Summer fun... flying with nine hang glider pilots - all launching from Mt. Bakewell, in some pretty rowdy air.

A 312 km flight from Mt Bakewell in Western Australia in my amazing Gecko!!! The forecast was for 9kt SSE winds after 1pm (before that it would be unflyable with NE winds). Gav, Guise, and I headed out to make the most of what looked like very promising weather. The forecast was suggesting lift to 12,500 feet and wind at the top of climb to be around 17kts... The full tracklog for Guise and I c...

Hang gliding in Western Australia. Leighton Beach/Cottesloe is a low coastal site that takes a westerly breeze. Ideally, the wind should be between 15 and 20kts for easy flying. Today the wind was lighter, so we scratched around a fair bit.

A group of us headed out for some autumn flying. Thermals were predicted to reach 5500'-6500'. We were lucky to get the higher range after a slow start and a very low inversion. All 10 pilots had good height gains and 4 flew around the 76.4km triangle we set at the start of the day.

We decided to head out for a fly during the Easter break and see if we could get any lift under some very heavy cloud cover. While we were there, we helped adjust the pitch of the prop on the Dragonfly, to see if it helped with the climb rate.

Hang gliding in Western Australia, from Carter's Farm to Beverley Gliding Club and back again (around 90kms). Nice height gains and long glides.
Flying 262kms on Jan 1 2021 in my Gecko #FlyMoyes #HangGliding #MoyesGecko

My previous best flight in my Gecko was 230kms. A group of us thought we might do better, especially on January 1, 2021. What a way to start the year. We all had great flights and couldn't have started the year on a better note. How lucky are we to be in a place that is COVID free and life is virtually back to normal.

Hang gliding in Western Australia in my Moyes Gecko 170 with Technora sail. This glider is seriously impressive in climb and glide, as well as being very easy to land in all wind conditions. Aerotowing is easy at 1/3 VG setting.

Great footage! Do you think the wing loading is much higher on your Malibu or is it just that Rob is such a master of slow flight?
Hey Rolf! Rob is very good pilot, and I slowed the Malibu as much as possible. He was in a 190, and I was is the 188. I hook in at around 20kgs more…
damn when you state WA i thought washington state not west australia, a bit far for me
Excellent! I'm partial to king post designed gliders as that is what I flew for years here in the states. Thanks for the great video!
Nice place , have you landed at home yet ?
Great day ! your carabiner looked sus ?
Yes I know…
Nice Climb out , looked like a hard day
Cowboy with a death wish
That carabiner gate tho'
(I'm pretty sure your 'biner is rotated and you are hanging off the gate...some bungee/rubber will fix that for you)
The student TACAN!
Great flight! Looked like outstanding conditions during the day and running into that convergence in the evening was a nice bonus. Hope you get many more nice flights on your Gecko!
Si Interesting to watch these flights and your responses to different conditions. So much to learn just by watching these flights that are so professionally edited. A great help to my experience. Cheers.
Nice video. Thanks for the narration. Best bedtime story for a hang glider pilot.
Sorry you did not make it over to Corryong, it would have been good to catch up. I'm trying to find someone to bring you the little glider. I have so many happy memories hang gliding at Bakewell and now here I am a bloody Victorian paraglider pilot! Fly Safe and Happy New Year.
Maybe you’ll pop over for a catch up and get a few wheatbelt kms under your belt again Rolf!
the thing I didn't like about hang gliding was that I needed a second person just to drive my truck
Well done!
Congrats
Thx!
Good flight ,try from Hobbs or Roswell NM AND FLY UP TO KANSAS
I'm about to learn hang gliding. So..can I hang glide along here then along the beach? What about Scarborough?
Thats a trek and a half home 🤣🤣
Very nice experience, any one knows his contact please? Im looking for learn hang glider.
リスクあります、カラビナ位置注意 😓
Great to see you posting again Dave.
how do you do this without trespassing?
Bro how you go again up hill after landing, I mean how you transport wing up again
Surely there’s such thing as a microphone designed to be used in high wind? Or a software filter that can remove “windy microphone” sound? I refuse to believe there’s no such thing, and that not a singer hang-glider-owner knows about them.
👋👋👋
Can infrared scope 'see' thermals ? If not, why not ?
As an ex WA HG pilot these days, I also really enjoyed this video.
That looks great but there's no clouds? And don't tell me you fly to in front of the pub? haha... (really?). And very happy that a malibu 188 can be flown on hardly any lift? wow.
Fantastic !! i flew that same coastal section in the 70,s great memories. Wish we had todays technology back then.
Do you love the Gecko 170, I,m about to purchase one?
The Gecko is without doubt the best glider I have ever owned…. Very high performance and amazingly easy to land and take off. I’ve never nosed in… not once! You’ll love your new glider!
So who found the thermal first :) ? Nice flying. Bad luck about the closed pub.
Vic found that one first and was at least 500 above by the time I got there. Yep, the Greenhills waypoint is now deleted! :)
That is awesome!
Amazing days
That looks like light wind / precise flying! Lovely song too.
What was your total take off weight?
I weigh around 95kgs, harness, parachute and helmet 11kgs, vario, radio, phone, Spot tracker and cameras 2kgs… glider 33kgs… 33+2+11+95=141kgs
looks like a perfect learner place? cool
Wow, I get it, that's serious scratching at negligible lift!
I wonder what your project is? towing?
Maybe aero towing… after we build a nice weekender!
@@drabsinwa180 Ripper idea, hey, I've seen a "glider on rolling trolley" version and electric winch in back of car or trailer (presume you want to go higher though?) Oops, sorry, can't switch off an engineers brain? haha
Great finding you here Dave. Stunning..... can't wait to catch up with you guys.... tomorrow actually.
That takeoff must have been jarring.....going diagonally across crop rows!!!!
Not as bad as it looks… the glider is flying very quickly…
Brilliant, Thanks for posting.
What a great video, looked like an excellent day. I used to fly a Moyes Mission 170 and i did my training with Andrew Humphries back in the early 1990's. Only completed my B1, B2 , T1, T2 and did a bit of dune gooning. But boy did i love it.
Thanks for sharing. Very inspiring for those of us who are looking to get started in the sport.
Awesome location!
Nice flight, you had to work hard at the start, it makes the flight very rewarding
Excellent Video Drabs. Thanks for posting.
wow verry nice
Fantastic effort, well done! I pick up my Gecko tomorrow, at this stage with 72 hours on a Fun-190 I can’t imagine ever doing that distance on knowledge and skills... I would be happy with one third what you have done... Inspiring! Thanks for sharing, Blue
Enjoy your new glider. You are about to have so much fun….
