Crows are always doing interesting things but they are so disliked here… Kingfishers are the favorite targets of many photographers / cameramen and it’s not easy to have them for yourself. @@johnluk Thank you very very much John for your kind words! You must have a large garden if you can have more than 1 maple tree. In good soil they get quite tall (but there are several species of them). Well now most leaves are on the ground and winter birds are still far from here. Baikal teals like yours are here and there alone or with another. This one has been in this pond for a month now. I saw another individual in a river. They normally head for the large reedbeds in the East on the other side of Tokyo. I hope your gales will calm down. Ours don’t. Birding means leaving in the dark and coming back before 11:00 or it’s too windy. The daurian redstart is seen briefly but not a lot of individuals have arrived yet. This year is very unusual. Hello and thank you very much. Indeed there are sometimes things that take you by surprise in birds(and even plants or trees)‘behaviour. It’s always inspiring to observe even the commonest of birds. But sometimes one is just stumped 🤔. The kingfisher perched a meter from where I was. He realized it unfortunately and departed. So are many people. But Japan has a problem with too many cats that kill birds. Otherwise we are awaiting winter birds. For the moment only the cold weather has arrived. @@wildhomevideos Hello 👋 ! Thank you for your kind message : absolutely true in all words! I’m going to check on your magpies. Ours also like a bit of crunchy insect but they also devour fruit 🍈 ! They are quite special though: générations help each other raising chicks and it can make quite a big familial group. As for pussy, he sure looks like he wants some bird meat to vary his menu. @@bunkowmoviebirds476 Thank you very much for your kind words. The azure winged magpies are lovely birds, but the cats aren’t cute little things here. There are thousands and thousands in the wild and they regularly kill birds. The jungle crows and the carrion crows are always harassing birds of prey here to get their catch. Their don’t attack them, they stay closer and closer and the bird of prey (kites, osprey, kestrel or buzzard) is obliged to leave them what it caught(fish or insect,lizard or even snake). Their tree sparrows are very numerous in Japan and we notice them in the autumn mainly. In summer they are difficult to observe. We don’t have other kinds of sparrows here. Thank you so much for watching this video. I have studied that jungle crow with growing interest. And from your answer I can see that crows have a lot in common . Intelligence, knowing how to exploit the skills of others, mating for life and spending lots of time teaching chicks.. The feedback from the Japanese birders wasn’t positive at all: they honestly hate crows. The only member of the crow family they accept is the azure winged magpie (it’s vegetarian and not black !). @@johnluk Hello John, thank you very much for your kind comment. The white cheeked starlings are mostly in Japan and South Korea. North East Asia get some in the summer but here it’s permanent. Still in summer they are very discreetly hidden as we see them arriving in mass in the end of autumn. Tree sparrows are the only ones we get here. But our sparrows in Europe I feel are becoming fewer. I guess it depends on the areas but I was surprised by their very reduced numbers when I went home. There were not a lot of starlings either. There is something wrong with what’s happening to what’s left of the environment at least in France. I remember those starlings murmurs you filmed. I saw a few in Spain and in the UK but never elsewhere. I only hope birds populations aren’t going to collapse at least here because of the weird climate extremes we get. Birds have been my friends for long and the more one observes their behaviour the more it becomes interesting. I can’t go long distances and Japan has this incomprehensible policy of cutting all the trees along all the major rivers of the country so beautiful old trees are disappearing fast. They do it in case of flooding. But Europe has flooding as well and trees stay where they are. It can’t bel helped anyway so birds lovers have to be resourceful ( and walk a lot!). From December it gets cold and in Tokyo very dry. In your case I know you have snow : this means you have to walk very hard and cover up a lot. @@johnluk Thank you as always for writing. It’s very kind. France was so muddy going you had to wait for the shoes to dry and clean before going again. There was good birdwatching but no filming of any kind of waders as lakes of river shores were flooded. You are right about green green Wales. When I lived in the UK I indeed found it so. I really like your observations on cows and magpie : in fact in my part of France there are no cows, just enormous wheat fields. Obviously plenty of varieties are missing. @@johnluk Thank you so much John! Snow ! Let’s hope it’s just a freak of the weather. You can’t stay long in a hide if it’s that cold. Here it’s unusually rainy too. And cold. That little river plump in the city is a few minutes train ride and unless they go on covering the whole of the river with concrete (they do everywhere, like canals) it’s still a good place for kingfishers. But of course they are disturbed and one day won’t be able to dig burrows and that will be the end. There is no environmental protection here except where they can’t build(high up in the mountains). Anyway I am going to inspect the various spots I know and see how things stand. It’s always a great pleasure to write to you. Hoping your spell of cold weather is just that!
