I remember this day. I was five years old and a few weeks away from starting school. He was supposed to be in our area for a concert the following week and my parents had tickets to the show. Proceeds from ticket sales were donated to the local hospital in his memory. I grew up as a big Elvis fan!

How wonderful to have this radio compilation. Just like being in that moment. The radio announcers are professional while being so moved by Elvis' passing. Angie Marchese, of Graceland's Elvis archives, for sure must have copies from all stations. Again, how fortunate that these tapes exist. A five hour tribute, people standing in the rain waiting for record stores to restock Elvis' records... ❤❤ ❤❤ Imagine that these expressions of love played out all around the world. Only Elvis.

Heard the news that night 16th August 1977, I was 12, my dad came to my room and I sat up in bed. Everybody was talking about it and all the news papers covered it. My mum bought 3 different papers, next day, just to read about it. It was a shock. What made it more so was a photo taken '77. I now know it was doctored. People still talk about it and then there were films and records played non-stop. Elvis sure gave a lot of love and certainly recieved it. The king lives forever in our hearts.

Love the phone calls. I was 8 in New York and our whole family mourned like all these people. I remember that day very well. My mother almost drove off the road when with her six kids (coming back for shopping with us for new school clothes) the news came over the radio that afternoon. She pulled over to collect herself. She too was 42 and a fan since the 1950s. It was a season ofMourning through October (when they broadcast his final TV special and really for the next year or two there was so much attention to elvis in the media… only in the 80s was a bit of a backlash. But you hear the sincerity and genuineness inn these reactions. It would have been nice to hear some of the records played here because they mentioned that the records are worn out and scratched.. it would’ve been fun to have heard that !

@@woodside93 Some of the biggest tv networks didn`t even have Elvis`s death as their top story when it happened. But they learned pretty quickly that this was the biggest death in the world since JFK was killed. Tv networks and radio stations where shocked by the reactions from millions of Elvis`s fans who were openly crying and mourning all over the world after Elvis had died. My mother who lived in Europe at the time told me that her neighbour came running over screaming "Elvis is dead, Elvis is dead" after it was announced on the news. It was the top story all over the world with the exception of the U.S. news media who treated it as if just another "entertainer" had died. Elvis was NOT just an entertainer. He was the King all over the world. America lost it`s biggest star that day, and the media didn`t know it. John Lennon died three years later, and when Lennon was assassinated in New York the news media had learned from their mistake on Elvis`s death and ran with it as their top story. Lennon`s death was almost as big as Elvis`s was, since he was a member of the Beatles. A friend of mine told me that there were no school the day John Lennon`s death was announced because of grief. My grandmother always remembered where she was when they announced Elvis`s death. She compared the shock to the assassination of JFK. Elvis was a young man when he died. Only 42 years old. Nobody expected him to die like that. He was about to go on tour the day after he died.. This was the day music died.

@@yellyman5483NBC Nightly News led with Elvis’ death, CBS Evening News (with Roger Mudd subbing for Walter Cronkite) didn’t (dunno about ABC). People Magazine, meanwhile, had Marty Feldman and Ann-Margret on the cover instead of Elvis; they too learned from their mistake with John Lennon.

@@johnnyballenatl The American news media was shocked when they saw the reactions of Elvis`s death. People were openly crying in the streets, and thousands of thousands stood outside of Graceland in mourning. Elvis sold 20 million records in the months after his death. They didn`t realize how big Elvis was, and how big this news story was, both in the U.S. and worldwide. Elvis was the biggest star in the world next to the Beatles when he passed away. He had sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide. My mother told me that they were hysterical in Norway when they heard about Elvis`s death. She used to live there at the time Elvis died, and one of her friends came running over in tears screaming "Elvis is dead, Elvis is dead"

Elvis died ten days before my eight birthday. Two months before he passed my dad took me to the airport in Kansas City to see his jet. I became a mega fan that day. Love hearing this recording. I remember seeing all the news when he passed away but never heard anything on the radio. Somehow I thought radio in 1977 was poor quality, with static like AM or something. This sounds so good. Almost like it could have been recorded yesterday. Thanks for sharing.

I was 20 when Elvis died. I didn't believe my brother when he first told me. I told him not to make up stuff. Unfortunately, I learned soon after that he wasn't making it up. I was stunned. It just didn't seem possible that Elvis could be dead. I just saw the Elvis movie and would like to say that Austin Butler did the King proud.

Hello from England ELVIS died 2 days before my 12th birthday. It was a SHOCK. I remember watching the announcement on TV. Just think back in 1977 we only had 2 TV channels which were the BBC and ITV. On the day of the funeral of ELVIS i was helping my mother in the kitchen make my cake. and we watched it but what sticks out in my memory was seeing all those White Cadillac's behind the hearse and there must have been 16 of them at least. I have been a FAN for 44 years and will go on being one till i leave this earth. He WAS and STILL IS my HERO. Its a strong word to use BUT ITS TRUE

I've heard for a long time that they didn't want to talk about it afterwards or they had been told/warned off not to discuss it with anyone. Is there any truth to this story?

They never mention Elvis. Ulysses Jones stated, when he testified back in 1980, that the call said, "party passed out, or party having difficulty breathing", They had no idea who it was, it could even have been a fan at the gate.
