Older OS uses less resources. A better comparison might be have the M2 use a fresh copy of El Capitan. I don't believe the M2 cores are use until after the OS loads. Plus if the M2 is the 256GB version, isn't that a reduce speed of the 512GB and other faster SSD?

The MacBook Air 2015 is capable of running maximum up to macOS Monterey, you should update it, to it, more security and features when you use it! But you have indeed upgraded to an M2 MacBook Air though! :P Edit: but that’ll probably reduce the boot up speed for your 2015 MacBook Air.
