I always enjoy it when the C&S gets some recognition too. On forums like the Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum (which is great!) it's hard to get much interest in C&S-related posts, with the exception of stuff related to the Alpine Tunnel.

They've removed a few of the stone walls as well. There's a few spots where sections of tracks are still in the creek. Might still be a section over by Beaver Brook. The same thing was basically done at Golden Gate City at the G.G. canyon entrance. Hurried up and built over the historic ghost town before anyone could stop it. I grew up. Close to Clear Creek Canyon, I spent a lifetime in that canyon. There isn't a whole lot of people that know it better than I do, if you ever need any help Just holler. Great page, subbed!

Unfortunately, we arrived and everything was just sitting there with not a soul in sight. I found out years later that the line went bankrupt somewhere between '89 and '90.

I agree. It always amazes me when something so old survives especially through a mixture of chance and effort. I really enjoy finding out the stories of how C&S equipment avoided ending up in the scrap heap.

This brings back some memories… Many years ago my first wife and I decided we should hike in to clear creek, around where inspiration point was. We came in from the I-70 side as I remember. This was April and neither of us had any knowledge of tick season. Needless to say the ticks descended upon us in droves and we wound up standing in the bushes half naked removing ticks from one another… Think I’ve a postcard postmarked at Forks.

@@searchingforthecsnarrowgau8853 Probably one of the cards I’d purchased in Denver during the years that I lived there. I’d had a routine of visiting the antique shops on South Broadway, walking distance from my residence at the time. Back then you could get postcards for 10¢, 25¢ may have been as much as a dollar, nowadays there much more expensive… I just searched eBay and didn’t see a Forks Creek postmark, but there are several cards depicting Forks Creek station. Keep an eye out and you’ll find one.

Well the YT police deleted my first response so I’ll try again. Think I’d purchased that card in Denver many years ago. It was a “Mother Grundy” card that I’d found for $1.

I really enjoy you postings. When I lived in Colorado I walked or drove many of the places you have chronicled. I have seen this most recent site several times when I would be going or from Denver for my job. As this was in the early 90's when I did this, I can't vouch for how much of the old roadbed is still there. There was much left, along with abandoned bridge abutments then.

@@jgrahamiii7749 A lot of the roadbed in Clear Creek is still there. They have been building this whole network of walking/biking trails in the canyon and, while it sometimes is on the grade and sometimes not, it at least makes the grade somewhat more accessible. There are still abutments too. A little west of Forks Creek, we came upon a set of abutments that were for Bridge No. 5. I'm pretty sure the Elk Creek bridge abutment is still there too. Lots of rock cribbing is very visible too.

I agree-it is such a great drive. It's one of the best routes (along with the Pitkin to Alpine Tunnel road) to drive the old South Park Line without huge road-reconfiguration of the old RR grade.

With today's modern technology I feel as if 3 ft gauge railroads could manage. I constantly fantasize about trains in the Rockies being revived to haul goods from the big cities to smaller towns up in the mountains, an ideal route to start would be Denver-Idaho Springs. Instead of ore, the train could carry produce, mail, and building supplies to stores in the area, taking the job from trucks and sparing the narrow mountain roads tons of wear. Possibly with the use of EMUs, a tourist or even commuter train would also work. Obviously, the sad truth is that rebuilding the line would cost a ton with today's regulations, narrow gauge trains are way slower than driving, and trucking is much cheaper and more accessible. One can only imagine, though.

It's easy to get to the site of Hancock. From there it's a 3-mile hike to the east portal. One the western approach, it's a lot bumpier, but you can get to Sherrop Loop and then you have to part and walk about the same distance (3 miles) to the station complex and the west portal. They are working to reopen it for auto traffic, but it looks like that might happen next year.

Thanks for asking. Glad you like the effect. Here's how I do it: 1. Search something like "Steam green screen" and find one you like. 2. Download that video. I purchased a program called Wondershare Uniconverter. It's been worth it because of the download option. 3. In your editing program (I use Final Cut Pro) put the downloaded green screen smoke video on top (above) of your image in a video project timeline. 4. Find an effect in your video editing program called something like "Green Screen Keyer." 5. Drag (apply) that onto (as in 'into') the green screen smoke video clip. That will remove the green and leave just the smoke. 6. After that I play around with shrinking or stretching the smoke to fit how I want. Sometimes I even layer it with the same clip to make the steam bigger and so forth. Lastly, add some audio from a steam engine and voila! I hope that makes sense.
