Key Takeaway: try playing in softcore mode, the normal way to play terraria. It seems you are playing completely blind, so I'll try no to spoil too much. Terraria is not like minecraft. It is MUCH more focused on the combat aspect. The main (but not the only) goal of a given stage in the game is to gear up and defeat the next boss. New players are expected to die often, and learn from it. That's why the usual way to play the game is in "softcore" instead of your "mediumcore". In softcore you don't lose your items when you die, you only lose a portion of the money you're currently carrying. Mediumcore for a new player can be very frustrating indeed, I would go as far as saying the game is NOT designed to be played like that. Dying in terraria should be very, very little punishing. The guide NPC will give you hints about where you can explore in order to progress. Currently your goal should be to explore under your house in order to find a way to improve your max life, that will drastically enhance your survivability and will let you explore the world much more comfortably. It is a common game loop to go and explore, return with a full inventory (or after dying) and talking to the guide to see what you can do with the new materials you collected. Anything that says "material" can be used to craft something else, and the guide will tell you what (and where to craft it). For me it's exciting to find new materials and discover with the guide what I'll be able to make with them in the future. The game has lots of NPCs, that over the course of game progression will move to your house IF you build valid houses (or rooms) for them. The house button on the right lets you see if a room is valid. I recommend always having an empty valid house or room. Spoiler about how not to get frustrated with the first boss: if the boss comes on its own and annoys you, I think you can spend the time of its arrival underground and it won't appear. You also have plenty of time to save your money, set your respawnpoint where you are (using a bed inside a valid house), and give it a try without losing anything if dying. In the normal difficulty most players can easily defeat this first boss with a full armor of the shiniest metal you can get at this stage and some ranged weapon (shiny metal bow, throwable knifes/shurikens, etc). There are lots of different useful weapons. It is also common to prepare a floating platform, an arena, in order to fight bosses with ease. With glass bottles near water you can begin the crafting process of potions that will help you too.

At Terraria?! Vanilla...? QoL mods can make the game way more fun and some aspects trivial. Terraria is my favorite game. I have played since launch... Oh also pick up the habit of toggling "Smart Cursor" on and off...
